An evening at the ER --- I'll now probably contend for worst mommy of the year! UPDATED: SPOKE TO DAYCARE
I went to get DS into his carseat this morning. It's actually a hard maneuver b/c I'm short, the sides of the recaro seat are high, and he sits in the middle of the SUV. So I hoisted him up into the seat. At which point he starts to cry. He's been starting to give me a hard time getting into the seat lately so I didn't think anything of it. He calmed after a minute and then looked really tired.
I drop him off at daycare. He cried again. Very normal for us...he hates dropoff.
DH picks him up at 5pm and they tell him that he was acting very strange today. Mopey. Sleepy. Didn't want to play like normal. Cried on the playground.
I get home at 5:30 and within a minute I notice he's not using his left arm - AT ALL!!! He's not crying in pain or anything. Just not using it. I immediately knew that it must have been me that did this to him putting him in the carseat.
I freak out! Guilt pours in. Hysterics ensue.
Get stuff together to go to the ER and head out. They tried to "pop" it in figuring it was nursemaid's elbow but couldn't get it to go. So we had to do xrays at which point I lose it because here I am thinking my baby broke his elbow. And then I started to think they were going to call CPS on me. Awful. Xrays came back fine. They tried again to pop it and then got it to click.
So it was nursemaid's elbow. I guess kind of common for toddlers. Within a few minutes of him popping it back in matthew was jumping around the hospital bed and bouncing all around. They just told us that he is susceptible to it now so be careufl with pulling his arms.
He's fast asleep now. I still feel very guilty about it. I mean, he was in daycare ALL DAY like this! He must have been in agony. And I can't help but wonder how did they not notice he wasn't using his left arm at all. He couldn't get around without it because he doesn't walk yet and he certainly couldn't crawl without the arm. And yet I didn't notice at dropoff either.
***sigh*** I can't believe myself!

NOT your fault. Shame on the daycare teacher for not noticing that he was not using his arm!

Please don't beat yourself about it at all... It soooooo happens!
But what they said is very very true about it happening again. Be oh so careful....
My sister had this happen when she was a toddler, and I can't tell you how many times it happened over and over again....

Oh, no! Poor Matthew
I am just so glad that mommy instinct took over and you were able to get it fixed. A bad mommy wouldn't have done anything about it, you got it fixed as soon as you noticed! You are an amazing mommy, don't you dare beat yourself up over this

awww poor baby. It's not your fault. I was actually in the ER last week with my DD for the same exact thing(hers didn't happen in the carseat), but the elbow. I too was petrified!

I agree with the others - it is not your fault AT ALL! There are so many things that are out of our control. Getting Jack into the carseat is a real struggle also - he is so heavy and I just don't have the strength to lift him up all the time (I'm also really short) -- don't blame yourself - you did the right thing and got it taken care of!

You poor thing. I know EXACTLY how you feel. This happened to me with my little guy a few weeks ago and I felt horrible too. Now I'm always worried about it happening again. Luckily, it was only Nursemaid's Elbow and your DS is fine now. Don't punish yourself over it. It could've happened to anyone (believe me I know).

Same thing happened to my brother.
My brother was holding my 2 year old nephews hand and the baby had a tantrum and threw himself to the floor- while my brother was still holding his hand.
His elbow popped out too. The hospital popped it right back in. My brother was sick about it for days.
The Doctor said it happens all of the time- don't feel soo bad!

Glad he's ok!! We had to take Julia to the ER for the same thing last year, we got home from being away and my DH went to change her diaper and she went to run away from him and DH grabbed her arm and that's when it came out of the socket, she screamed her head off we didn't know what was wrong till I saw she wasn't using her right arm..
Happends to kids all the time!

Re: An evening at the ER --- I'll now probably contend for worst mommy of the year!
Thanks so much everyone!
I can't help but feel so bad about it. OK, it could have happened to anyone. I almost would have felt less bad if he was throwing a tantrum and his elbow popped out. But it happened because I think I just handled him wrong. He was completely innocent.
I could beat myself up for days about that and never get anywhere.
But, the part that makes me feel even worse is that I sent him to daycare for the ENTIRE day like this. If I was home with him I would have caught it right away! And saved him 10 hours of pain.
I think the guilt got to a peak when they ordered the x-ray because they thought it might be broken or fractured. That's when I completely lost it and my little guy was trying to comfort me from crying by stroking my hair and kissing me. And that made it all worse! Thank goodness the xrays were fine.
They assured me that he wouldn't remember anything in the morning. At which point I asked them if I would be lucky enough not to remember it in the morning either.
