WARNING: Touchy subject inside...

Yesterday Martin Heidgen was sentence to 18 years to life for the death of Katie Flynn and Stanley Rabinowitz from July 2005 fatal drunk driving accident on Meadowbrook Pkwy.

This was such a tragic accident and my heart STILL aches for these families.

Do you think he was sentenced fairly? Should he have gotten less/more??

I think that for a murder charge, he didn't get enough! If it was manslaughter (which is what drunk drivers are mostly charged with) 18 yrs would suffice, but he was charged with murder - I don't know all the details behind the case but there's a big difference between the two and I think justice was not served!

Despite the verdict, nothing is going to bring back the innocent people this man killed, it's very sadChat Icon

Re: WARNING: Touchy subject inside...

18 years for 2 lives is not enough

18 years is really only 12- 1/3 off for good behavior- so he will be up for parole in 12 years- I'm sure Katie's family will be there evey time he goes before the board

I agree! He's not being held responsible for the pain and suffering he caused these two families either.

legit question here because i really didn't follow it

was it an honest accident? or was it careless (e.g. drunk driving)

He got behind the wheel after 14 drinks and got on the Meadowbrook going in the wrong direction and hit a limo coming from a wedding head on killing the driver and the flower girl (the bride's neice) inside. It was so tragic Chat Icon

Re: WARNING: Touchy subject inside...

Not nearly long enough. He will be out in a relatively short period and they will be in their graves. Katie will never grow into the woman she could have become and Stanley will never see any grandchildren grow up. However, his family will get to see him, speak to him and touch him every time they visit and when he gets out, he will continue to live his life. Too bad he couldn't get life without parole.

Re: WARNING: Touchy subject inside...

Glad he got the 18 years, but the Judge should have given him the maximum.

The jurors decided he drove with impraved indifference to his life and those on the road. He decapitated (for the most part) the little girl.

The sentence was too lenient!

The decision the jurors had to make was this:

Did he drive with impraved indifference to his life and the life of those on the road that night?
YES the jurors said and b/c of this, and the fact that other drivers that night honked and called 911 about a driver going the wrong way, he was charged with murder and not manslaughter.

That poor girl was decapatated and her mother and father had to witness that. That guy should have gotten life. From what I hear, he's not one bit remorseful. Horrible accident.

I think it was a fair sentence. He had a clean record and made one he-double hockey sticks of a mistake. The family will never get their child back and his family is losing a son for at least 12 years (when he goes up for parole).
