Re: A very long childcare WWYD
I would do a nanny or an in home daycare.
A nanny would run you for Queens 5-600 a week.
Would you consider an au pair?

I am not at all comfortable with the idea of a nanny - so I'd opt for daycare, regardless of the pickup situation -
I agree... Daycare IMO is the way to go...

I would do a nanny but if you're not comfortable with your nanny now handling both kids, I would start interviewing soon for a new one. We have a nanny because I don't want to deal with picking up and dropping off from daycare and trying to catch a train.

DEFINTELY the NANNY!!!! The extra money is worth saving you the stress of the pick up situation at daycare. Its also more attention for your kids since they are the only ones the nanny is watching! GL!
I agree!!!! I'm going through a bad pickup situation now and the stress isn't worth it!

Re: A very long childcare WWYD
I hang out with a teacher...boys were almost 2.5 years apart.
I was surprised she did not go with daycare center, as it would have been cheaper.
She chose in home. She said something i never considered. She wanted her 2 to spend their days together. Now they are at their little storytimes together, eat together, walks together.
she wanted them to have each other since they could not have her during those hours.
I only had one at the time and did not fully get it. With 2, I totally see what she means.
good luck!

I've actually thought about that too.
It is really sad to think that 2 young siblings would really only be spending weekends together.

This is starting to bother me too as my boys are getting set to start daycare in a couple of weeks. Ryan will be across the hall from him.

Are there any car services you can hire for pick up for you and the kids ? I know that sounds far fetched, but with the $$ you'd save on a nanny if you do daycare - it might be better to hire some sort of driver.
That was what I was thinking! Or even getting a cheap car just to do pick ups?

If you can swing the money for a nanny and you find an exellent one that you feel really comfortable with I'd do that, especially if the nanny will do some stuff around your house (lighthousekeeing, make beds, starting dinner, kids laundry, etc.). When they're sick she will be with them instead of you having to take time off to keep them out of daycare. You won't have to lug kids out of the house early, pack bags for daycare, etc. These little conveniences make such a difference!

ITA - If the nanny is sick then you have to find another way of getting coverage for the kids. At a daycare there are many teachers. Do you know this daycare already since DS goes there already? You should feel safe with them.
My mom would be the coverage for any days the nanny calls out.
My DS is currently split between a part-time babysitter and my mom, so we don't have any experience with the daycare center yet. I spoke to the director and we have a tour next week.
But what about when the kids (2 of them, expect it to happen often, you're lucky if they dont' get sick) get sick, that's a lot of sick days for you/DH to take to stay home with kids that cannot go into daycare.

I think split between me, my DH, and my mom, we have enough back-up for any sick days for both kids. That's 3 people that can take time.

what about an in-home sitter within walking distance of your home?
My DH is completely not comfortable with the idea of small in-home daycare centers.
He likes the idea of a larger, regulated center much better.
If the person is licensed, then they are regulated as well. We have done this with both of my children and had GREAT experiences.
