this stupid ice water challenge....
is getting soooo annoying! stop 'nominating' me. i made a donation to another charity that i am connected to. i do not want to dump cold water over my head, nor do i have the time to go outside and film myself doing it.
and by the way, you are still supposed to donate even if you do it.

I have politly declined.
Plus..most people who are doing the challenge don't donate. Stupid.
ETA: I didn't mean "stupid" in the WHOLE thing is. Obviously its brining awareness and raising money.
But Im not a fan. Its "trendy" now. And its stupid that people dump water over their heads to AVOID giving. Give, don't give, give to your cause, don't.

It started as a choice donate to ANY charity or dump the water. but then it took off on social media and people were dumping water. some will still donate but I would guess most do not.
I told everyone do not nominate me cause i'm not going to keep it going.

I read that ALS's donations have gone up 1000% since this began. It's bringing awareness to a terrible disease. Not so stupid, IMO.

It's nice that it boosted so much money for the ALS cause, however, I too have begun getting annoyed seeing all of these videos on my FB newsfeed.

I don't think it's stupid but I dont think 1 - you should dictate what charity I donate to and 2 - how much I should donate. I got nominated and I'm not doing it. I give regularly to charities that I am involved with so I don't feel bad not participating.

This is exactly how I feel. I'd be far more inclined to do it if I could choose a charity of my choice. And just think about how awesome it would be to hear about all the different charities that people support. I know the ALS cause is a great one, and I'm glad it seems to be helping them. But I do very careful research before donating to charities, and there are many that could use a boost like this challenge is giving.

When it started you could choose the charity and then over time it has changed into ALS. This has been around for much longer than people think.

this stupid ice water challenge....
My 7 year old nephew nominated me but by the time I get out of work and get home, it's not very warm out anymore, this week specifically. Plus we had that day that it rained. I have no problems doing it but my SIL is now harassing me that it's been over 24 hours. I'm about to just say eff this and just ignore it. I donate to charity often enough.

Re: this stupid ice water challenge....
I'm glad it's raised money & awareness for ALS.
I think it's stupid to nominate someone to donate to a charity. I also think that most people are doing the challenge & not donating which isn't the point of the whole thing. I don't want any public accolades for supporting charity or doing good deeds. I like to keep that stuff to myself so posting a video of me would never happen.
I get that it's all in good fun but I'd rather see a video of someone writing a check & mailing it to a charity.

It's not even about raising awareness anymore. It's about who can out do who? Who is more over the top? People spend more time on who they will nominate, than the actual cause. Great that the donations have increased 100%, but it's silly. It's a "trendy Facebook thing to do". No thanks.

Re: this stupid ice water challenge....
Just so you know, the "stupid" ice water challenge has been HUGE for the ALS association. According to their website :
"Between July 29 and today, August 12, The ALS Association and its 38 chapters have received an astonishing $4 million in donations compared to $1.12 million during the same time period last year. The ALS Association is incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from those people who have been doused, made a donation, or both. Contributions further The Association’s mission to find a cure for ALS while funding the highest quality of care for people living with the disease."
Even for the people who do not donate, just their video being posted on FB promotes awareness and awareness alone is a huge thing for such relatively unknown, horrifying diseases.

Re: this stupid ice water challenge....
It has raised 2.3 MILLION dollars for ALS compared to 25,000 this same time last year. Do you know what kind of different 2.3 million can make towards research?!?!?! I dont see how that is stupid at all.
You dont have to do it, I probably wouldnt, but seeing how much good it has done, Id definitely donate now.
People really need to get over being "annoyed at a video" on your feed. No one is forcing you to watch it. Also, it seems silly to get bent out of shape bc someone is telling you how you should spend and or donate you money.
Take it for what it is. It has done a TON of good and I dont see how anyone can take issue with that. Just keep scrolling then.

I just saw that, which is even MORE awesome that it has gone up since I last saw the figures!!! That amount of money can make a HUGE HUGE HUGE difference in research! I just dont see how anyone can say its not making a difference and is "stupid".

So what about other charities. Why is it only for ALS? Why not cancer, heart disease, AIDS, etc etc. Donate money. Don't pour a bucket of water over your head. I think that is why people are calling it stupid. Because it doesn't make sense.

My friend did that & explained her in video why she was doing it & why she was choosing not nominate anyone but asking that people donate what they can.
I wouldn't even do that, because how & when donate is none of anyone's business. I wouldn't post a video of myself, but I might post information about ALS if I was nominated. That to me is promoting awareness.
I do wonder though, if this is actually going to backfire--& make people LESS inclined to donate to ALS right now because of this campaign.

I think because this is one of the charities that gets less attention.

Those charities are well known - but by all means, if it comes to you, instead of saying ALS, donate to the charity you pick and recommend that people chose their own charities. I will say that I have been amazed by how many people I know have been personally affected by ALS, it's not a disease that I know much about (and I work for a Neurologist).
DH and I regularly donate to the charities that are important to us (Lustgarten & Susan G. Komen). This was, for us, a good way to raise OUR awareness of a disease we didn't know much about.
