Any advice on potty training?

DS turned 3 last week and I wanted to know if anyone had any ideas on how to start getting the idea of potty training started and what else to do.

DS was diagnosed with ASD and is in a preschool that stresses they will start training when we give the green light. I wanted to start at home first so he's not overwhelmed.

He can follow two step directions. I just don't know how to explain the "urge" to go. I also have no idea how to start this...

Any advice on potty training?

My son is 4 with ASD and is non verbal. Do you have a good reward for him? For my son it was the iphone. We started with underwear and just putting him on the potty every 15 minutes. We also put a prompt on his ipad for him to request. When he went we rewarded him with the phone for like 10 minutes. He mastered going on the potty - so every time we put him on he went even just a little bit but he went in his pants all the time too. School was extremely helpful. We went from 15 mins to 30, etc... pooping was a whole other issue. He would go wherever...I have to admit in the beginning I was ready to give up. BUT after a few months I can say he is potty trained. He poops on there too. He is in underwear all day and knows that whenever we get home from anywhere he goes right to the bathroom. He is super routined (as ASD kids usually are) and he just goes with it. He definitely has accidents here and there but hes been doing great. The nighttime is a different story but we"ll get there!! PM if you need anything!!! Good luck!!!

Re: Any advice on potty training?

I started potty training DS at 3 1/2 while he was in his special ed preschool. I only started when I felt he was ready which was when he would run out of the pool to pee even if it was on himself. I recommend if you can trips to potty every 30min. I searched online for a potty chart to print out. I had it on a clip board and sent it to school to see progress. I always had h in pull-ups at school and at home I would have him in underwear but was on top of him like a hawk. Then pull-ups at night. I really liked the potty chart especially for when he was in school and rewards are great.

Re: Any advice on potty training?

Also I recommend you doing a short picture book of potty time. I would make a book my self taking real pictures of the soap, potty etc and put them in order of what he needed to do.
