Another flu shot question - SAHMs do you/will you get the flu shot for your DC?

I am so upset and torn right now. I have an appt tomorrow for DD to get a flu shot and am debating on cancelling it.

DH gets the flu shot (due to asthma). I don't get it b/c the one year I actually did get it, I literally was sick for about 2 mths, feverish, felt ill, horrible, etc. I KNOW it was a reaction to the shot, just know it. So I don't get it.

So I have until tomorrow am to decide whether to get this for DD. I am a SAHM, I don't go to playgroups, and limit my DDs exposures to crowds, etc. So that part of me says no, don't get it for her. But unfortunately I have a stubborn family that finds reasons to dispute the concept of frequent hand washing around children (they think I am being overly neurotic) and to me they pose the biggest risk to her. But is that a good enough reason to get it, when they only see her like 2 times a month?

So what do you SAHMs do??? Plan on doing? The clock is ticking, I have to decide. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm not a SAHM..but I would get it for my child even if I was. Does your DH work outside the home? Also, with holidays coming up DC will be around a lot of people. I know I hate the idea of so many shots!

My babies got it. And I will be getting it too.
I may be a WAHM, but we go out to the mall, to stores, to the library, to friends' houses with children, etc.
DH works in the city, is on the train, etc.

Just because they are not in day care does not mean they won't be exposed to the flu.

I agree. I'll be WAHM and my mom will be minding DS when I have to go in the office, but I still think he could get it anywhere--the mall, stores, library. I've gotten the flu shot for I think 20 years now and never had a reaction (other than a sore arm). Last year when PG I got the shot and still got the flu, but my doctor said if I had gotten a worse version I would have been hospitalized. Any minor side effects to me are worth saving DS from that.

I am home on maternity leave...but my 2 y/o will be getting it. While we don't go out often (have a 9 wk old), my DH works outside the home and is in contact with many ppl on a daily basis.

Re: Another flu shot question - SAHMs do you/will you get the flu shot for your DC?

I am in the same position you are...I'm a SAHM and DS does not go to any classes or anything like that, but I did want to start swin classes and/or Mommy & Me classes. Also, my mom is a teacher, and DH is in a high contact with the public job, so I am torn on what to do.

I *think* what I will do is ask my ped. if the shot is the thimerisol free one...if it is, I will give it to DS. But then again, I change my mind every 5 minutes, so I don't know.

I am a WAHM mom and my DD gets it every year. Her ped offers the thimerosol free one and I strongly believe in the vaccine. The flu can ber very dangerous to small children. I now also have a 7 week old DS so it was especially important for me this year that we all get vaccinated. DD has already gotten hers (2 weeks ago and absolutely no reaction).

I don't think so. Maybe DH and I will get it, but probably not the baby

We did last year and this year. This year for sure because we are going to be involved in a bunch of activities over the winter with other kids at the library. Last year, we barely left the house but I felt safer getting it for him because the flu is not fun for anyone and is unsafe for babies. I was so nervous about all these shots too but some, like the flu shot, I wasnt too worried about.

we are debating this and will see what my ob and ped both say... dh works in a very public job but i mostly stay home... however if ds gets the flu it puts me at risk with baby #2... i really would prefer not to get it for him since i am allergic... we will see...

Re: Another flu shot question - SAHMs do you/will you get the flu shot for your DC?

I am a SAHM and DS will be getting it. First off we do playdates, gymnastics, he has school aged cousins we see often and DH works in an office.

Last year I was a working PT and I got it for DS . Well DH came home with a bad case of the flu (he didnt get the shot last year) and although DS was in the same house as him he didnt get it!

Also when DS gets sick it goes right to his chest and he has breathing issues so I wont take the chance.

DS will get the regular flu shot--I'm still a bit mixed on swine flu. I'm a SAHM, but we do have playdates, go to the library, and take some classes and go shopping, so he gets exposed. And DH and I will both get it also, but we have compromised immune systems.

Re: Another flu shot question - SAHMs do you/will you get the flu shot for your DC?

Well I see alot of SAHMs will still get it for their DC due to playgroups, etc.

My line if thinking is this though...

I still have to be vigilant and cautious re the swine flu, b/c I highly doubt I would get DD that vaccine.

So to me, I don't think I will feel comfortable doing group setting things/higher risk things with my DC anyway, due to this....

I guess my point is, if the Swine flu didn't exist, I would more likely get it for DD. But since I won't get the Swine flu shot, I still can't rest easy this upcoming season....so why get another vaccine for a disease that is transmitted the same way, when I will be being extra cautious anyway.

Am I making sense? Anyone think like this?

You are making sense. I guess the problem isn't just playgroups though, DH, you or DC could get exposed anywhere. I know I am a little more concerned about what DH brings home with him after riding on the subway, LIRR, being stuck in an office with sick coworkers, etc. than what DS will pick up at the library or a playgroup (though they can be germy to be sure).

So even if we did no playgroups, I would still consider getting DS the flu shot because of these things and the possibility of picking stuff up other places, like the grocery store.

DH and I also have immune system issues, so it's best that we all avoid getting the flu if possible, so that's another concern which isn't relevant for you.

I work very very PT so I consider myself a SAHM for the most part. I do get DD the flu shot because she has asthma, as do I. Also, she is starting preschool this yr and will be around a lot more germs. She has had it the past 2 yrs and never had a reactioin etc.
