a little upset right now - ETA a new question

just went to pick up dd from preschool. she 2.7 now- will be 3 in august. cutoff is oct, so there are kids in her class that have been 3 for awhile already. anyhow, teacher said now is the time of year they will asess kids in general. anyhow, DD does not know her colors, and thats basically what they work on this year in preschool. so she said DD doesnt know colors, and also sometimes doesnt follow instructions, also said shes not sure how much DD is getting, for ex, they jsut did the purim story, and she said she didnt think dd "got" it, didnt think it was sinking in. but- DD did repeat to me, at home, some things, which i told teacher. anyhow, would you worry? i mean, she is the teacher, but not sure if i worry.
btw, we do work on colors at home- she someitmes gets them right, sometimes not- i think its a guessing game. she knows the sounds all the the ABC's make, can recognize most of them, and know some shapes.

ETA: honestly, i dotn even know what to worry ABOUT. i mean, what does the teacher think is the issue here?

second ETA: would you start sending her every day? she currently goes 3xa week

I think every child is different. Maybe she doesn't fully get it, but sounds like she's taking it all in. At that age some kids aren't doing that much. She'll learn at her own pace.

OMG shes not even 3 yet!!! I would NOT worry!!!! and I teach 3 year olds.
Every child matures differently and she is so young!!!

According to my son's EI therapist those types of skills (colors and letters) are a 3 year old skill and NOT a 2 year old skill. The fact that she knows some of them is great!

yes, there are 2 year olds who know this stuff. BUT, when considering aptitude these things are not assessed on a 2 year old.

I don't specifically know about shapes but would imagine it's the same thing.

I wouldn't worry. She sounds on pace.

I wouldn't worry, kids learn at their own pace.

My niece is the same age and they are doing colors in her preschool as well. Some days everything is yellow, other days everything is pink.

I think my niece is very bright, just last week my sister was telling me that when she was making lunch the knife she was using caught the sun and flashed. My niece asked what was that and my sister explained it was a reflection of the sun in the metal of the knife. Later on that day my niece was looking at the sliding glass door and said to my sister "hey mommy, look its my reflection" So not only did she remember the word, she understood it in a different context. ....but she doesn't know her colors - maybe colors just aren't of interest to her or your DD right now.

DD had a similar issue last year in her 2's class. Her teacher didn't think she "got it". We didn't hold her back and put her in the 3 year old class and she's doing great. She's the youngest one in her class - Oct birthday and cut-off in our town is Dec so it does reflect sometimes but your DD is so little. She will know the colors and stuff in time and that's why you are sending her to pre-school - to help learn this stuff.

according my DSs 6 therapists.... colors, shapes, numbers, alphabet are skills that begin to emerge at 3

I've taught kindergarten and to be honest, I don't always even worry then....usually by the end of k, you might (unless there's lots of red flags!) but kids develop at different rates and "click" at diff times! Its hard not to compare kids sometimes but just like we all are good at different things as adults, same for kids!

As an aside, I have a younger sister who was born in November and is in NYC public school. The cutoff for NYC schools is January so she is one of the youngest in her class.

I noticed since kindergarten that she always seems behind her first report card of the year. BUT she always catches up by the second. At first my parents and I were concerned but then we realized that she just needs a little more time.

I think maybe the teacher is making you aware of these things so that you can work on them at home.

I am actually a little surprised to hear that this is a 3 year old skill though. My DD turned 3 in Dec but has known colors, shapes, numbers and letters since about 20 months and she is by no means a genius. However, she did not walk until 15 months so go figure.

I definately think that kids "get" different things at their own pace.
