So what about other charities. Why is it only for ALS? Why not cancer, heart disease, AIDS, etc etc. Donate money. Don't pour a bucket of water over your head. I think that is why people are calling it stupid. Because it doesn't make sense.
Exactly this, and I am noticing a lot that people are not donating anything, they are just posting videos of themselves dumping cold water over their head, no donation. They are not even doing it right. The point is to donate! So, YES, annoying. It's like a lot of people are doing it for fun but are not donating to any charity at all.

Personally, DH did not mention that he donated, but we did. I think it can get awkward with friends when you mention $$ so we didnt post that we did. From the people I've talked to, this has been the prevalent theme, no one wants to mention that they donated so they don't have to say how much.

Honestly, who cares? Why NOT ALS? Its the ice bucket part that made it go viral. It has raised FOUR MILLION DOLLARS!
I cannot wrap my head around why people have an issue with this.
I agree the point is it has raised awarenss and had raised a nice amount of money! What is wrong with that?

The videos are dumb, not the awareness. It's almost like a viral video contest.
For once, I'd like to see someone put a big fat Benjamin in an envelope and then dump real ice water on their heads.

Only on LIF would people find a way to be negative about a "viral movement" that has done ZERO harm and 100% good to the tune of 4 million dollars.

Seriously, I'm astounded by some of the responses on here.
I'm myself. It's bringing awareness and donations all for a good cause! If you don't want to donate to ALS, donate to YOUR cause. It's still all good and all positive. Other than the people who think it is "OR donate" not "AND donate", there is nothing wrong that can come out of this.
And quite frankly, I'm enjoying the reactions of people having ice water dumped over their heads. Especially the men who yelp like little girls.

Just so Im clear, people are upset/annoyed that 4 people on their personal small newsfeed didnt "seem" to donate bc they didnt say so and bc of that it makes this whole thing, "stupid" despite the thousands of people who HAVE donated and raised 4 million dollars?

I think it's stupid because no one on my FB feed is donating, their cheap @sses are just pouring water over their heads for attention.
Raising awareness alone isn't going to help any charity. Congrats to the ones who donated and actually raised money.
Yes, raising awareness DOES help charities - IT'S SHOWN TO DO SO BY THE INCREASE IN THE AMOUNT RAISED SO FAR!!!! ALMOST A FULL $3MILLION INCREASE OVER THE SAME TIME LAST YEAR!!!!
Also, just because people aren't telling you how much they are donating, doesn't mean they aren't donating. Maybe all they could donate was $10 and don't want to be made to feel bad, or maybe they were able to donate $500 and don't want to make it seem like they are braggarts.
Trust me I know these people, my FB friend are comprised of family and close friends. I can assure you they are doing it for attention. My SS did this yesterday and it was purely for attention and he didn't even know it was for a cause.
Like I said congrats to those who donated and raised money.

Yes I think it's stupid for those people who are just pouring water over their head, more than half didn't even mention ALS on my feed.
Like I mentioned in my previous post my SS said it's just a game going around on Instagram. I tried to explain to him and tell him he should donate something in addition to the challenge and spread the word. He did none of it, just called out four people and put water of his head. It was really stupid.

Re: this stupid ice water challenge....
my response to it on FB (we did both..)
In regards to the ice bucket challenge, say what you will, but I think it has certainly put ALS into peoples' minds who otherwise would have never heard of it. I'm sure many people will be donating to a cause because of this and that is the main goal. But here's my thought/question. Wouldn't it be great if all of our donations could go to families affected by the disease we choose to donate to? Research is funded, but the people affected (and their families) have hospital bills, at home care, days off from work, medication expenses, etc. Is there a place/organization for donations for them?

Check out your charity of choice, most if not all do have funds that go directly to patients and families. They are in the form of paying for housing during hospital stays if necessary, donated medications, and a whole host of other services for patients and families directly - including organized support groups. If you want a charity that handles that sort of stuff solely, the only one I can think of is Ronald McDonald house which provides housing for families dealing with extended hospital stays not in their home town. But most, if not all, other charities do provide assistance to patients.

I agree with this and 4 people on my news-feed.....try there are 50+ (and I'm not a friends whore that needs to be friends with everyone and their brother) videos a day on my news-feed and I would say one or two probably actually donate. I have no issue with the reason it was started but it has grown to just a stupid video contest.

Carnival Cruise Lines takes the ?#?IceBucketChallenge?, on all 24 ships! The company has also made a $100,000 donation to the ALS Association.
Now that's awesome!

I agree. I ASKED the people who posted videos (or others did and they were pretty clear that they fulfilled the challenge with the water and made no donation.
That's what rubs me the wrong way. It seemed like it was for the "look at me factor" and not hey - ALS awareness.

The awareness for ALS is awesome, so I don't think the videos/challenge are stupid, but if you nominate someone and they make the choice NOT to participate (for whatever reason it is) they shouldn't be harassed about it. That is the only "stupid" thing.

SERIOUSLY!
And how do people know the people pouring water over their heads aren't donating? My husband did it and we still donated, we didn't post or announce our donation as I am sure most don't.

Welcome!!! Oh, and there's also "go fund me" - it's been getting really popular as a way to raise money for individuals directly. I'm sure there are tax issues that you would need to figure out, but that's a good place as well!

Absolutely!!!
You can search it and find people you associate with - you can also find people looking for $$ for cars, but there are a lot of families raising money for medical care.
