any ladies planning on using cloth diapers?
I'm on the fence about this. I just looked it up after reading about it a long time ago...and i turned to DH and said "what do you think about cloth diapers?" and he gave me a funny look so i asked him if his mom used them and he said yes. he is not opposed to them but we were discussing wether or not i could handle cleaning poo off a diaper with my insane gag reflex...i dunno if i could ever handle it but...isn't it a significant savings??? my other concern is using the same washing machine we wash regular clothes in to clean poopie diapers (obviously i'd pre-clean them ahead of washing...assuming i could not gag and vomit while pre-washing)

If you have the patience for it and you really want to do it then more power to you ! Maybe buy a few and have reg diapers on hand in case . But give it a try at least .

Re: any ladies planning on using cloth diapers?
You should try it! Also, xpost to parenting - I know some moms use them.
As for poop, it gets all over them AND their clothes anyway so you get used to it LOL
I wanted to use them but I knew I was going back to work and didnt want to make extra work for my mom.

Re: any ladies planning on using cloth diapers?
I am seriously considering it and fortunate that DH's reply was, "I don't know any diapers, so whatever you get, you get" We were with friends who use them this weekend and it doesn't seem TOO bad so I think I am willing to give it a go...as for your gag reflex, is that something that got bad during pregnancy or all the time? Mine is pregnancy-induced so I hope to be out of it for the most part once I've given birth! LOL

I read somewhere, maybe in baby bargains you really don't save that much so unless your doing to save the enviornment it may not be worth it

Re: any ladies planning on using cloth diapers?
I use them and love them. We have saved A LOT of money. We invested about $200 in the beginning and that's it. Our water bill has gone up maybe a few dollars a month. They are easy and totally worth it IMO. We'll have to buy more for the new baby as the ones we have are pretty worn out, but its not even a question. When I first brought up cloth diapers to DH when I was pregnant the first time he thought I was crazy but went along with it (I think just to prove me wrong, lol) but it turns out he loves them too.

you save if and only if you home launder them.

Re: any ladies planning on using cloth diapers?
I thought long and hard about it for al ong time. I really had the intention to do it...but then I thought more about it, and thought about the commitment and decided against it. I figure being a first time mom is hard enough w/out that added stress...I really want to focus on breastfeeding and with all the new things I thought I would find it overwhelming....
But if you can do it I think it's great!

Re: any ladies planning on using cloth diapers?
I really thought about it. I was hoping to, but we can't home launder them due to the fact that we have public washer and dryers. I really thought it was a little unfair to wash poopy diapers in machines that are used by our whole building.
Honestly, if I had a washer and dryer in my apartment/house I would try it.

Re: any ladies planning on using cloth diapers?
We are! It will save us a lot of money, especially since utilities are included in our rent (we have a washer/dryer in the house). We plan on using BumGenius All-In-Ones because of their rave reviews, they have snaps instead of velcro, and they adjust in size as the baby grows. We were thinking of doing cloth diapers for quite some time (and researching), but this post on Young House Love is what won us over:

Re: any ladies planning on using cloth diapers?
i really don't know much about cloth diapers and cost and stuff... but i know they have those 'hybrid' diapers, where it is cloth diapers with disposable inserts (like gdiapers). they sound kind of like a compromise between cloth and disposable... i wonder if those are good?

Re: any ladies planning on using cloth diapers?
When my mom used cloth diapers long ago she had a diaper laundry service that would come , pick up dirty diapers and bring clean ones to her home. They don't have that anymore. I will most likely use both types. I think once you and your baby get into a routine you will know when you should use disposible and when to use cloth. Thats what i plan to do.

Re: any ladies planning on using cloth diapers?
the more i read about cloth diapers - the more convinced i am to at least try them. I have yet to find a reason not to do it.
as far as dealing with poop - you still have to deal with it - this is just a step or two more. And as far as washing them in the machine- if the baby pooped all over their clothes/sheets/ etc you'd still wash those in your machine so its the same thing really.

Acutally - there is still diaper service available
This one services all of Long Island and the city
$30 / week (depending on what package but this is standard)

I'm definitely going to give cloth diapering a try. My mom used them with my sisters and with me and she said we never once had a rash!

Re: any ladies planning on using cloth diapers?
Hmmm, there are some very convincing arguments on here (especially the laundry service )...if I weren't doing daycare after 3 months (which requires disposable diapers), then I might have looked into it. Maybe I'll win lotto and not have to work and then I'll be able to try cloth diapers

Re: any ladies planning on using cloth diapers?
this is something we are going to look into. since i am going to be a sahm i think i will be able to keep on top of the laundry. i want to do it for the environment but even more to save some money. i know we'll be doing more laundry once the LO comes anyway - plus i have HE machines.

Re: any ladies planning on using cloth diapers?
For my newborn, we use a combination of Flip and Best Bottom diapers (www.nickisdiapers.com). They are both hybrid systems. Plus they are so cute! (see avatar)
Cloth diapering is so easy. Definately seems more intimidating than it actually is. We use a diaper sprayer to spray the "poo" off the diaper and into the toilet, then keep it in a wet bag in the bathroom until I am ready to wash - every day or other day depending on how many covers I used.
The flip system even has disposable inserts for when you are out and about.
I have invested $350 in the diapers and I will probably spend $300-$400 more as she grows. Definately a lot more than the $3k we've spent on my toddler so far.
Kellyscloset.com and NickisDiapers.com both have trials so that you use them without investing a lot of money.
Let me know if you have any questions. A few sites to look into regarding cloth diapering - diaperswappers.com diaperjunction.com
