Another touchy subject: Al Sharpton
I know there was a touchy subject on here last night about a billboard in NYC but everytime I see Al Sharpton on TV I want to bang my head against the wall.
I want to start off by saying, yes, there is still unfair prejudice against black people in our community, as well as hispanics, jewish people, arabs, and many others. I think it is wonderful that there are people like Al Sharpton that choose to "lead" their community and fight for equal rights. However (and I will probably get flamed for this), I find it so frustrating that the only time he shows his face or "raises hell" is when a black person is hurt or mistreated in some way by a white person or a cop. I feel like if you are going to be a "leader", you should not only fight for your community, but you should also tell them when they are wrong and that they need to respect one another and stop killing each other, stabbing each other, etc. Ya know, where is he when a black person commits a crime against a white person? He ignores those crimes and acts as if they never happen.
He was crazy in advocating for the victims of the Sean Bell case. But where was he when one of the victims was arrested for beating the $hit out of his girlfriend? He was crazy when Don Imus made a comment about a black, female basketball player. But what about 50 Cent and other artists that use derogatory and racist words in almost EVERY song they sing. There was a case in the midwest where 4 black people randomly tied up 4 white people to a fence raped them, sodomized them, cut off the men's ****, poured checmicals on them and than set them on fire. Where was he when that happened?
If you are a "leader" you cannot choose and pick your arguments based on your agenda and what makes YOU look good.
ETA: I just want to add, since everyone will read this post and take it differently, I am in NO WAY racist or prejudice. I grew up in a diverse community and have been friends with people of all backgrounds my entire life. I also have a fairly diverse family. This is a discussion I have had numerous times with black friends who happen to agree and have brought some of these points to my attention. White, black, hispanic, whatever you are, there are always good and bad. White people commit crimes against each other on a daily basis. The point of my post is to discuss Al Sharpton and how he is as a leader.

You're right he has. But it seems like it was a one time thing b/c that is what was expected of him at the time. I'm not sure that he is actively advocating this.

Re: Another touchy subject: Al Sharpton
I am currently taking a class in leadership. This class breaks down leadership in its simplest form to mean influence. If I were to take that definition and apply it I could argue that Al Sharpton is in fact a leader. Another definition I have heard used to define is that a leader is someone who can influence. Influence is certainly something that I can see that this man does. I think in many ways Al Sharpton is a leader it's his politics and his approach that I can't defend.

Re: Another touchy subject: Al Sharpton
He always rears his head when he wants to complain, or accuse. But when those he accuses are proven otherwise, he never knows how to apologize and you don't hear a peep from him then. My Dh always says about Tawana Brawley, whom admittedly turned out to be lying all along. He never apologzied to anyone.
Look at the case with the guys from Duke. They were not guilty either ( I never thought they were) and no one offered a sorry to them for what that girl put them through after lying and accusing.
He is nothing but a trouble maker who wants to finger point and complain when it suits his platform.

I will keep nice and short.
I have seen better advocate than him. He only breeds hate and intolerance.

this is the definition of leadership, so for many, he is a leader. Personally, I think he's a donkey!

Re: Another touchy subject: Al Sharpton
he is not a leader, he is an antagonizer.
a true leader leads. they don't cause more problems than were there already. they also don't pick and choose their battles--they represent their cause regardless of race or whether they even agree with it. a leader leads his/her people toward something better.
