Just another reason to hate Toys R us
I hate TRU & BRU. I avoid shopping at both as much as possible. This just makes me despise them even more.
What a way to promote family - open at 5 pm on a day when you are suppose to be thankful for what you have and the loved ones in your life. Instead they are encouraging people to come shop
I don't care so much that they are actaully OPEN on Thanksgiving (so many other stores are opened that night) as much as they are opeing AT 5:00pm - usually when families sit down to have dinner.

i don't blame the business as much as the people who shop these events. They turned thanksgiving holiday into chaos.

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
there are a lot of stores opening early from what i am hearing... not sure of exact times, but kmart, walmart, sears, macys, jcpenny...
stores should be closed so people can be with family - its terrible. i am sure most of the employees wont have a choice...if they want to keep their job they will have to work the holiday. it stinks! i hope shoppers dont shop so that next year this wont happen. but its all about money and this year the retail forecast is terrible so stores are looking to do anything possible to promote sales.

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
i can tell you after many years of working and managing retail there were many people who WANTED to work the holidays because it means overtime pay and other perks. I know my BIL who works for apple on black friday they are feeding the employees, having an ipad raffle for people who work, overtime pay etc. He wanted to be there.

this is what bothers me. Employees should have a choice on whatever they want to work a holiday!!

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
yeah, I used to ask around first. if i didn't have enough people who were willing to work it then I would see if I could borrow willing employees from another location who wanted the overtime. However, if nobody wanted to work I can assure you the D.M's would say "well they signed up to work retail...holidays is a requirement" but as store managers we often tried to work with our staff and work the schedules to be as fair to everyone as possible. It sucks more for the managers who have to work it EVERY year and often have to work 13 hour days.

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
Disgusting.
But I'm going to sum up what what some people might say/have said previous years:
Some people want/need to work (would YOU want to? Would your spouse want to? We aren't talking jobs that contribute to our safety, we're talking about RETAIL)
The economy is so bad (I was unaware that opening a store on Thanksgiving night would make or break an entire fiscal year!)
People are lucky to have jobs (I didn't realize that being lucky to be employed means it's okay for working conditions to continually deteriorate)
This is what you should expect working in retail (Don't even. People expect to work longer hours during the holiday season. No one goes into retail expecting to work ON Thanksgiving and we all know this is a relatively new practice)
It doesn't affect me, so I don't care (that's nice)

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
I used to work in retail when I was younger and I hated working black friday. You had no choice. Every employee had to work and had to work a full eight hour shift. They did feed us but only because we were not allowed to leave the store at all b/c they thought we would return late. I can only imagine what it feels like to work on Thanksgiving. Trust me even though I got paid double time it was so not worth it as retail pay in general sucks so doubling it still puts it low.

Me too. It sucked. Good point about the money.
I will never shop on Thanksgiving. It would be an insult to my family. I also won't support those stores who ruin their workers' holiday. There are so few days in a year that are just for families where most people have time off. There's just no need to shop on Thanksgiving.
I hate my local TRU anyway because the employees are duds and the store isn't well run- but they should still let their workers have off.

Grocery stores, gas stations, movie theaters, bakeries, 7-11, etc. etc. are all open on Thanksgiving Day. So I hope all the naysayers remember that when they are getting gas, or picking up last minute supplies for their dinner. These companies hire seasonal employees to work these holidays. I rarely hear people complain about having to work and getting double time. That is what you sign up for in retail unfortunately.

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
It really bothers me because it's the only holiday at this time of the year that encompasses everyone. There isn't anything about religion...it's just a true American holiday and every family celebrates it.
You won't catch me in a store that day. No way. I feel terribly for those that have to work in retail on that day. I know people do have their reasons for wanting to work on that day (extra money/holiday rate, just generally don't like the holidays, etc.) but my guess is that those people are in the miniority. I'm sure most people in retail would prefer to have a day off to relax with the family before the craziness of Black Friday begins.
Maybe it's because I love Thanksgiving so much...DH and I are of different faiths, so it's one holiday that we really love...but I just can't imagine going shopping on Thanksgiving. For what? To save a little cash? I'd rather watch my beloved parade, cook up a few sides, pick up my pies from the bakery down the block and start house-hopping to see friends and fam.

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
I still don't get it. I mean to go shopping on Thanksgiving is crazy but I don't even get Black Friday. There is no sale in the world that would lure me into going near any store that day!! Nothing, not a free tv or iPad. NOTHING! I'm always amazed at the people who go

I know people who have worked in Tanger and it is crazy on Thanksgiving and black Friday. They basically had to leave HOURS before their shift even started because the traffic is insane and there is hardly anywhere to park!

I have worked in retail and in restaurants and I don't know what all this overtime people are talking about is. I have NEVER gotten overtime at a retail or service industry job on a holiday.

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
I guess I'm in the minority but Thanksgiving isn't really a big deal to me. Being open is a business decision and they must feel the demand is there

Just another reason to hate Toys R us
I worked for many years in a business that was open 365 days/year. Working holidays was not an option. Before that I worked in supermarkets and retail. In both places, the employees who worked Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Years were well compensated for the time they worked. I often volunteered to work those days, as I was young and single. The extra money was great and I was not giving up any time with anyone. I was usually home in time to eat with my mom and brother.
But it is the shoppers who want the stores to be open. There are plenty of people who will and do shop no matter what time or what holiday. There are always going to be people who need to work certain holidays.
Last year I had to go to BRU on black friday, unrelated to sales. I needed something for my son. At 4pm, the place was a ghost town and I got some great unexpected deals on X-mas gifts.

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
I understand Black Friday. I get it. But WHY does the toy store have to open on Thanksgiving? WHY does ANYONE have to go shopping on Thanksgiving? This, to me is obnoxious and ridiculous PARTICULARLY now, in an age where you can shop any time, any place from anywhere - it's called the internet. Hello? WHY would anyone set foot into the craziness that's a toy store?

Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us
This same thread comes up EVERY year.
I'll say what I always say............who cares. They wouldn't open if there wasn't a demand for it. For many, Thanksgiving is not a big deal anyway so there are plenty of people willing to shop that day AND also those who don't mind working as well. Nobody has a gun to your head saying you have to shop on Thanksgiving. I personally would rather be home with family relaxing and eating like a pig all day but I am not bothered that the retail world is up and running while I'm enjoying my holiday.
I don't get why people get so up in arms about it.

.
This is what it comes down to. I personally couldn't go shopping on Black Friday because I can't deal with the crowds but clearly many people don't mind and that is why the stores open and keep opening earlier and earlier . If people wouldn't go, they wouldn't open. I personally plan to be stuffing my face around 5 pm on Thanksgiving and then comfortably lounging around until dessert time
