For my wedding I expected to get gifts. For random get togethers at our house I would never expect anything but for the big events, christenings, communions etc. I expect gifts.

I'll answer.
I love getting gifts. it's so much fun.
BUT I don't expect them. they are a treat. and I don't throw a party with the idea that I'll make money off of it.
I love having my friends around, hosting, kicking up and dancing...getting drunk...living life.
that is enough for me. anything extra is gravy.
That's me to a tee.
I love the gifts but I don't throw a party with the expectation of getting any.

If I throw a party I don't expect guests to bring anything. I make suggestions if they offer (i.e. dessert, ice, chips).
I am not offended if someone comes empty-handed but if they eat A LOT and drink EVEN MORE, then yes, I would  and be a little annoyed.

Honestly.... I NEVER through a party to get presents. I even tell people not to bring anything.
BUT on my birthday.... I am all about getting presents.

However, one of my biggest pet peeves is the whole concept of "cover the plate". It is not my concern what venue you choose to host your wedding/christening/bar mitzvah....
I give the same if the event is in your backyard or at the Ritz-Carlton.
I agree completely - this has always annoyed me!

No, I don't expect a gift.
However, if you come to my wedding and BOUNCE the check you gave me (cousin) or are my brother and don't give me anything at all... yeah I'm 
Honestly, especially for parties other than weddings, I don't ever expect anything.
