Am I crazy for going on a cruise this year...

We booked a cruise this year for July and DS will be 13 months old. A lot of people have said we are crazy to do this because DS will be 13 months old and he may be just learning how to walk so it's going to be soooooooo hard on us. I understand that but what am I gonna do? Not take my son on a vacation?

My MIL is coming with us...

I would definitly go. I think for some reason dont understand why you should take a baby on vacation. I think its a great expereince for you and the baby.

Did you mean that you don't understand why you "should" or "shouldn't" take a baby on vacation with you.

We love cruises and want him to experience the same thing. We are going to Bermuda and Bahamas. We've been to both places before. It's mostly going to be us being on the beach and I thinik it's going to be a great experience being on a beautiful beach with our son.

No doubt it's going to be hard, I totally understand that but on the other hand. I can't avoid vacations because I have a toddler. Besides having my MIL there will be a big help. That's not the reason she is coming with us and we are certainly not going to take advantage of her by having her babysit all the time. We are not even going to ask her to do it but she is the type that will offer to do it so DH and I can have some alone moments. In fact she has already said it.

We are going on a cruise in July, DD will be 17 months old, not our first choice of vacations but it's my FIL's 70th bday and he is taking the family.
I would have preferred a beach resort type place but I can't look a gift horse in the mouthChat Icon

Where is the cruise going to? Depends on the locations. Where we're going are beach locations...

we brought brendan on a cruise with us in october when he was 6 months old. my MIL and FIL came with us, but we ended up pretty much just doing everything together. it worked out fine and brendan was really good, but i have to say it was the least relaxing vacation i have ever been on. it wasn't a bad vacation, it's just much different when you have to be taking care of a baby the whole time, know what i mean? i would still definitely do it again though.

I don't think you're crazy at all. We're taking DS to the Dominican Republic in May (he'll be 11 months) for my sister's wedding...then to Disney in October (he'll be 16 months). I'm not worried about either trip.

Sorry Chat Icon , I meant to say that for some reason some people (usually older generation) dont understand why you would/should take a baby on a vacation. I really dont see anything wrong with it.

I think that taking baby and taking MIL are two things that may make for a very DIFFERENT vacation. Chat Icon Chat Icon
dont say we didnt warn you. Chat Icon

Im sure you'll still have fun.. I just think cruises are not very kid friendly (until they reach the age for the kids camps). you wont even be able to put him in the pools (from what Ive heard, no diapers in the pools). yes, you have the beaches, (near the ocean with a one year old, how relaxing Chat Icon Chat Icon but hopefully the ships have things for babies to have fun with. and im dying to go on a cruise too... Chat Icon

you'll make the best of it Im sure! Chat Icon

I have never been on a cruise, but I would definitely take Jordana on any vacation planned. We took Jordana to California at 5 months, are planning on going to Florida this month (9 months old) and Israel any time when she is 10-12 months old.

I don't see why you wouldn't do the same on a cruise. Is a cruise that rocky that a child can't walk on it? Chat Icon I have never been on a cruise so I don't know- but I would assume not.

I don't think your crazy at all - the reason anyone would think you're crazy is because they are probably jealous they aren't going themselves!

Enjoy it - it will be a nice experience for you all and your son will be 13 months and understanding more and more.
PLUS - im sure MIL will be able to help you out alot.

Re: Am I crazy for going on a cruise this year...

I would be an idiot if I said I expect to be sitting by the pool area sipping pina coladas all day long listening to the band playing.

Toddlers will be toddlers no matter where you take them and no matter where you are you will always be chasing after them. I see what my brother is going through. My brother and his wife are taking my nephew who will be 17 months old in February to Italy. What's there to do on a plane for a 17 month old? Let me tell you this kid does not like to sit still for a minute! But they are still going.

And he wasn't even a toddler yet and it was still least relaxing for you. It's always going to be like that.

I don't expect to be laying out in the sun all day...

I expect it to be rough but we are still going because it's still our first family vacation and whatever happens we gotta make the best of it.

Re: Am I crazy for going on a cruise this year...

I don't think you are crazy, but I am sure it will be less relaxing than normal. We took a cruise to Bermuda a few yrs ago... it is a nice cruise....beaches in Bermuda are wonderful. We loved Horseshoe Bay and the beaches by St Georges! It will obviously be more work for you and DH, but in the end if it doesn't bother you, why should it bother anyone else?

We are taking a vacation to Hilton Head in August of this yr. By DD will 17 mos by then. It is a family reunion with my husband's grandfather's 80th bday capping it off. Hopefully we will have help, since all of the family will be there but I don't expect it either and I am sure I wont be laying by the pool or beach all day either but we are still going!

I don't expect it to be relaxing at all. What family vacation is? LOL But i'm sure there will be some fun moments.

Bermuda is beautiful. We went there on our honeymoon. Horseshoe Bay was our favorite. We plan on going back there. Chat Icon
