Re: Another question about Raises?

Go in prepared. Write out what you do on a daily basis. Pick a number that you think you are worth and then write out a proposal as to why you think you are worth that.

Congrats on the raise that you did get!

Re: Another question about Raises?

The thing is, we already had this talk -me and my supervisor-and I asked for a reasonable amount-35K-but she doesnt decide it-the owners do...

Im not sure if I should ask her again, or go directly to the owners.

TY DEB!!!

Re: Another question about Raises?

Try doing some research on what other positions in your area make. Salary.com or monster has a tool.

However, if you are getting $300 more a month, that is $3600 more a month - if you are making about $30000, that is a very large percentage raise - between 10 - 12%. most raises are 3-5%..... I know we always want a big raise, and I have found, unfortunately, sometimes when you start out with a low salary, the only way to make what you want is to get a new job..........I have to say, in this day and age you are lucky to get that much of a raise.

Unfortunately, I agree. 10-12% is terrific today... most places give 2-5% annually.

The only way to get a good raise in a lot of places is to change positions (i.e. get a promotion) for more responsibility.

Good luck to you!!!!! Chat Icon

I agree as well. It's a good raise but your salary is low. You need a bump in salary level. Sometimes you need to leave a job.

Honestly, I have to agree as well. Anything above 5% is really excellent these days. You might want to start looking for something else - the experience will definitely help you find something more lucrative.

I agree. How about instead of asking for a bigger raise - you ask if there are any other positions available within the company that pay a higher salary that you can apply for. Ask about your potential for moving up in the company.

Re: Another question about Raises?

My brother just told me that I got a pretty good raise-10-12% is good-but not for the salary I started w/. LOL

The thing is, I just GOT promoted in May-I'm a manager now. There is no more top position. So that out of question.
I guess the only way I will make a real salary is if I leave the company-Chat Icon

The only way I was able to get a significant higher salary........is to move. Otherwise, I'd still be getting the same amount I did 10 years ago.

I hate change........but if you need a huge jump in salary........you have no choice but to switch companies.

Good luck!

Re: Another question about Raises?

I agree with a lot of the other posters. It sounds like you got a pretty significant raise already. I know you you feel though...it's like 10% of nothing is still nothing. (But hey, $300 more a month is still pretty darn good!)

But if you've maxed out on salary and position at your current company, the best move career-wise and salary-wise would be to start looking elsewhere.

I think you could definitely find something in the financial field. I'll do some research on my downtime and I'll send you an FM later today or tonight.

asking for more $ could jeopardize your employment. I have heard of this happening, I am sorry...

maybe you should start updating and sending out your resume?

Re: Another question about Raises?

I would have to suggest that before you go in to your supervisor, you try to get some information on what you believe your salary should be and discuss a salary adjustment in addition to your merit increase.

The raise that you just received is an entirely different issue and one that I would not necessarily advise you to argue. A 10-12% increase goes way above the normal merit amount so in that regard I can't imagine that they would increase that. However, if your salary is falling well below the norm for your position and responsibilities, the company should definitely review that. They seem to be sending a clear message that they value your performance, therefore I imagine that they would work with you to ensure that your salary is competitive with counterparts in your industry/

ETA: Definitely do some research online to see what other positions with similar experience and requirements are offering and compare them to yours - you can go to HR with that info...what you want to make doesn't always go over so well because honestly we all want to make a lot more. Facts will always help you out.

Good luck!!

Already did this--the problem is, my company is extremely cheap. Everyone gets paid a low salary, not just me. We have one HR person-who really does not know waht they are doin anyways LOL

I'm not sure if I should just ask my supervisor again..b/c I'm sure I'mj not the only one.....it cant hurt to ask tho...

I worked for a not-for-profit and while I expected to make a lower amount than my counterparts in corporate positions, I was so upset to find out that with my certification I was still making less than some of the people I worked with. My only option was to leave...so I did. It took me three more positions (including my current) to be at or above the salary for this type of position.

If they don't take care of you...you might want to consider leaving...you are worth more than they are giving you.

Re: Another question about Raises?

The financial industry is one of the top industries for highest salaries. You should be able to find something that suits you making more money.

I'm administrative and that's why I work for a big fat investment bank. I would love advertising but the pay blows.

Go out there and look for something else.

You could also ask for more money, but honestly, how much would make you happy? If they gave you another $200/month would that do it or are you looking for $15K more a year?

Depending on experience our admins start between $35K (no experience) - 65K. Raise is great but in terms of comp, you are definitely underpaid.

My friend works in finance. She's told me her admins are about $70K + a significant bonus.

HTH. Good luck!
