Re: Ebola and the news

Just a reminder.. there are 1.2M in Dallas Texas (not including its surrounding cities like Grapevine, Richardson, Plano, etc. Nearly another 1M in Fort Worth (which isn't as close as it sounds).

I know NYC seems like the center of the world but I would think that Dallas is a large enough city (one of the 10 largest in our country) that its a great example of how WELL they are doing. This isn't spreading like wildfire. Its not quarantine time.

It is still a large city in the US. Yes it is technically smaller than San Antonio but its still a large 'enough' city that its worth noting this isn't so scary.

Ebola as a whole is scary
So is life.

Not belittling its deadly prognosis but reality is we can't hide from it forever because we are in a 'civilized' country. I said it when those doctors got that miracle drug all those months ago "Great now its going to be "First case in the US" and so forth" My husband asked why and I said "If you could come to America and get free healthcare for your children would you ship them on a train overflowing for the chance? Yes. What do you think they'll do to get a free pass from death?"

Our State has 94,000 displaced children in our schools for the tune of 3M in costs. The state is also picking up the tab on this Ebola case.

Is it lucky NYC hasn't seen a case yet? Not really. Just chance. It could have been any of the big cities. I think Texas is handling it as well as they can. I am NOT saying the nurse who sent him home was smart, nor that this nurse followed all protocols. Just saying human nature and force of nature, this could have been SOOO much worse.

Even for a 'small town' like Dallas Chat Icon

ETA: and the number of flights from DFW to NYC area? ha! Going to ban our flights too?

And has been for a day or two.

This is the govt being extremely cautious ( for all of those that think they are doing nothing).

interesting

Saw this article, thought jt was interesting. I am nervous though. Especially since this is the first time it has ever been contracted on US soil. It's a scary thing, that we don't, as civilians, know much about.

Ebola and the news

Next year they will come out with a shot for both of these. We will all be told by doctors to get flu, ebola, & enterovirus so drug companies can make more money ;)

Now a second health care workers has tested positive. Someone who also took care of Duncan. I find it interesting that they say nina Pham did not breach protocol but this health care worker may have not taken the gown off correctly. Also they're saying the hospital failed in many ways not doing what they needed to properly contain the virus.

Unless you are a Heathcare worker that is treating these people there shouldn't be fear. And yes they said Nina broke protocol.

And because they are treating these people very early on their survival rate is much higher and they are getting blood from the first Dr that was cured and his blood has antibodies to fight it.

Honestly the media is creating an unneeded panic.

Ebola and the news

I think this is getting to the point of hysteria. That hospital had numerous mistakes.
1. They first turned away Thomas Duncan when he had a 103 fever
2. The staff treating him were not given the proper protection. They had exposed wrists, necks, etc. They were even told face shields weren't necessary
3. Thomas Duncan wasn't immediately quarantined when he was admitted and could have potentially infected 7 other patients
4. The staff treated Thomas Duncan were also treating other patients at the same time
5. The staff was not properly trained on how to care for an Ebola patient, take off protective gear, etc.

I understand the concern, I feel it too. Unless this mutates and becomes airborne them I'm not letting it affect my every day life.

What about the healthcare workers that go home to their families? To their non-healthcare worker loved ones?

I read Nina's boyfriend went to the hospital for a fever yesterday. They say each person infects 2-5 people. Duncan has definitely infected 2, so far.

2 healthcare workers that were with him til the end.

His family have not tested positive and they were with him in the beginning.

IMO this is hysteria. I get that I can;'t convince you that here is no need to panic but you also can't convince me this is as big an issue as you seem to think it is.

If it was that easy to catch every single person that came in contact with Duncan would have it and all the people that cam in contact with the nurses would have t and it would already be a massive outbreak....ITS NOT!!!!!

And we need to stop with the conspiracy theories on drug companies and that the govt wants the virus here.

It's not a conspiracy theory that this is a horrible disease that is extremely infectious and doesn't know borders. There are 17k open visas from west Africa that will travel here in the next month. We have 19 available Ebola beds in our country and 3 hospitals prepared. Hospitals don't even have hazmat suits AND even if they did they don't have wash off areas.

I am not saying tomorrow we will all have Ebola, but I wonder what out country will look like in 6mos, in a year?

I think a lot of people don't want it to happen and refuse to believe the possibility is there. In addition they have such blind confidence in our government and our healthcare system.

I really think we need to set up certain 'centers' in every state that are 100% ready to deal with this and the infected people can go there for treatment. There is just no way I can fathom every single hospital being ready for this.

Re: Ebola and the news

As I've said about 1000 times now, why are the US healthcare workers being told it's just droplet precautions and that all they need is a gown, gloves, and mask with face shield? Anyone else you see caring for patients or even cleaning their cars/apartments long after they've left is in full hazmat gear! Why is that "not necessary" for the people providing DIRECT care to the patient??? Now they're "breaking protocol" Chat Icon and catching Ebola!

I don't buy that. I'm sure these people are following what they're instructed to do meticulously. They are well aware that their life is on the line if they have one little slip up. I don't believe they're being adequately protected. It shouldn't be that easy to "break protocol" that now two professionals here are already infected after just one case.

eta- Has either of these workers came out and said they broke protocol? I have only ready that the CDC "believes there was a breech in protocol". I think they're saying this to cover their ass and blame the victim, who either wasn't properly protected or properly trained in the first place.

even if its easier to spread your not contagious until you are sick. so I hope ebola scare or not any healthcare who is sick is not treating any patients!

if it is that easy to spread why hasn't the guy who had it families gotten it if they were in close quarters with him.

Nina Pham had said she cannot pinpoint anything that broke protocol. The nurse in Spain did however say she touched the patients face.

There are several stages of Ebola before you either turn the corner and get better or die. As you become more sick you become more contagious. Especially because you start secreting more body fluids and bleeding. In the early stages it's mostly sweat.

Also like any virus some people are either immune or have a stronger immune system.

Personally I've never had strep before in my life and been exposed many times. Am I immune? Who knows, maybe my body can fight it off better than others. There are a lot of people in Africa who are exposed and don't contract the virus.

And for everyone who is mentioning the media I don't think they're causing mass hysteria. I think they're doing the opposite by reporting stupid statements like "Ebola will never come here".

And that woman nina has stated she did NOT breach protocol. I doubt the nurses and doctors are risking their lives and be sloppy. Would you?

Ebola and the news

Not that Im saying this is truth or not but..

Our radio stations are obviously all about this. And the one I listen to is out of Dallas. A woman called in to answer the question - How is this Ebola scare changing your routine - but instead she said she is a nurse. She is much more careful now that before but said as nurses they take the patients well being as a priority to their own so much that it is easy to forget things. She clearly said she knew Nina and I quote "She absolutely broke protocol" but that it didn't surprise her. She also mentioned that those who worked on Duncan STILL worked with other patients.

Our other news stations are reporting Nina did indeed break protocol in robing and disrobing.

Call me foolish but I still think both will be ok.

This!! There needs to be places set up ready for Ebola patients that actually know what they're doing and how to stop it from spreading. It should not be left to individual hospitals to deal with.

I'm not so worried about a national outbreak/zombie apocalypse...but let's say that hospital in Dallas gets a few more cases...and then someone in Chicago or NY pops up with Ebola and infects some people...etc...it will scare people...it's bad for the economy...it's bad for travel, it's going to tap out the government's resources to deal with things like this pretty quickly...and since they aren't banning travel from West Africa, there is nothing that will stop pockets from popping up randomly all over the world.

Also, I'm a little curious about why we haven't heard anything about Duncan's family. Is their incubation period over? If they are all healthy, then it's a good sign that it's not very easy to catch early on, only after the person gets very sick.

Re: Ebola and the news

These workers were NOT protected. The hospital failed them and they had no choice.. It's their job.
The nurses complained that their necks were not covered and they were told to cover their necks with medical tape. So when they got fluids on their neck and they had to take off TAPE there had to be cuts. From the tape that could have had fluid on it.

Give me a break. How stupid and incompetent is that hospital. The nurses wanted the patient quarantined. The hospital refused and let him sit open in the ER for hours. How is this happening? I am furious for the nurses that were put in danger by gross negligence. So while there may have been breaches it's because the nurses were not trained properly and not provided the proper gear. My aunt works in a lab and she said the gowns they were using were not proper. She said the ones they use in the TB lab were better than the ones that they used. Unreal. If that woman dies.. it's on the head of the hospital.

Yes it will impact travel. I am traveling to Tx for a wedding in three weeks. I am due to fly into dallas and stay over night and then drive to the wedding location. I am pretty sure that I am driving right through and not staying in Dallas anymore. Logically, I know I am not catching it. Of course. But, it is giving me anxiety and I REFUSE to be anxiety ridden or even slightly worried at my brother's wedding. So we are driving to the wedding and crashing at my brothers and checking into the hotel the next day. Overkill? sure.. I don't need therapy and i am not nuts. But, I don't see any reason to worry myself if I can avoid it easily.
