this stupid ice water challenge....
So at my nieces party this week, this was the whole topic of discussion with my family and I voiced how STUPID I thought it was and how they should donate something. Well guess what my family members who decided to do it, did donate after we had this discussion. So I guess my self-important pathetic @ss, helped the cause. Trust me,I was never angry or irate or losing sleep as some of you want to say and dramatize our opinion, I thought and still think it's a dumb concept.
I was challenged by my little niece and I will donate to AIDs foundation. Because I know some people think it's a "livable" disease (as posted very early on this thread), but tell that to my aunt and uncle who are 6 feet under and my younger cousin who is living with it the disease. I won't be pouring water over my head but it's just to show my niece we should all help when we can.
I don't think any disease or charity is more worthy than others, some just need more awareness and sometimes it's what's closest to someone heart. I don't and will never believe in people doing it because it's the trendy topic of the month.

How can something be a dumb concept when the outcome has been nothing but positive! Awareness has been raised and donations have been made.

I already stated why I thought it was dumb over and over again. People were or are doing it cause it's cool. I did not say it didn't help and raise a lot of awareness which I also stated was good and I didn't know that before this thread becuase what I was watching on my feed.
No one knew that it was for ALS except one person at the party.

I just don't get how people can get so bothered by this whole concept or think it is dumb. Who really cares if people are doing it to be "cool". It is working!

I didn't think anyone is bothered about it and going out there protesting against it. I'm not irate or losing sleep over it. Just stated our opinion as per the original post. I'm not going crazy over it and I'm just voicing my opinion. The people who sound angry are the ones who are name calling in my opinion. So I wanted to come on here and share what happened over the weekend and that there are people who don't realize what's it's for.

One of my friends did this. She thanked on the person who nominated her in her FB status, said should would make a small contribution to ALSA, but also donate to anther cause & then posted a link to that instead of showing herself getting doused in ice water.

the ironic thing is, no matter how you feel about it, just by debating this back and forth -- it brings even MORE attention to the cause in a way.
and that goes for here, as well as all the articles/news pieces/blogs that were done asking "is the ice bucket challenge just a trend or is it REALLY making a difference?" (some were cited here)
so that's kind of cool.
hey, whatever works. sometimes the journey is more important than the destination... and sometimes the destination (in this case, raising money and awareness) is more important than how we got there (posts all over facebook, videos, etc)

The Southampton Press staff just did it after being challenged by another newspaper, but just before the payloader dumped all the ice and water on them they called out a challenge to the town boards and the police. We shall see if that challenge is taken up.
This may be silly 2014 summer thing, but it's entertaining and it's raising a lot of money for a good cause.

At best, it is something that many people will likely remember for a long time, perhaps inspiring them to donate again at a later point in their lives or to consider the impact that donations truly have for charities.
At worst, it is a trend raising millions of dollars for ALS.

Re: this stupid ice water challenge....
I love the ice bucket challenge. I was one of the very early participants before it went crazy viral and the day i was challenged was the first day I had heard about it. The only other person that I knew that did it was the person that nominated me.
You know what? It was funny and light hearted but at the same time it got me to look up exactly what ALS is, and to donate money. Clearly no one can argue that this has created so much awareness for ALS and has raised so much money for them! Even if some people are doing it and nominating others without knowing or understanding why, you'd clearly have to be living under a rock at this point to not know the cause.
As someone that has done a fair amount of charity work I can tell you that for one group I work with we spend a LOT of time and energy and we raise about $50k a year. For something that was just an idea and took very little time or effort to pull off to raise over $30 MILLION already is incredible.
