A Question for Parents of Disabled Children

This may be a long shot, but if you have a disabled child who is past the point of fitting in a standard store bought stroller, how do you transport them? Have you purchased a Convaid (disability stroller) or a push chair? We are finally at this point for my son, and I'm not sure which way to turn. The costs are astronomical and I want to make the right decision. Since you can't look at these things in the stores (only online), it's really hard to tell what is what and what is worth the thousands they want for them.

Any advice at all would help. Thanks so much!

I don't have any info for you, but is there a way that your medical insurance would cover the cost??

I am a social worker at United Cerebral Palsy. We usually have the person come in for a chair evaluation. Where does he/she attend school? Can they send out a recommendation for a chair eval? I wonder if our clinic does outside referrals. I can ask tommorrow if you need more info. I would not buy one without your child getting evaluated.

Hi. I would appreciate any more info you have. No, unfortunately, we do not qualify for Medicaid ... they say we make too much money. Yeah ... right!
We have private medical insurance, but as of today, they are telling me they don't cover this type of item. I'm trying to filter through the medical paperwork tonight to see why this wouldn't qualify as "durable medical equipment." My son is not in school anymore because they couldn't manage his medical needs. We are now homeschooling.

The insurance is saying they won't cover it, but I'm not sure they are correct. You just never know when you talk to a random operator. I need to speak to a manager tomorrow and explain the situation in detail.

My son is 7 1/2, but he is very small. He is just barely 40 lbs.

Also, the steps I would take for your ins to have to pay for it is to get your MD to send you to a Phys therapist who is going to make it a necessity. I dont even get how they could consider denying a claim for a wheelchair...its not a luxury item.

We've already done the MD and PT referrals and letters. The problem with the insurance is that this is considered a Convaid Disability PushChair/Stroller. It is geared for a child 30 to 110 lbs, has all kinds of adaptive straps, etc and runs almost $1,700. The glitch is that it is referred to as a "stroller" and that is a big no no with the insurance. It's really a play on words, but the insurance company is making my life miserable. Without this, my son cannot really go anywhere. He can only walk (with assistance) very short distances, and it is soooooooooooooo limiting for both him and our family. This is a very big issue for us.

My son is multiply-disabled. He suffers from a severe seizure disorder, ataxia, apraxia, functional deafness and a number of developmental delays. He walks (very unsteadily) and falls constantly. He cannot be left unattended. He tires extremely fast and can only walk short distances. He also suffers from hyponatremia (low sodium drop) and dehydration ... which are MAJOR issues in the spring and summer months. So ... as you can imagine ... we cannot go anywhere or do anything outdoors without a stroller for him to ride and rest in. Now that he is almost 8 years old and not fitting in the standard store strollers anymore, we are having a problem.

We were declined services. Everything is income based and the level for a family of four is ridiculously low. We qualify for nothing!

One last thing...is it about the $ or is it about what needs to be on it and what is the right one for him? BC my thoughts ...even if he was getting just an evaluation and ins didnt pay for it...at least...you would know what you need to get, right? Though I am still talking to my resources about the $ end tomm. I will let ya know.

Maclaren makes a special needs stroller that seems like your son will fit into.

Here's one on Ebay

But I don't think your insurance company can deny you a wheelchair. I would really fight that because IMO that is ridiculous. Insurance companies have gotten out of handChat Icon
