Thanks so much everyone!

I can't help but feel so bad about it. OK, it could have happened to anyone. I almost would have felt better if he was throwing a tantrum and his elbow popped out. But it happened because I think I just handled him wrong.

I could beat myself up for days about that and never get anywhere.

But, the part that makes me feel even worse is that I sent him to daycare for the ENTIRE day like this. If I was home with him I would have caught it right away! And saved him 10 hours of pain.

I think the guilt got to a peak when they ordered the x-ray because they thought it might be broken or fractured. That's when I completely lost it and my little guy was trying to comfort me from crying by stroking my hair and kissing me. And that made it all worse! Thank goodness the xrays were fine.

They assured me that he wouldn't remember anything in the morning. At which point I asked them if I would be lucky enough not to remember it in the morning either. Chat Icon

I would feel the same way, I know it, I just hope it gets out of yoru memory fast!

I know at least four other parents this happened to. Don't feel bad - it happens very easily!

I know it's common. It happened to my BFF's daughter a few months ago and I remember reading at least 2 stories on these boards about this happening too.

When you see your own child with an immobile arm it still is hard not to turn into a complete lunatic. I'm not good in a panic!

Im sorry that he experienced discomfort and that you felt guilt. I think we have all gone through the feeling when something happens to our kids that we think we could have prevented. I know I have had two such incidents recently and I cried about it too.Chat Icon

NOT your fault. Shame on the daycare teacher for not noticing that he was not using his arm!

I agree!!!! They didn't call you to let you know he was acting differently? Look, we sprained Cailen's ankle taking him down the slide - things happen! You are not a bad mommy!!!!! Chat Icon

No, they didn't call at all. They did say they were checking him for fever (which he didn't have) all day because he does have a cold so they figured it had to do with that. His teacher did tell DH that she knew something was wrong because he wasn't acting himself all day. I'm going to find out more this morning when I drop him off and talk to them about it. I can't wrap my hands around it either.

Aw Lisa, you are the farthest thing from a bad mommy! Remember how much you love your Matthew and would go to the ends of the earth for him. This was an accident and he is fine!

I am sure you have breathed many sighs of relief and I hope you were able to sleep last night!

This is very very common. It happens to my niece all the time. My brother and SIL actually were taught how to put it back themselves. They eventually outgrow it, but you need to be careful in the meantime.

These things happen unfortunately!

If it makes you feel any better, I had a broken arm in 2 places at around 4 or 5 yrs old - for 2 wks before my mom took me to a doctor Chat Icon

Re: An evening at the ER --- I'll now probably contend for worst mommy of the year!

I just went through this with my dd about two weeks ago. She fell on her elbow and for about two hours I was trying to get her to move it around and lift it. She screamed only when you touched it. Eventually I called my ped. and they told me to take her to PM Pediatrics. It's an on-call 24 hour doctor's office just for infants/kids. My dd was seen right away, no waiting. I was dreading going to the hospital and paying the outrageous co-pay and waiting for hours in the ER.
they had to pop it back in and took some x-rays.
I will have to look up the address again because I advise anyone who's child gets sick or injured and your doctor's office isn't open you should def. go there instead of a regular hospital.
The doctor was really nice and the office was very kid friendly.

Sorry I know I got off the subject a little..
What I really wanted to say is that is VERY common in toddlers, and the doctor told me most times it's from the mother's yanking the arms of their kids to keep them out of danger.
I find myself now pulling dd under the armpits if I want her to come closer to me.
I would speak to the daycare though because they def. should have called you. They had to notice, I mean it did take me two hours but eventually you know there had to be something wrong.

That is terrible, but don't beat yourself up, at this age it is so hard to know what is going on all the time because they can't communicate that well. Just be thankful you realized and got him the help he neededChat Icon

My daughter had nursemaid elbow last month! Both kiddies were playing on our bed and Benjamin was getting a little rough and they were rolling to close to the edge so I quickly grabbed her arm and that's what caused it!!

We were in an emergency room 15 minutes later and it took all of 20 seconds to fix her! Apparently, this is very common and I can't believe the day care didn't notice him not using him arm all day!
