Play dates

Do you allow your kids to have play dates with anyone? Only certain kids? Inside or outside?

Do they do extracurricular activities? Do you allow your kid to have play dates with kids who do extracurricular activities?

Just trying to get different perspectives from a conversation I had with a parent and what everyone “allows”

I know my kids are older but my youngest barely does anything with friends now (besides video games) and when given the opportunity I literally almost push them out the door. lol. The change in them is wonderful as they need human interaction as much as adults do.

Re: Play dates

We never really did play dates before covid but we still do them when I actually make plans for them lol.

We have them inside with no mask.

And my daughter is doing cheer. My son plays baseball but my town isn’t done it since covid so that’s why he isn’t doing it right now.

We just got over having covid and it still hasn’t change my stance on letting my kids have play dates or doing activities. Not sure how we got it but it wasn’t from a play date.

Re: Play dates

My one son met his friends ice skating yesterday, and 3 of them went back to the one kids house for a few hours, they played hockey outside. When I went to pick him up, they were all playing hockey in the street with their masks on.

I only let my daughter have a play date with another child that is in her class. This is her bestie, so she’s constantly around her in the classroom and they play outside together anyway.

We mainly hang with two families - so we have play dates with them indoors.

My older DS plays basketball and baseball - basketball is practices and games and baseball just practices right now and my younger DS is taking in person piano lessons.

ETA - they only go to school 2x a week and have only gone 2 days since Thanksgiving so they need interaction.

Re: Play dates

My daughter hangs with her 2 best friends. She's over one of their houses now actually. Indoors, it's freezing out.

She does gymnastics and dance as well.
Her 3 friends are with her in both activities.

She also hangs with her cousins. They do sports as well.

Re: Play dates

Right now, no. The spread in our area has been insane since the holidays and that’s why. Up until November my kids were doing all their sports and play dates but only outdoors with masks. No indoor practices/play dates. Once things calm down and the spread isn’t so rampant I will go back to the outdoor with masks policy lol.

Pretty much this. Before Covid the boys had lots of playdates, sleepovers and even been to places with their friend's families like dinners, amusement parks etc.
Numbers are too high. WE can't afford to get sick since DH owns his own business and people hire him to do construction in their home bc he's alone and doesn't sub out.
Can't afford to quarentine 2 weeks either if exposed.
We hang with a couple of neighbors similar to us and mostly outside. They have been full remote learning since Thanksgiving. Once numbers get lower and more people are vaccinated we will drop our guard a bit.
They did do outdoor sports in Fall, but nothing now.
My 11 yr old is at a friend's now playing outside for a short time. If it's over 40 they go out

Re: Play dates

We only see 2 families. One of the other moms is recovering from breast cancer so we are all super careful on top of covid precautions.

Play dates

No playdates, no extracurricular activities.

I need him to be in school and want to limit outside exposure so he does not need to quarantine unless he is exposed at school. He is in a pod of 10 kids. There are 18 kids total in his class technically, but the other 8 are in a different room. They all socialize when outside with masks on. Currently, 4 kids are quarantined due to exposure outside of school. The teacher livestreams for those kids, but it is obviously not ideal.

I will reevaluate in the spring when the weather is nicer and hopefully cases decrease as people are fully vaccinated and we can meet outdoors with masks.

Ok thanks.

Apparently my child was “removed” from our small circle we had play dates with because we do sports and are too much of a risk. I was just trying to see how cautious others were being.

We haven’t had playdates since Halloween and the ones we did have were all outdoors. My child does a couple extracurricular activities but that has no bearing on our decision not have playdates.

My DD has play dates and they are indoors now since it’s cold out. She’s in dance, some other kids are either in dance and / or gymnastics and some aren’t. It’s a mixture.

Re: Play dates

We stopped playdates about a month ago leading up to Christmas. My daughter does competitive gymnastics so she is there for about 9 hours a week. We also ski on weekends and there is one family that we spend time indoors with.

My husband has covid now and I am pretty sure that I will test positive on the test I took yesterday because I am exhibiting mild symptoms but I haven't left the house (other than to test) since last Tuesday. So even being relatively careful we did still take chances and here we are....

I understand being cautious because the rates are so high right now but I have to say this couldn't have been better timing for us to have to quarantine for multiple reasons and I have wanted to just get Covid out of the way since the get go. My husband has it way worse than me and even he is not very ill. I understand that everyone's experience is different, but I am willing to bet our experience with mild to moderate symptoms makes up 95% plus of the cases for middle aged healthy people.

We have indoor playdates with 1 family with masks.

DD goes to dance twice a week. They're 6ft apart and wear masks. She did soccer in the fall and will again in spring.

I feel really bad for your child because all they know is they are being left out and can't play with friends they used to all of a sudden.
I than God all my daughter's friends parents are on the same page as me because that wouldn't sit well with me

We let our daughter do play dates indoors and outdoors with two of her friends she had before covid. She is in dance school and goes to in person school. Her friends also go to in person school as well. She would have more play dates but its so hard making new friends nowadays. She is an only child and 5 years old, i do not want this whole thing to mess her up socially and mentally by holding her back from things.

My kids aren't socializing outside of the days they are in school. My son played soccer in the fall and my daughter takes Irish Step classes, one day in-person and the other day virtual.

Re: Play dates

You know I also think that it depends how many kids you have, how comfortable you are with playdates. We have three kids and they were all having indoor playdates and it got to the point where they were each having one or two kids over a day or going to someone else's house. It became overwhelming - more so for my husband then me, but it felt to risky. I wasn't just worrying about the couple kids in my house but where there parents had been and where their siblings had been. Ironically now that we totally reined it in we still ended up with COVID.

I would just tell your child that this is only temporary. Everyone is getting the vaccine now and I think things will start to go back to normal by the summer time. Or give him the choice - sports or playdates....

Nope - no playdates. But my son's schedule overlaps with my boyfriend's schedule, and he has 4 kids so he gets to play with other kids every other week.

Occasionally, we'll set up an Among Us event on Zoom with other kids so they can chat while playing.

We scaled back too since there were cases popping up at DHs work and didn’t want to expose anyone and ended up being exposed to Covid through our friends we’ve been with since the beginning (he works in the same field) so anything is possible.

Hope your symptoms stay mild and your DH feels better soon.

No issues with play dates. We’ve had outside and inside play dates with kids that also do the same extracurricular activities as my kids.
