A doctor's note to give them water?? really??? FRIDAY UPDATE (if anyone cares, LOL!)
I recently told the teacher in my twins' room that I'd rather they not get fruit juice with their afternoon snack, and to give them water instead. (they get milk with their breakfast and lunch). I explained to her that I TRY to limit the sugar they get, and I want them to get used to drinking water, along with milk. My boys are very big (I have concerns about one of the twins, Christopher, he is very chunky -- I love his little rolls - they ARE cute....and the ped did say they generally don't worry about weight until they are 3 or 4, but *I* worry (especially since I have a weight problem and had gastric bypass a few years ago, and my DH is big -- as is most of his family). I want to teach them good eating habits early on. They get plenty of fresh fruit at home (daycare also gives them fruit), so I don't see the need for the juice.
Anyway, she told me yesterday that she spoke to the director (who I am not buddies with -- I think she does not like me, either) and the director said I would have to get a doctor's note saying they can't have juice. Seriously? Has anyone ever heard of this? I can't believe I have to get a note from my friggin doctor to give my children a cup of water, rather than sugary fruit juice. Maybe I'm overreacting, I don't know.....
UPDATE****** DANG!!! This is the response I got from the director when I asked if they were a part of that program (note the last paragraph, which I think is a jab, IMO)
"According to State guidelines we have to give 2 food componants for snack. The juice that we use is 100% juice so we can count it as a fruit. So first and foremost this is a State guideline. And yes you are correct that since we are on the Federal Food Program we also have to give 2 food componants. According to both agencies 1/2 cup is the proper portion. There are times we will give children a little more if they are still wanting more but do limit that as well. If the doctor states that the boys cannot have juice we will abide by that, but will ask that on days juice is on the menu that you supply a proper substatuite. This would be a 1/2 cup of fruit or vegatable per child. When a child has a food allergey or diet need we do everything possible to provide a substatute but cannot always do so. Throughout the day children are offered water. This is always done after we come in from outside. I totally agree with you that children should receive more water in their diet so the teachers are instructed to do so. I did talk to Carrie and Shannon this AM about the boys food intake and your concerns about their sugar levels. They both informed me that there have been a few days that they brought in a chocolate type cheerio. Generally the end of August the beginning of September (when the school system starts back) I send out a letter reminding parents that we do not mind if their child brings in whatever they are finishing eating from home but it needs to be a non-chocolate, non-peanut, low in sugar type breakfast item. Thank you Wendy"
So, I was thinking about sending this:
"The chocolate cheerios that we gave them for 3 days has 9 grams of sugar, 1 gram of fiber….as compared to the 29 grams of sugar and zero fiber contained in the fruit juice concentrate that you provide. Also, we were never informed not to give anything with chocolate in it, but will refrain since it's a rule. It seems to me it was brought up in your email as a dig regarding our concerns about sugar, and I'm not sure what I have ever done to deserve it. I have tried to be nothing but nice to you and your staff, but I tend to refrain from voicing any concerns whatsoever since I get a very defensive reply whenever I say something.
You will have the doctor's note, as well as fresh fruit to give my children. Thanks."
****Friday update***** So, she never bothered to respond to my email above or address me when I picked up the boys last night....I guess she doesn't need my $1600 a month! I have an appointment after work today at a daycare center close to my home. Although I had my heart set on using the center at my church since, for the most part, I knew some of the members and trusted that they genuinely loved my boys, I am tired of feeling that I can't voice a concern with the director without getting pushback or snarky comments.

WHAT?! That is ridiculous!
Tell them DR MOM has requested that HER children don't need sugar and please give them water (which doesn't need a prescription unless somethings changed... Ha Ha!)

NO. that is reeeeeeeeediculous. I would be livid. This is the fluid you WANT your child to drink.. not a medication and not really your doctor's business.
And FTR.. I am pretty darned relaxed and don't get worked up about most things.. BUT, that would pizz me off!

That is absolutely insane!!! You are their mother, and YOU decide what they drink. PERIOD. If they do not respect your wishes or parenting choices, then it is time to look for a new place for daycare. Who do they think they are?!?!?!?

OK, so I am not nuts, then What kills me is that I adore their teacher, and this is the only christian-based childcare in the area (which is important to me). I'd hate to pull them out....I am so friggin torn....
I will get them their stupid note, but I think we need to have yet another talk with the director.....

Re: A doctor's note for give them water?? really???
Maybe my situation was different because I had a preemie but we did have to get clearance from our ped to give DD water since it was empty calories.
But in your case it does sound like they are being a PITA.

Crashing from pregnancy but I am a daycare provider.
They need a drs note because they probably participate in the CAFP(child adult food program, a federal food program) which monitors the food they provide. If a child is not eating or drinking what is served the monitor will want it documented. Without documentation they can lose their funding.

Ahh, that makes sense.....I think they do have some kind of program like that. Now I feel like a witch! I'm glad I didn't send her a nasty email, how embarassing THAT would have been!

OK I think she's just being a ******! That is ridiculous. She probably wants to make your like harder since you are asking them to do something you think is better than what they do.

Makes sense but why not just tell the mother that's the reason.

Re: A doctor's note for give them water?? really???
I could MAYBE understand them wanting something on record as a "CYA" if the boys were allergic or something.........but simply b/c you requested they do not have added sugar??? Totally unnecessary !! ETA- posted before reading the daycare provider's post !!
So, it is a CYA, but they could have explained that !

They are very strict (cacp). I had to get a note from a doctor for a 13 month old in our program was allowed to have formula still because the federal guidelines are 12 months and younger. They want to cover themselves for everything. Licensing requirements for daycare and the food program are often silly but they are very strict about enforcing them even when they make no sense.

I get that, but I think the OP's daycare could have explained WHY they need a Dr's note,

Re: A doctor's note for give them water?? really???
yeah, I wish they would have just told me this instead of a note saying "you need a doctor's note to give them water"....I did send her an email and asked her to confirm if the center is in that program. If she gets snippy back, I may lose it (she tends to get defensive everytime I voice a concern)...

I still don't understand why a note in the file signed by the parent wouldn't be enough. I can understand that they want to make sure they are following guidelines, but in this case, it seems like documentation from the parent should be enough. IMO.

I completely agree. If they are giving you a hard time about what you choose for your child, then I think its time to find a new place. There is no medical reason as to why you would need a Drs note to NOT give them juice, thats just your choice as a parent.

Re: A doctor's note for give them water?? really???
My daycare has asked for notes for things that I think are a little silly, but I get it. They have to worry about their licensing and insurance and all the parents who will say "well, so and so's kid can have it, why can't mine?"
I love my daycare and think their wonderful, so even when they ask me for notes I think might be unnecessary, I get them because it makes their lives easier.
