a vent - store employee rudeness
I feel like I encounter rude store employees so often nowadays.
From the sales person at TCP who watched me struggle to open the door with my stroller & a shopping bag in hand on my way out after I had just spent money there to countless cashiers who don't even make eye contact or thank you after your purchase, it's obnoxious. The pharmasist at rite aide yesterday didn't even turn her body towards me or look up from her register & stuck her arm up in he air without saying a word with my change in her hand. I was the one who greeted her & asked her how she was doing & then thanked her for the rude way I was handed my change back. If I hadn't said a word, it would have been a competely silent transaction. I'm like do people just have no social sense or is everyone just an a-hole.

I think it is only going to get worse as todays teenagers enter the work force
This weekend a cashier was TEXTING the entire time she rang up my purchase. It took forever since she had to keep stopping to text. One lane open with a long line and she thinks it was ok to stand there and text as if the store were empty

Re: a vent - store employee rudeness
I am right with you.
Customer service today is just plain out rude. Most of the employees I encounter are plain out lazy as well.
I have no problem calling out a cashier that is texting in between customers while on the check out line.
I always ask if they are getting paid to text or ring up my order. I have even complained to the manager.
I think this just shows how lazy and unprofessional most young adults are today. They have little respect for their jobs. Most can't even bother to say hello and if you ask a question, half of them mumble or "don't know".
I'm also bothered by the conversations that they have on the floor amongst one another - about the parties they've attended over the weekend where they got stoned and drunk off their assses. Not the time or place to be shouting this info.
I saw one young guy at Target tell a customer to "hold on a sec" while he finished telling his co-worker his story about the concert he attended.

Re: a vent - store employee rudeness
I constantly notice this in stores now and it drives me nuts
If someone is texting during a transaction, i'd definitely tell the store manager and tell them that if their employee can't be bothered to pay attention, then i can't be bothered to shop there anymore
Unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there who don't see how rude it is to be on their phone texting or whatever during interactions with other people and this is only going to become more and more common. It happens when i get together with friends as well - there's always some person sitting there on their phone doing something.

Yes people are just rude well some. I was with my two year old nephew the other day. A young guy seen me behind him with the stroller instead of holding it for me he closed the door. SO rude SO IM like thanks for holding the door!

Re: a vent - store employee rudeness
I went to a DD drive through last Saturday around 10am. The speaker said "Good morning, how can I help you" and I said, "Good morning! How're you doing?" in my "smiley voice".
When I got up to the window, he didn't charge me for my coffee because I was the first person to say good morning back to him, and he'd be there since 6am!
My point is that for every lousy cashier, there's a good one out there somewhere.

Re: a vent - store employee rudeness
I cashier at Stop and Shop as a second job. I agree completely about cashiers who text while working are rude, but I also think that the customers who are on line and on the phone or texting are also very rude. It's fine to be walking around the store on the phone, but when you get on a cashiers line it's time to end that conversation.

Actually I find that being on the phone while walking around the store is equally as rude. Those people stop the flow of the aisles are not courteous to their fellow shoppers and haven't a clue what's going on around them.

Re: a vent - store employee rudeness
I worked retail and customer service for about 10 years through high school and college. I remember how hard it was, but I also did my best to be polite and courteous. That being said the texting and rudeness gets under my skin. Especially when there are people out of work and people with financial difficulties due to the recession that are dying for any type of job.
I have no problem e-mailing a company the good experiences AND the bad. I e-mailed Sephora about a year ago to tell them how fabulous their customer service was in two of their stores. The girls were so courteous that even DH was impressed.

I agree 100%. I get more frustrated at fellow customers than at employees. The total obliviousness just kills me. Let me leave my cart in the middle of the aisle, blocking everyone. I've been known to move other people's carts or push my way thru. One time in the produce section one guy said he should call his insurance company because I actually went thru the aisleway instead of standing there and staring at everyone else wondering who is going to make the move.

I would have gone right to the manager and complained. That is UNACCEPTABLE!
I was a cashier for Waldbaums for years...in HS and college... and we werent even allowed to talk to the other cashier nevertheless text or eat....

Re: a vent - store employee rudeness
I don't know, but for me it's really more when the store employee has rude mannerisms like throwing the shopping bag on the counter or doesn't acknowledge you & can't even crack a smile or a thank you that irritates me.
Yes, I agree customers can be rude too but I always, every single time say hello & smile to the sales person/cashier I am dealing with so it irritates me more.

Re: a vent - store employee rudeness
I agree that customers can be rude.
I remember a lady behind me getting mad that the cashier was taking the time to say hello and how are you today as he was scanning my items.
She loudly and rudely said "ok enough with the small talk, I have to be somewhere" Mind you the lane next to us was open and empty.
However, rude employees are worse. They are paid to work, not to be on their cells or to be chatting about their weekends and telling customers to wait as they finish their stories.
If someone asks a question, they should answer clearly not with their head hanging down, shuffling their feet and mumbling.

Re: a vent - store employee rudeness
This drives me nuts!!
I was in Target with my mom not too long ago looking for printer ink. I saw a worker and asked where the ink was, he pointed in the direction of the glass case they are in. I walk over there and realize that they are locked behind the glass so another worker tells me to push the button for assistance, so I do. Who walks over? The same idiot that pointed me in the direction of the locked glass case that HE is responsible for. I mean, really? How lazy can you be? He takes the ink and says "I have to bring it to the register for you" I said, "ok, that's all I need so I'm going to check out now" I walk up there and I'm waiting, and waiting..and waiting. The glass case was about 20ft from the register!!! what did he do, take the scenic route? LAZY!!

Re: a vent - store employee rudeness
Yeah, I still shake my head at it. There were literally 5 people with their carts just standing there looking at one another. I waited for 10 seconds and then when nobody moved, I went.
I really should have asked him what insurance he was going to call. Medical? Auto? I didn't touch him or his cart so I wonder what the report would have looked like. "The air that she caused by walking by gave me a chill?"

I can't stand that. I once worked in customer service and was always super polite. Now I'm usually the one saying thank you, have a nice day while the cashier ignores me.

Re: a vent - store employee rudeness
I completely agree! Last night we ate dinner at a chain restaurant in our local mall (Joe's American for those that are local to me ). Our waiter was just the opposite! He was so over the top fantastic, that I went out of my way to tell the manager how wonderful he was. As many times as the managers hear complaints, I am sure the number of compliments are WAY far behind!

I completely agree with you. I also agree that it's going to get worse. Management has to train the employees that it's unacceptable texting or using the phone at all during work. It's really bad

I think this is an overall sense that MANY people are being rude now. Entitlement, cutting in front of you in front of you on the road when nobody is behind you, the cashier having a full conversation over your head with the cashier being you, etc...

I was just going to write this! I can't believe how many rude people I have encountered in the last week: I was yelled at for not letting somone reverse while I had the right of way in a parking lot (the woman was at least 70+); being cut-off while on line at the gas station; cashiers continuing coversations about their (very) personal weekend plans; oh, and a couple pushing their way into my "standing room only" space at Church and then giving me a dirty look! I really felt yesterday that I must be the one who was going crazy!

Re: a vent - store employee rudeness
I was once buying something at Harrow's and - no joke - the cashier was using an electric razor while he was doing the transaction. WHAT?!? I was shocked by that, but then was even more shocked when he acted insulted when I asked if he could wait until I left the store before he did that.
I've never been back to a Harrow's -- and that was almost 3 years ago.
