UPDATE! I'm so upset - taking Jack to the doctor in a little bit.....
Jack has always done this shake when he is excited or showing emotion.....he takes his arms and makes a fist and straightens his arms downward and does like a shake. Almost like he is super excited, he does this when we hand him toys and go to pick him up.....I never thought of it as a bad thing until this morning. My Mom saw him do it when she was taking him out of the stroller and he then shook for about 5 seconds, including his head. She was white when she came into the house and it really freaked her out. So now here I am crying thinking terrible things. He is perfectly normal otherwise, so I don't know if this is just a habit and a weird thing he does, or if it is something I should worry about. I'm taking him to the doctor at 10:20 although I don't think there is much he can tell me.
***********
So everything is fine thank god!
The doctor said that the movements are to to myelination. It's when the nerves aren't fully matured in the body....they mature around 18 months. He said it is totally normal and he gave Jack a full exam. He said he seems perfect, so there is nothing to worry about.
I am so relieved!

How old is he? My DD did that for awhile and we used to get concerned. The dr. said it was normal and she outgrew it. Try not to worry too much. Wait & see what the dr. says.

Take a deep breath - - - I am sure all is fine. You are doing the right thing, take him to the dr. and just let them check him out.

Re: I'm so upset - taking Jack to the doctor in a little bit.....
I know first hand how scary that can be. When DS was 9 months we reconzied an 'involuntary' twitch. He would shrug his shoulder and move his arm across his body. At first we thought it was an 'excited' reaction to something - like most babies that flap and wave, but we realized it was a bit repetitive and involuntary.
To make a really loooong story short, the doctor sent us for an EEG and blood tests (electrolyte levels).
The final diagnosis was 'neurological immaturity' - where the connections in the brain were just not mature enough and it was causing myclonic spasms.... they said he would grow out of it. He is 19 months and doesn't do it anymore.
First thing I would do it VIDEOTAPE it .. that way you can show it to your ped, a neuroligist (if needed) and anyone else they refer you too. Babies do not preform on command and this will be invaluable.
It is very scary, I will not lie ----to not know if there was something wrong with my little perfect baby. Luckily it was something he did grow out of, but ever since that day we discovered it, I have watched him like a hawk daily to see signs of anything that was wrong.
Good luck and let me know if you need anything or have questions.

DD does that sometimes too, but we are not concerned, she'll do it and then she'll start laughing , even though her face gets all red.lol. I don't think it's anything to worry about , but you should def go see the dr if you think it's more than a "funny thing" . I do know few parents whose DC do the exact same thing.

DS does the same thing when he is super excited and he just turned 2. It is hand flapping which is normal. Yes, it can be signs of other things but unless accompanies by other tendencies is normal.

That's a great idea to video tape it. My son snores something fierce and I recorded it on my cell phone. The doc wouldn't have done anything - then he heard it and sent us for tests.
Hope everything works out well for you today.

That sounds like pretty normal infant behavior.

I saw him do it and remember Carmine doing the exact same thing..
Maybe your mom just got so worried b/c none of you ever did it..
I doubt anything is wrong.. Carmine and Nicky both did that.
Let me know what happens

I'm so glad the Dr. set your mind at ease. DS used to do a shaking thing when he was excited too.

You scared me half to death as I was reading your post because that sounds like my DD!! Emerson does the same thing with her arms and hands whenever she gets excited. I just figured it was a cute quirky thing of babyhood. Glad I was right!! Whew!!
