Another white noise question...will this be just another "crutch"?
I told my MIL I was getting a sound machine and she thinks it'll just be another thing and he needs to get used to hearing noise.
I guess that is true, but noise wakes ALL of us up. she herself is practically an insomniac...
so I guess my question is...will using this machine mean he won't sleep without it.
I am at a loss. I thought I found something I could use comfortably... but now I am not so sure.

Re: Another white noise question...will this be just another "crutch"?
I dont' see it as a crutch.. I sleep better with the AC on b/c of the noise and it's something that anyone can use forever.. it's not like a paci where you'd look pretty silly with as an adult..
John sleeps at daycare without it and takes 2 hour naps there....at home..he gets the noise..probably more of a habit for me though.

As someone who is a super light sleeper, I think you should get a white noise machine. We had one for B since his birth and he can sleep fine without it now. But we do use it when we know it is going to be noisy. LOL

Re: Another white noise question...will this be just another "crutch"?
I don't think it's a crutch. I do put on noise for my DDs, and have been since they first came home, but they also can sleep without the noise. I think it helps to lull baby to sleep, but my Sleep Sheep is on a timer, so it shuts off after 45 mins. Often times, my DDs wake up during naptime and the noise is no longer on, but they fall back to sleep anyway. I would totally get it if you think it may help.

This was my thought as well, but I agree that even adults use white noise sometimes (AC, Fan, etc..) so there is no harm.

I don't think its a crutch. I have humidifiers running in my kids rooms and they act like white noise. If we are out or sleep away (SIL's, sister, hotel etc.) they sleep fine without it.

It might be, but really, does it matter? I need background noise to sleep, and I don't see it as any kind of detriment.

Re: Another white noise question...will this be just another "crutch"?
My DD has a sound machine in her room (she's just over 2) and I can tell you that she could absolutely careless if it's on or off. She would sleep regardless. She doesn't need it at all but we use it simply to have ambient noise in her room that blocks out a little more of the noise we're making in the rest of the house while she sleeps. If nothing else it's soothing so why not get one? I don't see how it would do any harm whatsoever.

Re: Another white noise question...will this be just another "crutch"?
My son slept better with white noise and now he's 4 and sleeps fine without it.
We slowly weaned him off it by making it more and more quiet and finally he stopped asking for it.

Re: Another white noise question...will this be just another "crutch"?
We started using a fan in DS' room as a newborn (read that it cut down SIDS risk). We still use it (one of those rotating desktop ones). I notice a difference in his length of naps if I forget to turn it on but he certainly WILL sleep without it.

Also wanted to add that my mother HATES that we use white noise and refuses to use it for naps. She doesn't "get" it and says it should be quiet when you sleep. not loud LOL

same here, its moreso that the girls dont hear the rest of the house get up in the morning (by morning I mean 5am lol) but they sleep over my parents just fine without it.

What about using a humidifier instead? Serves 2 purposes! We've used a humidifier in DS' room just about every night since he was born.

We use a white noise machine in our room, I sleep so much better with it on! Ds has been using one since birth and sleeps great, if it's a crutch it's not one I'm going to get rid of anytime soon!!

We didn't start using one for DD until she was like 6 or 7 months. And she sleeps fine without it so I don't think its a big deal. In fact, the one she's using used to be in my room

Re: Another white noise question...will this be just another "crutch"?
I sleep with white noise (usually a fan, AC or CD) and I've done it since I was about 12 years old. DS sleeps with a fan. He used to sleep with white noise but we started to wean him off of it more b/c it was on my computer and I needed it. ha! I think we all have little things - if white noise is the worst of it, I'm ok with it.

Or a radio on static works too.

I have been playing music in DS room for well over a year and honestly I could care less if we had to use it forever. Whats the harm its just a sound machine.

Re: Another white noise question...will this be just another "crutch"?
I do believe it is another crutch, but you have to weigh your evils. DS slept with a pacifier until two. I didn't use a white noise machine because, honestly, I didn't think of it. Interestingly enough, he started sleeping through the night at 8 1/2 months during a period when we were using the humidifier because he had a cold. Maybe it was the noise... At 3 1/2, DS falls asleep with the radio on. Is it a crutch? I guess so, but it's a crutch I can deall with. And I plan to get a white noise machine if baby #2 has trouble sleeping.

my cousins wife uses them on her kids, 6 and 4 and they are in there napping for like 4 hours a day.
I wanted to steal it and run home with it.
THANKS EVERYONE. I think I'll make the investment. hopefully it will work for us!

Totally agree, here! When we created a "big boy" room for DS I actually packed it up, and he didn't even notice. We'll use it again in the twins' nursery. It was great for a good 2 1/2 years. Oh, and we also got a sleep sheep as a gift along the way. It is so cute and was helpful. That will go in the nursery, too.
