I agree with everyone else. It's obvious to me that Jack is doing amazingly well. I don't like that woman's comment either - so if your DH wasn't in the district they would not have offered the placement to him? That, to me, means he doesn't really need it and they thought you would be kissing their arses to get it Chat Icon Chat Icon

Good for you for being Jack's best advocate! Chat Icon

I would of done the same thing because I believe kids learn from each other. If Jack is the smartest in the specal ed class...he isn't "learning" from any of the other kids. I would rather my child "try" the regular class and if he is having a difficult time keeping up with the other kids then I would look at options.

This is my thing, I spoke to his teachers at the nursery school before the meeting to get a feel for how he is in class. They told me how great he does, and that they have no issues at all, and that he keeps up with all of the other kids. If they said to me "He is falling behind, or he needs additional assistance" I would look into that - but since he is right there with the other kids, I wouldn't dream of taking him out.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words! This has been a very tough weekend and we have really been trying to weigh all of our options and do what is truly best for him. I'm glad that I'm not alone in my decision and that others would have done the same thing! Chat Icon

you totally made the right choice and I appalled how the woman reacted to you, how unprofessional. As a teacher myself who has sat in on CPSE's, we know that we can suggest things but must be open to parent's opinions and input too!Chat Icon

I totally agree with you! You have to be your advocate for your son! You know him better then anyone else & like you said, they just caught him on a day that he didnt' want to "cooperate" which doesn't mean he can't do it.

D...YOU are Jacks BEST advocate. You really are! Dont second guess yor decision. Your "gut" feeling and his teachers "approval" is ALL you need. If I was you...I would be confident in my decision.

Re: An update from Jack's CPSE meeting, and a WWYD? LONG warning!

Was the special ed preschool placement based soley on his test scores bc if that is the case this is ridiculous. They should be observing and evaluating him in his everyday social settings (preschool, home) before making a placement decision like this.

Either way, I'm surprised they placed him in this type of setting based on a speech delay. So many children have speech delays/issues and they are able to completely overcome them with some EI and speech therapy a few times a week. Also, I have seen so many children pushed in the wrong direction when it comes to special ed and services. (ususally a lack of services to tell you the truth)

I personally would go with my mommy instinct bc It seems like your whole team (teacher, speech teacher, husband) are all on the same page and it is the people that do not even know your son that want to place him in a more restrictive environment. Don't get me wrong, a special ed setting is the absolute best for many children...but from what you and your teachers have observed...not yours! Since he is in a reg. setting now and is progressing and doing fine I think that is how he should continue. I also think that with any child including yours..he should be re-evaluated on a regular basis so you could take advantage of more services if needed Chat Icon But..honestly, he sounds like he is doing so wonderful and if it were me I would have made the same decision as youChat Icon

I would've done the same thing you did. My friend's district tried doing something similar to her and her son and like you, she refused to send her son to a special ed school. He is doing amazing at his regular school. I remember her telling me how much they tried to push it and how they were not happy with her either.

I would have made the same decision you did.

Are they offering you this because your DH works in the district? Would they NOT offer it otherwise? If so, then I take it to mean Jack doesn't really NEED special ed. anyway. Please correct me if I misinterpreted that.

They really didn't give much of an explanation. They just said "We will place him in a special ed nursery school also" The woman from the agency and his therapist all claimed this was a gift since DH works in the district and they've never seen it offered before for a child just with a speech delay. They said normally parents have to fight to get it for their kids.

THis woman gets me so angryChat Icon Yeah..this is the prob..parents who's children really need special ed do have to fight to get it and the ones who do not need it are offered itChat IconChat Icon I would have been so angry too. Why would you be thankful that she wanted to put your child in special ed even though she said herself he only has a speech delay. THis is also sad bc that could possibly be taking up the spot for someone who really needs it...ONCE AGAIN..you def made the right decision and are an awesome advocate for you childChat Icon

Didn't they offer you an Integrated Class? If so, then it is a gift.

DD received Speech and OT for eating issues. I was pg at the time of her meeting, and I was exhausted between working and bringing her to her therapies. I ASKED for a pre-school program.

I think it was wonderful! I liked the fact that her therapy and school were in the same place, and that everyone was on the same page.

She had typical children and children with different disabilities in her classroom. They had only about 12 kids with 2 teachers and 2 aids.

She was in a "regular" church pre-school before this, I let her finish the year and then start in the new school in the intergrated classroom.

She is now 5, reads, writes and is flourishing in her regular- ed kindergarten classroom. She gets no services.

I think that the Intergrated Classes get a bum rap and that is from people who don't truly understand what they are all about.

I would suggest that you go and take a tour and see all that it has to offer. You may feel differently. What really sealed the deal for me, was that DD would get her services in school. So that would mean that she wouldn't have to attend school, and then come home and have to go to therapy. I wanted her to have a little free time to be a kid in the afternoons.

Good Luck.

That is exactly what I said to DH. I told him that we could possibly be taking a childs spot who really needs it.

Also, when they brought up the spec ed school and I said No, I asked if they think he would benefit from having a Seit come to his nursery school. They said no since his teachers say he is doing great there.....so whyyyy would I need to take him out then? It made zero sense to me!

My DH teaches an integrated class so he is really all for it, and knows the benefits. We just don't think it's the right fit for our son.

Also, his school is only 2.5 hours so his therapies don't take away from his social actitivty. The kid has more of a social life than Paris Hilton! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thank you for your feedback though, and I'm glad to hear that your DD is doing so wonderfullyl! Chat Icon

Because I think it's cheaper for the district to put him in a special ed preschool than it is to provide SEIT services for him.

I have a son who gets EI services as well, but more than your son. I am early in the process of transitioning him, but from what I have heard so far, the districts tend to want to drop any additional services if they think they can be provided for at the preschool. Without going into a lot of detail, I am afraid I am going to have a fight on my hands, because I have been warned that what the district is likely to offer is not what *I* want for my DS. You are Jack's best advocate, you should do what you think would benefit him most.

Yes..sadly a lot of it boils down to the good old $$$$..like a business. That is why it is so important for parents to become educated and advocate. I would like to think that the edu system is always in the child's best interest but it's notChat Icon

Diana, you and James made the best decision as parents for Jack. IMHO I would have done the same thing if Jack was my child. I agree with him being challenged rather than the highest functioning in the class.

First, Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon . You guys ALWAYS do what's best for him...period!

Next-- definitely sounds like he wasn't into the evaluation that day, as you said....sounds boring to me too, and if they're not in the mood at that time, how in the world can they think that's an accurate assessment? Chat Icon Chat Icon

Then-- if he WASN'T in a preschool already (or if he was but wasn't thriving like he is!) then I'd be all for the integrated program...and you say James knows the program and would be for it too. Fine, it would be great for him. But there is NO WAY I would personally move him from his current school since he is THRIVING there.

Re: An update from Jack's CPSE meeting, and a WWYD? LONG warning!

I'm a special ed teacher so I'm looking at this through different eyes than you. I see this offer of a special ed class as a gift as well if it's an integrated class. Here's why: Integrated classes are a mix of special ed and general ed kids. If your child receives speech/language services, then he's considered special ed. It's not a bad thing. He would be with peers just as any other child who's not in special ed would be. The difference is that he would have the benefit of additional support (special ed teacher and a TA) PLUS would receive speech in and/or out of the classroom. Personally, if he can receive it IN the classroom, it's much better for him than being pulled out. Just something to consider. But really, if your child is receiving speech services, he is special ed and I wouldn't hide from that or fear that title. It has nothing to do with his intelligence at all. HTH!

from my post above you can see that I'm pro-integrated classrooms and really believe that for MY son it will probably be a godsend.

Your point is a very valid one and I do think the label does sting a little and causes parents to make the wrong decision in terms of that fear of labeling. It's a shame really. I don't think Diana was saying that she doesn't want her child to be labeled special ed...it's moreso that she is not confident that her child will continue to thrive in this type of setting.
