Another pastina question (and some other general pasta questions as well)
How does the child eat the pastina? Do you feed it to them? Put some on the tray and them them self-feed?
Does pastina have eggs in it? (James is allergic)
What other types of pasta can they have at this age - 9 months? Can I cut up some rotini for him to pick up? What about shells and cheese (organic) - can they have that at this age?

Re: Another pastina question (and some other general pasta questions as well)
I boil pastina in chicken broth and feed it to DD with a spoon. She's not the self-feeding type. Earth's Best pastina does not have egg in it but there's a warning on the box saying it's produced in a facility that does peanuts and tree nuts. Personally, I'm not crazy about EB's pastina (comes out too gritty for some reason) so I give DD regular pastina. I bought a generic box of pastina from a supermarket when I went home to Boston and this one does have egg yolk listed as an ingredient. I'm not sure of the other company's pastina off the top of my head.
You can definitely do other types of pasta if you think he's ready. DS used to love picking up small shells and eating them!

I have been giving Ezra, whole wheat elbow pasta. I just cut it in half and he eats it as finger food.

Thank you! There's a box of pastina in the pantry, but I'm too lazy right now to get up and check out the ingredients.
He loves to feed himself, so I think he'll enjoy the pasta!

I have been giving it to him plain. It's easier for him to pick up if it's not coated in butter or anything. I personally like whole wheat pasta plain anyway.

I'm sure he will! My kids also like it boiled and mixed with a pat of butter. And when DS was old enough to handle tomatoes, he loved marinara sauce and ground beef in it!

I love Barilla's new Piccolini Minis....They basically are a tiny version of the regular sized pastas ( penne, shells, farfalle etc...)
Also the mini shells by Ronzoni are a perfect size for my DD...Not sure if they have egg though...He will probably be ready for those soon

Re: Another pastina question (and some other general pasta questions as well)
My personal opinion... try pastina once, to say you did... It's a mess! You'll be picking tiny hard stars out of the highchair seams for weeks! After our one pastina trial (spoon fed, leading to self feeding) I moved on to small things like ditaline or tubetini. Like the soup pastas. And then he moved on to the barilla minis mentioned above. I like (and Nolan likes) the mini wagon wheels. I make a beef bolognese for him and it gets stuck inside the spokes so he can self feed and get the meat and sauce without getting too mushy and messy.
We'll bring back pastina when he masters cutlery on his own!

I gave JJ pastina for about a week but like PP said, it is truly a mess! I cut up all types of pastas for him & he self feeds them. Sometimes I add some butter to it

Re: Another pastina question (and some other general pasta questions as well)
Aiden has pastina almost every night -- he loves to self-feed but I don't let him with the pastina (he's 20 months old and using a spoon for pastina is still tricky for him). He also loves mini ravioli and tortelini. By the time he was a year old, I was letting him try everything. I tend to go light on tomato sauce or use butter and olive oil. I also either don't salt or use very little salt for the cooking water.

Tyler eats any kind of pasta now. Ditalini, penne, you name it. I just put a teeny bit of butter and make it with peas. He loves it.

I do mostly penne too. He self feeds. Sometimes I do butter on it, but usually plain since he winds up so coated in grease when I use butter. He doesn't seem to mind it dry.

I tried pastina once and DS didn't like it THen I went to the ABC pasta and fed it to him until he got used to real food more. NOw I use elbow or penne. DS now loves marinara sauce with his pasta.
