Am I doing this wrong???
Today, my genius husband used the last bottle of milk without informing me. I could have sworn that there was another gallon in the downstairs 'fridge. I went to get it before DS (2 1/2) naptime, and it wasn't there. So I gave him the 2 inches of milk left int he house. He threw a 30 minute fit for more milk. When I was telling my mother this, she said - "so he is still on bottles then". I said no, he gets a sippy. She said if he needs a cup of any form upon waking up and/or sleeping then it is the same as being on bottles, and that I am wrong and shouldn't allow it.
Am I doing something wrong by my son here? Is it bad i give him a cup when he wakes up, before nap, and before bed? If so why, and how can I change it to not freak him out???

Re: Am I doing this wrong???
Ok, I'm a first time mom, but I don't get what the big deal is???
I know a lot of moms that post their baby's schedule and lots of infant moms post totally different things - some babies get a bottle right when waking and before bed. Some get them an hour or two later or before bed. What's so wrong about him getting a sippy when he gets up, before nap, and before bed? I guess she thinks he shouldn't be "dependent" on it?
DS still takes a sippy of milk before bed. I always offer it then since I feel that he will be sleeping for 10-12 hours and I don't want him to wake up starving or early because he's hungry etc. Sometimes he drinks it, sometimes he doesn't.

Re: Am I doing this wrong???
I have no idea why that would be wrong.
DS gets a sippy a little while after waking up and he still gets a bottle before bed. I will be transitioning to a cup before bed, as hes on cups all day now.
but really..they're hungry when they get up and its comforting when they go to sleep.

NO- nothing wrong! I do the same exact thing I give sippy cups
Only thing, you want to stick to less than about 18oz a day, they really don't need more than that. Any more might interfere with iron absorption. That's all I could dig up.

Re: Am I doing this wrong???
ds who is 19 months old still gets a cup of milk upon waking up & usually takes another one about 30-40 minutes prior to bed....I don't consider this "bottle" or anything similar. I think it is just something he got use to over time

Re: Am I doing this wrong???
I don't think there is anything wrong with it at all. Then again, Zoe and Reilly are still taking bottles every day. Honestly, who cares if it is a routine and he likes it? He needs 2 cups of dairy per day- whether it be from milk, cheese, yogurt etc. If he likes his milk, I think that is a great thing, not something I would discourage!

Re: Am I doing this wrong???
Well, he should really only be drinking about 2 cups of milk per day. But if that is all he is getting, I do not think it matters when he gets it.

Re: Am I doing this wrong???
Nope - there is nothing wrong with that at all. Jack was a milk addict. I literally weaned him from sippy cups of milk around the age of three - just because it was getting crazy expensive (and we started potty training him)
It's comfort for them - and it's totally fine!

Re: Am I doing this wrong???
I see nothing wrong with what you are doing, I do the same and my DS is 18 months. Add to that that I still give him bottles! If he doesn't get a before nap bottle he doesn't complain or have trouble falling asleep but I find that he naps much better if his tummy has had some milk. He loves his bottle, it's his one vice so I give it to him for now.
I wouldn't change it if I were you, you know your child best.

Re: Am I doing this wrong???
D, I do see what your mom was getting at - its not how he takes the milk, its that he threw a fit when he didn't get. IMO, that's part toddler issue and part reliance on that milk. I think she was just comparing it that way.
That being said she is not his mom and has no right to pass judgment on what you do. Who cares if he loves it and relies on it? Its milk, not crack. Its healthy!
Luca still HAS to sleep with his loveys. He sucks on them and they are gross. IMO its the same as if he still used a paci and I have no intention of taking them away anytime soon.

Re: Am I doing this wrong???
The reason they want them weened off bottles is because it's bad for their teeth. DS insists on having his sippy with milk upon waking up. I don't know about you but I'm thirsty when I wake up too. Ped prefers he has milk over juice anyway.

Re: Am I doing this wrong???
My 3.5 yr old gets a cup upon waking (morning and nap). His ped GI who is insanely strict about EVERYTHING even said "We all have some comfort habits. It's fine." I don't see the harm at all

Thank you all. Her issue was that he "depends" on it. I didn't see the big deal. Glad i am not nuts and this is just more of her judgmental criticism of me That I have learned to handle over the last 30 yrs).

Milk is very healthy, but the only reason that I know of to limit it is because it hinders iron consumption. My son was anemic when he was a toddler...attributed to drinking too much milk. Especially with a meal such as red meat or cereal where you want him to get his iron.

Re: Am I doing this wrong???
We give DS a sippy of milk when he wakes up. I consider it part of breakfast, just like you have your coffee.
He also gets milk with lunch and dinner. He gets between 16 and 24 oz a day, which his ped said is perfect for his age (16 months).

Re: Am I doing this wrong???
i don't get it - When I get up in the morning, I need a drink - I'm certainly not 'on a bottle' at 32 years old ..........
If he's drinking from a sippy cup, he's not 'on the bottle' - My son would prefer to wake up at his own pace, chill, and drink a cup of milk every morning, unfortunately, for him, he also wants to sleep as long as possible before going to daycare -
But on the weekends this is what he does.
And he usually has a cup of milk before bed too ........
He doens't freak out w/o it, but it's kind of part of his 'routine' .............
