Re: Abnormal Pap- "Atypical cells"

When I was a teenager I had a bad pap. They did a biopsy and it came out fine. Never had an issue afterwards.
Hope yours turns out to be nothing, GL!

Re: Abnormal Pap- "Atypical cells"

Was it ASCUS?

I had that, turns out it was something called Squamous metaplasia. Just means the cells changed b/c they were inflammed by something, but wasn't any kind of cancer or precancer. Stopped using douche and tampons and now I have only normal paps.

Hope thats all it is for you too.Chat Icon

I'm not sure yet. I have an appointment with a new doc. on Nov. 30th. This is the 2nd time I've had an abnormal pap. Last year they told me I had HPV. When I went in for a follow up they told me that the number of cells that showed up positive weren't enough to cause concern and that was that. This time she specifically told me that it wasn't HPV but it could be an inflammatory issue or precancerous cells. I'm scheduled to see her in Dec. but decided to see another doc in the meantime because I think it's time to find someone new. She also diagnosed me with PCOS in 2008 and never said a single word about it to me since. I just don't feel comfortable with her any more. Chat Icon

Thanks!
I just don't want to be naive. It's bad enough that I didn't ask enough questions in the past. Chat Icon

I am so sorry. It's very annoying, I went through this. Had a couple of Colposcopies over the years and one cryosurgery. Yes, these procedures suck, but its totally controllable and the abnormal/precancerous cells will not turn into cancer! Just stay on top of your paps and make sure you watch it and everything will be just fine. It eventually goes dormant (HPV never goes away, it just goes to sleep, which is what you want it to do).

Other tips:
-smoking is a no- no.... it makes it worse
- if your partner smokes, chemicals from it are in their semen, that is no good either.
-I was told spinach has lots of nutrients that fight it
-stress is also a trigger to wake it up

FM if you want to talk, good luck!

Thanks so much for sharing. I guess I'm just more mad at myself for not changing docs sooner when my reg. gyn just wasn't following up with me. Each time I saw her (once..sometimes twice a year) I felt like it was the first time. It's like she didn't know my history.

Back in 2005 I had a pap that came back with abnormal cells. I had to go back to my GYN for a colposcopy. She also tested for HPV.

I got the results and tested positive for HPV (which I had never heard of back in 2005) and based on what she saw in the colposcopy, she recommended having a LEEP procedure to go in and remove the bad cells. I proceeded to make the appointment for the LEEP (my GYN did it as outpatient in the hospital and I was put under).

Before the procedure I proceeded to get a bit dramatic because maybe I wasn't fully informed, I was worried that she would take too much off my cervix and I would have trouble having kids in the future... I was a mess.

Had the procedure and everything was fine. I actually had to get paps every 6 months after this for about 5 years to make sure that there were no more abnormal cells, but last year I was cleared to only have to go back to yearly paps since I haven't had any abnormal paps since 2005. Chat Icon

I have also had 2 issue-free full term pregnancies since then and have 2 wonderful kids to show for it... so my cervix was just fine! Chat Icon

Feel free to FM me if you have any questions. I am more than happy to share my experiences and knowledge with you. What I can say is that you will be fine. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have had both atypical cells and precancerous cells. I had a biopsy and everything came out fine. This was almost 8 years ago and no issues since.

Thanks sooo much for sharing! I do feel better about the whole thing now. Whatever it is, it's not the worse thing and it won't doom me in any way. I've stopped freaking out about it and now I'm just waiting for my appt. on the 3oth. I'm glad to read all the stories of similar situations that all end well! Thanks again so much! Chat Icon

To give the OP some more support...
A friend of mine had the leep after she had her first child. She went on to have 3 more children, but only thing was they had to put a stich in her cervix during each pregnancy to keep things tight. Each pregnancy was uneventfull.Chat Icon
