Another FIOS VS. Cable question
I am moving to an area that has both and I am up in the air about which to choose.
Both are giving me basically the same price (FIOS is 2-year deal and cable is 1-year deal). Only difference I am concerned about is the phone with cable, if the power goes out you have no phone and with FIOS you will. We are getting an alarm system, so that is my concern with that.
Also, someone told me with FIOS your electric bill goes up and the installation can take a VERY long time
Would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks

Re: Another FIOS VS. Cable question
The installation for FIOS can take all day. I never heard anything about the electirc bill going up, that doesn't really make sense. My parents have it and are very happy. My DH is waiting with bated breath for the moment verizon gets permission for tv in our town.

Re: Another FIOS VS. Cable question
We have Fios and really like it. The installation took a few hours but our house was already set up for wireless so I think that is why it took less time than other ppl. Orginally told me it would take 8 hours
i wasnt worried about the power going out and losing phone bc we both have cells. We have an alarm system and didnt have any problem in that area either.

Re: Another FIOS VS. Cable question
FIOS has battery backup, so if you lose power for more than 8 hours, you lose that too. The only way you'll always have a phone line is through land-line phone.

Re: Another FIOS VS. Cable question
The only reason our FiOS took about 5 hours is because the outside line guys didn't run the wire to the house. That was supposed to have been done the week before. He spent several hours just waiting. I think he spent about 2-3 hours of actual work. I was also set up for wireless, so he just unplugged my DSL box, and plugged the FiOS box in.

Thank you
It's funny, the more options we have the harder it is to decide

Re: Another FIOS VS. Cable question
Does HD channels mean anything to you Bari? If so Cablevision has the most right now "41" while Fios has around 25. Fios has the potential to have the most because they have the fiber optic cables while Cablevision does not.

Never thought about that. We don't have an HD TV now, but that is one of the first big purchases when we get into the home we plan on doing.
Thanks

Re: Another FIOS VS. Cable question
Our electric has not gone up with FIOS... and your phone still goes down if there is a power loss. I think you get 1/2hr of battery backup.

My cousin works for Verizon and installs FiOS. He told me you get at least 8 hours of battery back up.

Re: Another FIOS VS. Cable question
Family members work for Verizon have told me that you can expect installation to get quicker as more areas are wired for the service. battery backup is 8 hours and electric bill increase should be minimal as that it is a low volt wire that is connected to the system.
