a bit of a nervy question-

i work for the board of ed. ill be starting my 5th year in september.

after the 5th year in boe you get a longevity increase of about 1,000. every 6 months you get small incremental raises, and every big year (ie, end of the 5th, 10th etc) you get a larger raise.

my summer job is for a long island school district. all summer long i keep hearing how much more money the teachers on long island make, and how they work fewer days than we do. someone told me that she just got a $15,000 raise because she made it to her 7th year!!

Chat Icon

could you give me a ballpark figure for how much a teacher with a masters degree would make in your school district, and tell what school dist you work in?

i want to know if its worth it for me to start looking for a new job Chat Icon

also, what is the max that a teacher can make in your school district?

I have my masters and I made a little less than 60,000 the past 2 years. This was for Step 1 and 2.

I hope we get some answers. NYC schools salary scale is very public but you never hear anything about Long Island schools. I often wonder how much of a difference it is too?

I was the same a few years back, but i have gone up substanially since then because i have busted my *** and now am at my Mastesr +40, which is a differential in my disitrct. i also do the drama club at my school and homework club, which are paid after school acitivites that helps fatten up the check!

This will be my 12th year. I have a master's +75 credits, and I will make in the mid 90's this year, 100K+ next year. I happen to be one of the lowest paid school district in Nassau County.

my husband will make 69k next year ... and its only his 3rd year I, regretfully make peanuts compared to all of my friends who are teaching on long island Chat Icon... its a huge difference!! the starting salary is comparable maybe but they jump up about 5 thousand every year and can go to to masters plus 90!!

Re: a bit of a nervy question-

I will be entering my 6th year with my Masters +15. I'll be just under 80.

Long Island is tough though, because there can be HUGE differences between the districts. You can check out some school webties though - I know my school has the contract published right on the website.

Well, I'm in a lower paying district.

Twelfth year, MS plus 60 and I make a significant amount less. I also am certified to teach several college courses.

I am "losing" money staying at my districtChat Icon
I might sound bitter but I am no longer putting in the time that I used to.

We can't keep teachers for so many subjects... several starting teachers, even at MS. Lately most have been leaving the profession entirely... it's sad.

Oh man.. I know things happen for a reason but this makes me think I should have started my career in a different way (involving LI) instead of starting in a Catholic school.

Same thing with working upstate. I took almost a 20k paycut.

While my rent is lower than my friends', many other things (like food) is much more expensive.

Better yet, take a look at Catholic school salaries. After 11 years and a MSEd, I was making 50K and I believe it might have been a bit under that even. Chat Icon

That's cool though...LOVED my job and considered myself richly rewarded in so many ways other than monetary.

But...you can see why I'm a SAHM now. Chat Icon

Re: a bit of a nervy question-

I'm at step 8, MA+45, and I think it's around 85K, however we're going into year two with no contract so it will hopefully be higher when we settle our contract dispute.

My DH is step 6, MA+30, and he is under 70K - his district is one of the lower paying Nassau districts.

DH and I teach in what we thought was middle of the road paying district in Suffolk.

I'm Step 13 Masters +75 and I'll make low 90's this year.

DH is Step 12 Masters +15 and he'll be making 80 this year.

My DH worked in a Catholic HS here on LI for 7 years before switching to a Public School. Hopefully soon the bill will pass in Albany that will allow you to buy back and private school time you had. There was also a bill a couple of years ago that did get Vetoed down about women being able to buy back their Maternity time. Maybe that will come back one day too!

What districts are the higher paying and which are the lower paying?

I don't know if we can even name districts on here but I was just curious. ALthough any district appears to be better paying than NYC over the long run.

I actually spoke to a public school principal (in Queens) that said that I might be able to buy back my private school time.
I hope it's true and I hope I get into public school!

i don't think that lowest paying necessarily. that's about what it is in my district, maybe a little less and i was always told we are one of the higher paying districts. I am Step 5 Masters +40 and making only a little more than that and i have a year on you, so i think you're fine!
