There needs to be some type of accountability here. It seems there were multiple chances to prevent this. Noise needs to be made in the form of attack on someone’s $$$. The government? Gun manufacturers? The state? The school district? All of them? We need to start somewhere. This wasn’t just some “sweet boy” that turned evil overnight. Multilevel failure.

39 police calls to his home since 2010 which resulted in visits from the police. For domestic disturbance for a mentally ill person. Domestic assault. A video of him shooting a gun in his backyard. The call into the FBI.
Sign. Sign. Sign. Sign.
YET he was still able to get guns legally!

When the tax reform bill was on the table Congressman Chris Collins from NY actually SAID OUT LOUD that his donors needed him to get it done.

NY is a blue state and the laws here are still ridiculous. You can report someone (who has a permit and a huge rifle collection) for gun threats and they don't do anything. You're literally told there is nothing they can do and to call back when you have proof or when they've actually committed a crime. Law enforcement is just that. They enforce laws, they don't prevent them.


Now that I have a school aged child, I would gladly pay more for armed guards at the schools. Our government doesn't give a f uck about keeping my kid safe. I already pay a ton so DS can go to pre-k in a secure building (compared to the others in this area that anyone can just walk in and walk out). If a school around here offered better security and armed guards, I would pay more. The piece of mind is worth more than the thoughts and prays our government is offering.

Even if we vote out all the republicans, the NRA will find the dems willing to take the money. Every single politician has their price.

So sadly, we need to focus on keeping these sickos out of the schools.
There is not enough security in schools. Not even close to enough.

Time to break out the handy "Mass shooting in US checklist":
1. Send thoughts & prayers but not actually do anything useful?
2. Argue over semantics of the term "assault rifle"?
3. Trolls blame either the Left or the Right?
4. Argue over semantics of the term "terrorist" - if Muslim use it, if Christian use term "mentally ill" ?
5. Media goes berserk until attention is diverted by next horrible story?
6. Congress does nothing but NRA increases donations just in case ?
7. Wait for next one, repeat?

This is exactly what is being done. Nothing. Just pray, argue, and wait for the next one (and pray no one you love is affected by the next one.)

ETA: this person forgot to include the point where some people will bring up the second amendmnent and their right to use these types of weapons for sport. (I guess hunting kindergartners would fall under sport??) and the point where the mantra "guns don't kill people, people kill people" is brought up. Then all bases are covered in this checklist.

We don't want to live in a country where there NEEDS to be armed guards at every public place. Better security is great but it's just a "band-aid" to the problem. The problem is guns are too easily falling into the wrong hands.

I think we need to start be demanding our elected officials pass legislation that makes the requirements for obtaining a weapon more stringent and the SAME across ALL 50 states. It should not be easier to obtain a weapon in one state over another. There should be a strict protocol in place with thorough screening, required classes and training, AND you should have to go through this process and renew every few years. This would eliminate the lunatics who in haste and anger run to a gun shop, purchase a weapon and then react before they've had time to think.

Any LAW ABIDING CITIZEN WITH NO INTENT TO DO HARM should have NO issue going through a lengthy process and wait time to obtain a weapon. Nobody is saying to ban all weapons because that will never happen however, we can do better to ensure that weapons aren't being obtained by the wrong people. Having a mandate across all 50 states is where we need to start, how you obtain a weapon should NOT be left up to the individual states. CLEARLY, that isn't working.

I feel like as a New Yorker, there is not much I can do in regards to getting gun laws changed. New York already has strict gun laws and our representatives are for stricter gun control. It’s the other states, typically red states that vote for politicians that are anti-gun control. Gun owners go out and vote. Nothing will change until a majority of people in the other states go out and vote for someone that is pro-gun control.

Also I'm really shocked that an 18 year old cannot buy alcohol because their brain is not completely developed, causing poor judgement and impulse control, however they can buy a gun.

There WAS a law to make it more difficult for someone with mental illness to get a gun... that was undone about a year ago...
There is a bill going through Congress (it passed the House, and is going through the Senate now) to allow anyone who gets a gun legally in their state to legally carry it to any other state.
That means that if you live in Louisiana, where they don't do background checks, don't regulate assault weapons, don't require gun owners to have a license or register their firearms, and don't allow local governments to regulate firearms, someone with a legal gun could legally come to NY with their unregistered, unlicensed assault weapon....

I said to my husband yesterday morning "it's only a matter of time before every person in America knows someone directly affected by a mass shooting"

Three hours later, my sister called me. She's a teacher in FL. The charter school she works with has a middle school campus near this high school. Some of her colleagues at this middle school - teachers she cross trains with throughout the year - knew some of the kids who were injured and killed, as they had graduated from the middle school and moved on to this high school.

Can someone find data on how many soldiers were killed in war last year and how many kids were killed in school shootings? And the same for this year so far. I feel like we are losing more kids to these shootings than soldier's in the war.

I blame the friggen guardians!! Who the hell in there right mind allows a kid with such aggression to own a ******* ar15?!? I don’t see the government changing, if it hasn’t even attempted to change in all these years, it’s not going to, at least for the foreseeable future. But these people who were his guardians need to be held responsible, and I hope some parents sue the ever loving shit out of them. Maybe then we will have more self responsibility placed on families to actually know what type of people are living in their homes for Christ sake!

What guardians? He was 19 years old. Our lawmakers have made it okay for a 19yo to buy an AR15 and high capacity magazines. Yes, lots of people could have tried to speak up but our laws have made it very difficult to force someone mentally ill to get treatment and have made it very easy for those same people to get guns. That's a huge problem.

Exactly! You can blame the guardians. You can blame his mother. If this family didnt let him live with them he wouldve found someone else. Or lived on the street. Or in his car. Bottom line is he was legally allowed to buy this gun. However he legally couldnt buy himself a beer. That makes a whole lotta sense to some politicians.
