Ebola and the news
When the CDC brought the Drs. back I had limited faith in them. Because they have never had to deal with it here, everything is new ground for them. They are proving my worries right and now I have zero faith in them. Duncan should have been picked up by the same team of the CDC that treated the doctors. How were the medical personnel who have no idea how to deal with this not given hazmat suits. This and the reports that the nurses are speaking of ( which I read about elsewhere , too) show that the CDC is not taking this this seriously enough. Maybe they are too confident in the medical care we have in the US versus Africa . There was so much room for error by that Dallas hospital and ALL ERRORS were made. This isn't the swine flu, which is bad enough. It's a horrible , contagious, incurable, deadly disease which is proving deadlier with each report. After reading that report that was posted regarding nurse testimony, the fact that anyone who works in that hospital ( direct contact or not) isn't being put in some kind of quarantine is crazy to me. Plus ,these people boarding planes and getting on cruise ships are selfish and stupid, and so is the CDC for telling that nurse she was ok. The cdc and these healthcare workers should be thinking outside of the box and going on the side of caution!! I tell people when my kid has a common cold and opt out of play dates and activities with other kids for just a cold. And flame away but I totally think that we should be closing doors to people traveling to and from these countries. It's pathetic to me that Belize is handling this more cautiously than we are!! And let us not forget that the EPA ,another government agency ,told people it was ok to breathe the air at ground zero. The government makes mistakes, and what we have seem so far is proving it!!

I have a very good friend who is a virologist, who definitely has his concerns based on the lack of research invested in the virus. Truthfully, what is worrying is how little we know about it. Sanjay Gupta did a piece for cnn back in April speaking to the ease of getting Ebola from microscopic breaks in your skin. There have been animal studies with Ebola showing the potential for mutations that would allow for it to be airborne. Until now there has been very little money invested in researching it (as someone stated above, it wasn't here and people didn't care)
There isn't an accurate understanding of the mortality rate IF it spreads to the US because those rates are based on history. However, there is an estimated rate of 30-50% based on the the supportive care in developed nations.
Again, I work in healthcare settings and I'm not overly concerned BUT I don't think that it's my place to suggest therapy to someone who might be worried, that's just my opinion.
This is what troubles me. The lack of research, knowledge, and not knowing how the virus might mutate.

Next year they will come out with a shot for both of these. We will all be told by doctors to get flu, ebola, & enterovirus so drug companies can make more money ;)
Yeah. Because they don't give a crap about saving lives. The free vaccines we get at cvs or the measley copay surely is the money maker here. I'm pretty sure getting the disease itself wouldn't cost tax payers one dime between hospitalization and treatment. It's those five dollar vaccines that is the big money win.

I don't really understand how people are NOT concerned about this. Do you trust this ass-clown of a president to protect us from this? I think you'll be changing your tune in a few weeks...
It took a few pages before Obama was blamed

So I work with a woman who is a bit of a germophobe. Actually, she's a HUGE germophobe to the point it's crazy. She orders MONSTER sized bottles of hand sanitizer for the office, she carries a paper towel everywhere to open doors, she brings her own silverware for lunch rather than using the plastic disposable forks and knifes in the kitchen- and her reason is that she doesn't know who reached in the drawer and touched that plastic stuff before her. Really over the top,
Well yesterday she was in the office of a salesrep she supports and he sneezed. She went nuts on him saying he could have Ebola.
Then, the day before some poor soul must have been sick at work and didn't make it to the bathrooms we share with other companies in the building. So there was throw up in the hall near the men's room. Gross, and I don't want a stomach virus any more than the next person, trust me, but she went insane and said that it's not fair to the cleaning crew to have to be 'exposed" like that to possible Ebola. She called building management asking if they could get a hazmat crew in.
I predict her in a hazmat suit by Thanksgiving...
Now, I will say, without a second's apologize that THIS woman needs to speak to a therapist. Stat.
Wow. This is beyond obnoxious; it is disruptive and harassing. I ahope HR talked to her/she was disciplined. Could you imgine if everyone acted like this? Intolerable.

Our government CREATED this virus. There's a patent on it for fu*k's sake! And they created the vaccine years ago. Here's a good article with sources:

Oh yeah. This article isn't slanted one bit. Lol. Notice not one research based scientific article ever uses the word "conspiracy" or shows a photoshopped picture of anyone with a maniacal grin and a syringe!

Re: Ebola and the news
My reading has informed me of the fact that the US got a patent in 2010 on ebola, but it is a different strand than the one currently going around. Ebola has been around since the 70s

Uh, what?
This can't be serious. The common sense show for a source? First off, the picture, as someone said, is shown in a way to make people afraid. Second, the usage of "quotes" is unnecessary. Third, his bulletpoints show no sources, and they look cherry-picked, if they are even real sources. Fourth, too many questions-- I don't need someone to be asking me "do you realise the government is lying to you?" questions. Fifth, take a look at the ads.
I can't. I really can't believe this is quoted as a source.
ETA: After some quick reading, the Government didn't create the virus. The patent is there to protect you. The CDC has the patent after discovering the virus, not creating it. This way further research can be done without paying some other company to do the research.

Nell, the hypochondriac you work with reminded me of something my sister told me today. She supervises reps for a medical/dental supply company. All week, there have been requests from clients (Dr. offices) for hazmat suits... Sorry, we don't carry those

Ebola and the news
As someone who works in a hospital I'm "concerned" about Ebola but not panicked in fear. Working in NY I feel that there's a real chance someone with Ebola could walk in the door. I feel that the hospital I work for has a has a plan and is working to implement it.
My thoughts on the recent events: 1. We in the US are just not prepared for these types of viruses (which is not surprising since they are not that common). I think what happened in Dallas could have happened in other hospitals.
2. I think the CDC's treatment of the 2 doctors who got Ebola from working in Sierra Leone (bringing them back , etc, etc was the right thing to do). I think the CDC didn't do a good job of jumping in to help in Dallas. Also I think the whole comment by Friedman about how the nurses, "must have broken protocol" is irresponsible. A nurse caring for an Ebola patient is going to be extra careful and not carelessly throwing gowns around. While again we're not prepared for this type of virus nurses and doctors work with other communicable disease that require gowning and gloving and have experience with this process.
3. I wish the CDC would reveal WHAT EXACTLY they think happened to cause the 2 nurses to get Ebola (i.e. gowns that didn't adquately cover the neck, etc, etc) so the rest of us can learn from this.
4. The whole thing with the government creating the virus is tinfoil hat nonsense.
5. Travel bans will not work. Here's a good explaination: http://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/why-an-ebola-flight-ban-wouldnt-work/
6. I think it's clear that its difficult to get by casual contact (i.e. subway, out in public) as only nurses who took care of Duncan when he was dying got it. In Africa the folks MOST likely to get it are those who bury the dead since those secretions are most infective.

I belong to a lot of scientific pages on FB and they say this all the time!!!
You would not believe the conspiracy theories out there!!! It's frightening. More frightening than Ebola IMO.
