Age for Preschool

How old was your little one when they started preschool? Why did you start sending them and how many days a week did they go?

Re: Age for Preschool

Mine both started the fall they turned three. So they went for two years. DS went 2 days a week for 2 1/2 hours the first year and three days a week same time the next. DD is in 3-days per week now. Since her other two siblings go to school she really wanted to go. She wants to go 5 days next year. She loves it!

My kids have been babysat by their grandparents their whole lives (we both work full time). I wanted them to start socializing with others so pre-school worked out great.

Re: Age for Preschool

Both my kids have early-in-the-year birthdays, so they both were/will be 3 1/2 when they start nursery school. I chose 3 mornings a week for both kids for nursery, followed by 3 full days the next year for pre-K.

I did it for the socialization and introduction to structure-- absolutely not for the academics. There is hardly anything "academic" my children did in nursery or pre-K that I didn't already do with them at home. I already did plenty of crafts, songs, books, with them at home. If my kids had had more opportunities for socialization outside of school I may not have even bothered with nursery, and just enrolled them in a couple weekly activities instead.

Re: Age for Preschool

DS 1 bday is in October, so he started right before he turned 3. He went 3 mornings a week. Then at 4 he attended 5 mornings.
DS 2 has a March bday. I will start him when he's 3.5 at probably the same schedule as DS 1. In the meantime we do music class and I'll probably add something else next year too.

OK, I can see why you sent DS but why did you send DD?

But why did youstart sending them to pre school at the age you did? I mean back when I was younger they didn't.

That isn't really true. I went to preschool when I was 2.5 and I am in my 30's.

I sent my DS at 3.5

All of her friends went and her cousin... plus she has been asking to go to school since she started talking, because she saw her brother go, and i have to say it was the best thing for her.. she LOVES it..

my DD is very very social, and i know if she didnt go she would be bored out of her mind... she loves being around kids...

on the days she doesn't have school we have a playdate or she goes to her Aunts house or grandmas house.

OK, well according to you I should specify that some did ... maybe your parents worked, maybe education was a a HUGE thing for them, maybe you came from money. After talking to two child psychologists around my age (40) I was told that it was not common and that you more likely to come from a wealthy family. Before 3 they also said preschool is a waste of money ... kids that age are not really interested in "other kids" yet. When they reach three this starts so perhaps that is a good time. DS is like some other boys and a little behind. He also has a speech delay. With the higher demands in kindergarten, I will send him. I am having girl in July. If she is not behind I am not sending her until she is 4, just as a primer to the higher demands of kindergarten. Preschools are too expensive. I want to continue to be smart with my money.

Not sure why your psychologist friends would tell you that children under 3 aren't ready to be social because that is not at all true of all kids or even most kids. My son isn't even 3 yet and he enjoys being around other children. He even plays with them (not just parallel play). This is typical of most of his friends. Granted, he goes to daycare 9 am-4 pm Sept-June (I'm a teacher). Seeing all that he has learned (letters, letter sounds, numbers 1-30, his colors, shapes, days of the week) I would say that I think that children before 3 could certainly benefit from school. Their brains are like sponges right now and are constantly taking in and retaining information. Preschool, and the age you send a kid, is a personal decision for any family. I don't think it is just whether education is a HUGE thing or if you are wealthy. There are so many reasons why and when a parent chooses to send their child.

Re: Age for Preschool

DD started at 3, 5 days a week, 2.5 hours. She did that at 3 and 4 yrs. Now her preschool only offers 3 days for 3 yr olds. She was ready for the 5 days and loved it.
