Poor girl. One of her potential babies lost her chance. 
She still has two more, hopefully for her sake one of them will work out.
Wow, I can't believe she won't even eat. That's unbelievable the instinct that takes over.

I think of you and Sunny every morning. There's a homemade sign for eggs, $2.00 a dozen that I pass daily. Apparently, there are at least two families in my little neighborhood who raise chickens.

Well its been 9 days, so we are getting there. the chicks should hatch on wed june 4th.
she is still super determined, she never leaves the nest unless I take her out. she goes & gets a drink, finds something to eat, sometimes takes a quick dustbath(a process most birds do to keep mites & other bugs off of them), then she lets out the "broody scream", pecks any of the girls that come near her just to let them know she's not in the mood & runs 100 miles an hour with her wings out back to the nest. I've got to try to get a picture of her doing that, its hysterical. I'm really hoping to build a candling box sometime this weekend, I'll take pics if we do it.
The chicks she's hatching are called Welsummers, they are a very old but now very rare English breed. They lay "chocolate eggs", the shells are the darkest brown. Hopefully she's got two girls going under there!

Sometime yesterday another one of Sunny's eggs broke under her. We had company all day & I didn't get to check on her in the morning, DH said she was fine but he didn't take her off the nest.
I don't know how long the egg was broken but I didn't see anything but dry shell. The last egg is still there, in perfect condition. We are going to candle it today & if there is life in there I'm going to arrange to buy two one day old chicks to give Sunny the day her one egg hatches, so she'll have three babies.
She's got two weeks to go, I can't believe two out of the three eggs broke already
I should have given her more to sit on.

Hopefully her last one is the golden egg. I think that's really nice that you can buy 2 more chicks so she has her 3 babies. I love that idea. So sweet. I eagerly await your posts...

Aw, poor Sunny Good luck with the golden egg I think it's great that you are buying her chicks!

There are people that breed chickens either on purpose or by accident & they sell the fertile eggs online to rooster-less people like me or people that just want to try raising a different breed.
Thanks for the support, I'm hoping she is able to keep the last egg safe.

so I finally candled the last "golden egg" as you guys named it. It was a lot harder to get good pics than I thought it would be. One of the challenges is that I'm working with the darkest brown egg you can get, if it were white it would be much easier.
So anyway here is Sunny's egg at 12 days
and here is a 14 day old egg from a candling website
Can you see the similarity? the dark area is the chick floating with the yolk(its nutrients), the other area is its air space.
I'm pretty convinced we have a healthy baby in there, now I've just got to keep that precious egg safe for 9 more days!!!!
And just for fun, here are a couple of pictures of her today, she was not in the mood to be photographed!

She has a little dirt on her beak & she was "growling" at me because I was annoying her

ok, its day 13 & she was out to eat breakfast & now she's back in the nest.
I showed the candling pics to some of the "experts" on my chicken keeping message board, they all think it looks good!
I was hoping to see more like this, but I couldn't see movement
