Ebola and the news
I'm finding it harder and harder to read and watch the news each day. It seems like everyone has something different to say. You want to believe the CDC and doctors but now everyone seems to be criticizing them saying no one is in charge and they can't protect us.....what are you supposed to do? What if this starts to get bad fast? I can't imagine what if a few people in NYC get this and take a subway or something...ughhhh...I travel for work by plan and am scared now, do I wear mask, will it protect me. have a young child and just don't really understand now how to "stay safe" Anyone else feel like this? What can you do? It seems like no one can provide concrete answers and that to me is scariest of all.....

I think the key for the public is to not panic. Ebola is not airborne so you need contact with bodily secretions of those with Ebola. Which is why it's spreading in countries with limited isolation resources and with health care workers. I have not heard about any spread from just standing next to someone on a train, etc. Since it's not spread airborne like the flu, or SARS, or MERS a mask will not help unless you are knee deep in patient care with bodily fluids coming at you.

I am scared too. And I do not believe what they're telling us. By looking at facts I can come up with my own opinions. I believe it IS airborne to some degree. If an infected person sneezes I believe you can catch it in the air. This is my opinion. How in the hell did that Texas nurse catch it while wearing proper protection? I think this is more contagious than the flu and HIV. Otherwise how are these health care workers contracting it? They're not all breaching security precautions.
If this spreads we are in big trouble. It upsets me they haven't even made an attempt to restrict air travel. It also upsets me when they make stupid statements like it won't come to the USA. It's ridiculous that they'd even be so stupid.

I still can't get on board with the whole hysterics of this yet. Maybe it hasn't hit close enough to home for me. But I feel like I cant worry or drive myself crazy about something I cant control!
Maybe take a break from the news for a bit.. I for one can't watch the news everyday.

Still not concerned here in San Antonio with lots of folks who travel through DFW to get here etc. I went to a huge fair with lots of dallas and houston folks. Unless you are handling the bodily fluids of a person showing signs of Ebola, there's no need to panic. I'm thinking this woman slipped up, shame. She will get the right med, she'll be fine. This needs to end already.

I understand the fear, but this is the truth. The HC worker DEF had a breach of protocol... It happens so often and it's typically because the HC worker is thinking of the patient first and themselves second. Is greater education and standardization required for hospitals? Yes. But it will happen fast at this point. I'm not worried.
As an aside, I am of the what will happen will happen mentality, worry only robs you of today's joys.
Ps I work in healthcare and am 8 months pregnant with my first. I am more worried about the enterovirus which has killed and affected many many many more children in the us than you would imagine based on how much news it's gotten, especially on here. There was the child in jersey who died just last week from it.

That enterovirus has me worried too. Another toddler just died in (I think) Michigan. So scary! We have colds right now and I'm on my DD like a hawk making sure she doesn't have a fever, isn't wheezing, etc. I'm very scared of enterovirus. Not overly concerned about Ebola, but I'm paying attention to it.

Yes, enterovirus is freaking me out as well! I think I need to go on a news blackout for a few days. Ughh, too much these days and now I just read that nurse in TX boyfriend appears to have been admitted with symptoms, not good! Hope it's not true.

I agree 100%. I also feel that the news job is to promote fear.
Onto the next big story too.....we should place bets on what it will be...

Still not worried here. Just watch with mild interest every now and than as i am a news junkie.....lol. Right now I would be more worried about ISIS than Ebola.

I just can't live my life in fear. Unless I am touching someone who is severely I won't worry.
I take the subway and train everyday to work and will continue just as I do everyday.
IMO the fear is irrational and news driven.

If it's not this, it's ISIS, if it's not ISIS, it's the enterovirus.
Or cancer. We can all get cancer. Cancer rates are on the rise.
Or a car accident. Drunk drivers are rampant.
There are a million things in any given day that can kill you.
A brain aneurysm.
A heart attack with no history of heart problems.
A blood clot.
IMO if you live like that you will have to live in a bubble and never leave the house. Or be on some very heavy anti anxiety meds.
I just carry on.

I'm spooked by it being that my DH travels internationally frequently. My DH isn't spooked. His rationale is "look at the numbers in Africa", a place where they are populated, uneducated and have little to no healthcare/protection.

What do you mean look at the numbers in Africa? Are you saying it's low numbers or high numbers?
With the long incubation period I think the numbers are alarming. Over 4k have died and that's just what's been reported. It's steadily rising with estimates to be in the millions in the next few months.
I think the numbers are horrifying and showing no signs stopping.

Ebola is a virus with a, optimistically speaking, 50% mortality rate. The wold health organization is now warning there is potential for 10,000 new diagnoses weekly. While I'm not running out and buying a HAZMAT suit, I think the suggestion that people worrying about it need to speak to a therapist to be ridiculous.

I agree and as to the therapist comment - If something is worrying you that much that you can't read the paper or watch the news and its inhibiting your life it would be beneficial to talk to someone. And it was just a suggestion.

I have a very good friend who is a virologist, who definitely has his concerns based on the lack of research invested in the virus. Truthfully, what is worrying is how little we know about it. Sanjay Gupta did a piece for cnn back in April speaking to the ease of getting Ebola from microscopic breaks in your skin. There have been animal studies with Ebola showing the potential for mutations that would allow for it to be airborne. Until now there has been very little money invested in researching it (as someone stated above, it wasn't here and people didn't care)
There isn't an accurate understanding of the mortality rate IF it spreads to the US because those rates are based on history. However, there is an estimated rate of 30-50% based on the the supportive care in developed nations.
Again, I work in healthcare settings and I'm not overly concerned BUT I don't think that it's my place to suggest therapy to someone who might be worried, that's just my opinion.
