Re: Just another reason to hate Toys R us

I equally blame the stores and the shoppers. If no one would shop at the stores during those hours, they wouldn't open. By the same token, if they weren't open, no one could shop. It's a sad reflection on our society.

It doesn't matter what the bargain is..I'm not leaving my family on Thanksgiving to wait in a line in hopes of getting something on sale. There's nothing we need that badly that we can't afford. Even if we could afford very little for Chanukah, we'd deal. I don't do Black Friday either, but I don't begrudge the stores or the shoppers that day. I just hate crowds.

I dont mind them opening at 9 like they did last year, but 5? That is when people sit to eat! Thats dinnertime!

EXACTLY!!

I agree with that...5 is too early. I would be ok with 9

DH's second job is stock at a store that opens at 5pm Thanksgiving day. He's required to be there. Last year we didn't even bother "celebrating" Thanksgiving because of him needing to sleep for his overnight shift that started at 5. I'm sure the same will go for this year.

We never celebrate thanksgiving either because of dh's job. I'm very thankful that he has a job however, I would love it if we could spend one thanksgiving together as a family instead of him either working on the day (with no overtime btw) or having to go to bed around dinner time because he has to be at work at 3am the following day and leave an hour early just to find a place to park. It's not fair to our family just because your family wants a better deal on sporting equipment thanksgiving night. And no, it doesn't make it okay because he "knew what he was signing up for" how dare you all say that. This is the only job he can get right now. He works his ass off and has for years. His work ethic is better than anyone I know. Did he want to go down this career path? No. But you know what, he does what he has to to feed his family and doesn't complain. But I am right now because it sucks that he doesn't get to spend this day with us. Especially because he does work a retail job we don't have a lot of money and sometimes it's so easy to get sucked into the whole materialistic aspect of the holidays, of life and we can't have most of that and normally, I'm okay with that. I'm very grateful for what we do have and God ALWAYS pulls through for us and provides for us even when things seem bleak, at the last moment He provides and we get one day out of the calendar to do nothing....no work, no school, no shopping, etc to sit back, enjoy our family and be THANKFUL for our family and all our blessings, that we have a warm home, and food, and clothes, and we are healthy, and have our boys and each other...all we need, BUT NO...I can't even have ONE DAY. And don't even bother saying, well be thankful he even has a job, because I am. It still sucks.

I'm sure many people that are Nurses, Doctor's, Police Officers, hospital attendants, etc. feel the same way. The reality is, there will never be a day where NO ONE in this world has to work.

I look at it as I don't need a dedicated named Holiday to spend time with my family and sit down for a nice meal.

Police, fire, EMS, Drs and Nurses are ESSENTIAL services though. Essential- as in LIFE or DEATH. Buying an Xbox for cheap is not life or death.
Although some a-holes seem to think it is.

I realize that, but my point was she is not the only person with a family member not at the dinner table. I digress.

Good god people just agree to disagree and move along. It sucks, plain and simple. And I'm sure if people were more affected by the stupidity of shopping on Thanksgiving they'd be singing a different tune. And using the tactic that T-day shopping might mean the difference between kids having Christmas at all, BS. There's incredible sales every day during the holidays to get what you need. The biggest gift you can give your kids is to teach them the value of family, not the quantity of presents.

Nurses, doctors, police officers, mta workers, etc at least make a decent salary, have good benefits, and a retirement package to justify them leaving their families on holidays and they actually do great things that we need as a society on those days. Please tell me the benefit of my DH, who makes crap money despite working his ass off, working soooo many hours around the holiday season and on holidays, missing holiday time with his family? We NEED nurses, etc on holidays, as a society we can't shut down certain jobs and they in turn are paid overtime for their much needed work. That is honorable. There is no NEED for retail work on holidays. NONE. I could see a pharmacy being open on Thanksgiving because that is a need but a pp said that her CVS pharmacy part is friggen closed and only the retail section open. That's sick. I hope think about the these points you are making right now to me to justify retail workers working on thanksgiving while you are having a nice meal with your family and then gear up to go save some money while I'm sitting alone with my two young boys on Thanksgiving, putting them to bed alone because my DH just returned from work and has to go to sleep because he has to be up in 3 hours to go back to work so people can continue shopping and while you are out getting your deals for your family with the money you earned getting paid for a holiday you didn't work and your bonus, and etc...I will be doing my holiday shopping on Craig'slist and the buy/swap boards because we don't get any of that money.

I'm sorry that you are in this situation, but don't blame me for the occupation your husband has chosen.

You make an awful lot of ridiculous assumptions about me in your post, so I'm just going to refrain from commenting any further.

It's NOT the occupation he has chosen. It's the job he has to have to support us while he is looking and waiting for something else. What do you expect him to do, sit around and collect unemployment and government benefits instead of taking a retail job? Thanks, thanks a lot for that.

I agree 100%.

The stores open earlier and earlier to compete with other stores that are opening earlier and earlier. The shoppers shop so they can get the "better" deals so if the stores are opening earlier, they have to go earlier. It's not really one or the other, it's both! But the only ones who have the power to stop it are the stores and they won't.

i don't blame the business as much as the people who shop these events. They turned thanksgiving holiday into chaos.

EXACTLY!! if there wasnt a demand for it, they wouldnt do it, and they wouldnt push it more and more every year.

Its a double edged sword and I find both retailers and consumers are to blame. our society and the need for the best deals for more stuff and instant gratification; and the stores are giving into it.

Pretty much agree with this, and frankly I think it's a sweeping generalization that EVERYBODY wants to be with family ALL DAY on thanksgiving. Many people don't care for their family, don't care either way, or are just looking for something to do. I can see a lot of teenagers shopping on Thanksgiving evening, and also a lot of teenagers working on Thanksgiving just as an excuse to not have to deal with family.

There is demand for shopping.

My two cents is tradition is kept alive by parents and family. My kids and I will never shop on Thanksgiving, they will always know what it is all about. I get the working factor but as others pointed out people request those days for overtime so there are ways to avoid it in non essential jobs.

i can tell you after many years of working and managing retail there were many people who WANTED to work the holidays because it means overtime pay and other perks. I know my BIL who works for apple on black friday they are feeding the employees, having an ipad raffle for people who work, overtime pay etc. He wanted to be there.

Exactly. For some people, that money will make or break them. As long as they aren't forcing people to work, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Honestly, some of you need to get over yourselves.

yeah, it sucks that the stores are open, but to start calling people who shop @ssholes, or throwing around that presents on christmas shouldnt be tied to a childs happiness or other things of the sort that have been said......also not in the Holiday spirit.

I worked retail for a very long time. The worst I had was having to wake up at 3am to go from ny to BJ to work on thanksgiving morning. I got to spend the day with my family, then work my butt off.

It sucked but I did it. I had no choice.

So it's interesting that the above poster says "as long as your not forced".

You are. You are ABSOLUTLY forced to work.

1. You wNt a job? You will work when you are told to.
2. Don't like the hours? Quit.
3. Working on these days is, a lot of time seniority. So if you have no seniority you HAVE to take the crappy hours.

I thinks it reprehensible that the stores open on thanksgiving. I would never ever shop on Thanksgiving. I feel bad for the poor retail people are forced to work to work on that day.

I always used to joke that I had T least 3 days off a year. Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Now? Not so much.

It won't happen, but I promise you the day the as swipes who are in charge of all these companies have to work to prep the store days in advance, and would have to work on thanksgiving would change their tune if they had to work. But it won't happen.

The people at the top of the food chain in retail only have to answer to the stockholders. Make money by any means. The people at the top actually don't really care Bout the person in the store who workrs on thanksgiving. They care that the company is making money by any means.

Make sure to shop in family owned businesses in the town you live you live in. THOSE companies respect their workers.

Retail management does not give a shit about the workers. They only care about hitting their numbers.

I mean...as a manager...during the hiring process we do discuss the schedule and how you may be required to work holidays. I always tried my best to be flexible and thank god my workers often had no issues working it otherwise yeah, I'd definitely have to remind them that they did in fact sign up to work holidays. Anyone who works in retail knows this, so it's not a surprise or secret. That's why I won't work for a place like wal-mart, toys r us etc. I made it fun and often times we were allowed to petty cash food and snacks to make the work environment happier when we had to work for holidays. They do contests and other things to try and keep morale up.

do I think opening at 5 is too early? yes...but if the workers are aware of it and take the job...well then you can't accept the job and then complain later when expected to fulfill the job requirement.

I quit my job as a manager because I wanted to be a SAHM and didn't want to miss out on holiday family time etc. It's a personal choice.

ETA: many of the larger chains that do open on a holiday or very early after it specifically hire extra staff who are well aware of the schedule requirements in advance. seasonal staffing is a regular practice and does help relieve some of the workers who would rather be with their families. I've had employees specifically ASK to work the holiday because not only do they want the money but they either didn't have family or didn't have plans and would rather be working / making money.

Knowing you will be required to work holidays, I get. But it was always holidays like Labor Day, Memorial Day, or even 4th of July when retail stores were typically always open. It never included Thanksgiving until a couple of years ago. Thanksgiving was typically a store closed type of holiday.

These days more people buy online and if I am not mistaken, stores have same offers online as they do in stores. So I don't understand why stores need to be open earlier.
