Age Gap Between Your Kids
I"m so happy to see this thread! I'm nowhere near ready to start trying for #2 (My DS is turning 1) and my DH thinks we should have them closer in age (within 3 years apart), mostly because I'm getting older but also because he wants them close in age so they play together. I'm glad to see much bigger age ranges and positive experiences with that larger gap.

Re: Age Gap Between Your Kids
I can't speak from experience as a parent because I have my kids back to back, but my brothers & I are very spread out... one is 6 years older than me & the other is almost 11 years older than me. I never thought much of the age difference growing up, that's just how it was. I loved having their company. And now as adults, my relationship with each of them is something I cannot imagine being without. They're 2 of the people I can really talk to about mostly anything. I don't think a big age gap is a bad thing.

This is the same for me. Im really close with my sister whos 10 years older than me and never thought anything of the age gap growing up. You can have twins who just dont get along and are 2 completely different people so having them close doesnt mean they'll be close.
I have a 1 year old and go back and forth with wanting another now and wanting another in 4 years.

Age Gap Between Your Kids
Thanks everyone! I am one of 5 with 12 years from oldest to youngest and never thought much of the age gap. I'm really close to all my siblings. My DH is one of 3 with a 5 year gap from oldest to youngest and I don't feel like they're particularly close compared to my family. I guess it's just luck of the draw!
I'm still on the fence, but this puts my mind at ease. At this point, I love the "ease" of having 1 and we have a great routine. I'm scared to mess a good thing up.

Age Gap Between Your Kids
My daughter is 12.5 and my son is about to turn 5. It has been pretty great, having a large age gap. My daughter is so helpful with her brother. At this point in time, there is very little jealousy happening. My daughter has her own almost teenage life going, and my son is making his way through the preschool scene. He talks to his big sister about going to kindergarten all the time, asking her questions about school and the bus. They will sit on the couch and just talk. She likes to help him with his preschool homework. And she has no problem with having a Star Wars light saber battle with him while Oovooing with her friends.
While some consider it not ideal, we love our age gap! The only con I can think of is that I have gotten some rather rude questions/comments such as... "wow, such a big age gap! Do they have the same dad?" from a co-worker and "they are so far apart... they must have nothing in common!" from a conversation with a complete stranger at Target. Yes, these are actual comments we've gotten lol.

I really think it depends on the people. I know of adults with siblings 2 years apart and don't have a good relationship, and adults with 4-5+yr age gaps and are extremely close.

I think 5 years apart is fine- the older one will be more independent.

Re: Age Gap Between Your Kids
My age difference between my oldest and youngest is 5 years and I love it.
My oldest is 7 and youngest is almost 2. My older DD is such a big help to me and she is always looking out for her little sister. They play together so nicely and my older DD loves to read her books. It's really very cute!

Re: Age Gap Between Your Kids
My kids have 3 years between them and if I could do it again I would have probably spaced it out at least 5 years. DS was still so dependent on me when his sister was born and I still feel like I don't give my DD the same attention I gave my son.
FWIW DH and my BIL are 6 years apart and have always been very close.
