Active shooter at high school in Florida

Ugh

A male gunman remains at large after a shooting at a high school in South Florida that may have left 20 to 50 injured and at least one person dead, according to reports.

Officers and medical first responders have swarmed the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, near Fort Lauderdale.

Margate Fire Dept. told the CBS affiliate in Miami that 20 to 50 people might be injured.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Palm Beach County are sending helicopters to help with medical evacuations.

Another day in America! I’ll say what I always say. After we turned our backs on 20 1st graders being murdered nothing will change and days like this will continue to happen. I pray everyday no one I love is ever in one these situations.

Re: Active shooter at high school in Florida

Just a few weeks ago there were 2 school shootings in as many days. One day right after the next.
It's actually more surprising when there is NOT a shooting sadly.

I completely agree. Word for word. Especially that last sentence.

I think cnn just said 18 incidents of guns in schools so far this year. Disgusting and nothing is being done.

Just this morning as I was getting ready to go into dd1's school I had the thought of what I would do should something happen. Would I run to her classroom and most likely be locked out with my toddler or stay in place and not know if dd1 was okay. It's just insanity that these are typical thought processes parents have taking kids to school. How is this where we're at in 2018.

I have been lightly researching some of the demographics of the most recent most public school tragedies, perhaps in some type of foolish way to assure myself that his can’t happen in my district, and it seems like a lot of these events happen in highly ranked districts with predominantly middle/upper middle class residents. This Florida district seems highly ranked with the average income in the area in the 200s range. So anywhere is really at risk, even “good districts” and areas.

Yes. A friend of mine who moved to FL from LI many years ago, lives in the district where this happened. Her son was in the school - and thank god is ok. But it really can happen anywhere and to anyone. Chat Icon

Active shooter at high school in Florida

Parkland, FL was literally named the safest city in Florida last year.

You have someone with mental issues and a gun and it doesn’t matter where or when.

Re: Active shooter at high school in Florida

Reading conflicting stories but one i read was that this student was a known problem. So much so that he wasn’t to have a back pack on him on campus! He had threatened students before. Why was he even in school? Where was security? Wtf is going on. When they aren’t surprised - it’s an added issue. What can you do to keep a known psycho away from the innocent ?

From what I have heard, he was expelled from the school - he should not have been there at all

It was a large school with multiple buildings and outdoor hallways. Many schools in warmer areas are set up this way. I don't know how you begin to keep a campus like that secure.

Still trying to understand the details of the shooter's family but he was orphaned and originally from LI.

Okay, I may be wrong about that. His adoptive parents who both passed away were from LI.

When we moved to NC last year, my son's school was like that. All the buildings were locked, but each building was separate (classrooms, gym, lunchroom, etc). I was surprised they thought that was a safe campus b/c I walked up many times to pick him up and walked around without having issues going from place to place. Thankfully, he's in a different school this year.

He was adopted. His adoptive father died when he was young. His adoptive mother died nov 1, 2017 from the flu. Thanksgiving he moved in with his friend and his family. He had the assault rifle there, locked in a safe. Which they knew about and he purchased legally.

He had been expelled from school. He had made threats about shooting up the school.

Yesterday when it happened, everyone said they knew it would be him.

This is the new normal. Instead of preventing these tragedies we teach our kids to prepare for them. The government will never pass meaningful gun control, they have too much to lose if they legislate against the hand that feeds them.

Legally obtained... exactly why harsher gun laws are needed. This makes my blood boil. Chat Icon

We've had school shootings since 1764. Every decade the shootings increase, and nothing ever gets done. Except for "thoughts and prayers" from the people who actually have the power to make at least attempts at slowing down or decreasing the number of shootings.

As long as the NRA continues to buy politicians, there will never be a chance to stop this....

18th century
During the 18th century there was 1 incident of a shooting during the year 1764

19th century
total
During the 19th century there were 28 shootings:

20th century
total
There were 226 shootings during the 20th century:

21st century
total
From the commencement of the 21st century to the most recently occurring shooting (of February 14, 2018), the number of shootings is 212:

212, and we're less than 20 years into this century!

I was telling DH last night that we need to move back to the city and send DD to NYC public schools where you get wanded before you can enter the building. Those “dangerous” schools are probably the safest of them all.
