this may have been asked before sorry... but
how can they "call" or predict a winner in a state with such a small number of precincts reporting I've seen as low as 1-8% and they will call a winner in that state??
'plain me pls. LOL
This question has been answered like 10 times tonight, you may just want to look back on here.
whelp, I've just skimmed through about half of the 8 pages so far and see where its been asked about 4x but not answered... oh well.

That's what I said two pages ago It is completely non-sensical!
they do it every time
They explained it on CNN. Basically they compare exit polls and other polls done before hand to the actual results as they start to come in. In states like NY where there is no debate over who will carry the state, they will declare a winner once making sure the numbers match up. They will not call any battleground states until more numbers come in.

Ophelia explained it nicely. In states that are 'traditionally' one way or the other, they rely on history and exit polls.

I think CNN is being very careful because I think they had issues with a couple of elections with wrong projections.
