Re: No good news....AKA-Big news on "the farm" chicken related-
So we finally opened the egg today, day 25 and very sadly we discovered what appeared to be a beautiful, feathered, fully developed chick that was not alive. Little Liana was there all along & Sunny did a great job of incubating that egg but for some reason she was unable to hatch. She was so cute I took pictures of the baby & sent them to "the chicken people" to see if i can get some idea of what may have gone wrong. I'm heartbroken for Sunny, I took her off the nest while we examined the chick & she went right back to the empty nest I'm going to try to "break her brood" over the next few days and break down the nursery I had set up in the greenhouse.
I'm really bummed & I hope I didn't do anything or Not do something that caused the baby not to hatch.
Anyway thank you all so much for following along with me on this, its really nice to know you guys care

Re: The saddest news of all-AKA-Big news on "the farm" chicken related-
So I'm starting to get some feedback from the chicken people, they say the baby died no earlier than day 20 & since her yolk was absorbed she drowned she couldn't get out in time after she absorbed her yolk & drowned on the fluid that they float in!!!!! Everything I've read & everything I was told says you should never intervene & assist the hatch! There was a time on wednesday I wanted to just make a little crack in the shell to see if it would help but I didn't because the old school chicken people told me its a big no-no. Now I just feel terrible that she drowned in there I don't know if I could have helped her but I sure feel bad. damn it

Oh this is so heartbreaking. You did what you were instructed to do. You could not have known to do anything else. Poor Sunny, she tried her hardest and so did you Kelly.

You did the best that you could... following the advice of people who have done this for years. Please don't be hard on yourself. I am so sorry that Sunny had to go thru this... Will you give her more eggs to sit on or do the chicken people advise against it? I'm so sorry.

Re: The saddest news of all-AKA-Big news on "the farm" chicken related-
Thanks everyone. Sunny is so skinny & its so hot now, as much as I'd love to go buy a couple of day old chicks for her I think she deserves a break. She may go broody again before the summer is over and we can try to let her hatch eggs again. A few chicken people suggested that I try getting the fertile eggs locally rather than getting them shipped from somewhere. Sunny had eggs that came from Tennessee. The chicken people said it may have been an excessive humidity problem that caused the baby to be unable to hatch but that would have been more likely if I were using an incubator not a hen. They also said a certain amount of babies just aren't strong enough to survive so there was probably nothing I could have done. She just looked so perfect, its hard to believe she wasn't meant to live. Even though the end result was heartbreaking I really learned a lot about the whole process and I'm encouraged to try again. Sorry that it ended in such a sad way, I know everyone that followed was hoping to see a fluffy chick by now. Rich wants to start a business venture that embraces my love of chickens. He wants to build small totally contained & user friendly custom coops & sell them to people that want to try small scale chicken keeping in their backyard. It sounds like a great idea. So anyway that's the story, I'm sure there will be other news on "the farm" before the summer is over, I'll be sure to let you guys know!

I was thinking this, what if they were overheated in shipping or somethiing like that, that doomed them from the start?
