Re: Anyone else planning on using cloth diapers?

I don't know much about it, although I have always wanted to b/c regular diapers seem like such a waste. I would love to hear more about it.

Re: Anyone else planning on using cloth diapers?

I have thought about it, my mom used them on all 7 of us. I really go back and forth and can't decide. I do like that babies who use cloth diapers train earlier and have fewer rashes.

I am Upstate and cannot find any diaper services around here, which is a bit of a deterrent for me.

Yes, I am planning on it although everyone tells me I am crazy. I know there are few ladies on parenting who use fuzzi bunz.

Re: Anyone else planning on using cloth diapers?

My plan is to use the bum genius one size (AKA: The 3.0) for Baby R. Bum Genius

You will obviously save money on diapers since the average couple will spend about $5,000 on diapers from birth to potty training. My BFF uses cloth diaper and she made the investment of 24 Bum Genius diapers, 24 Microfiber doublers, 1 wetbag and it was about $500. Bum Genius's are one-size diapers…meaning that they will adjust with Baby R as s/he grows so s/he will be in these diapers until s/he is potty trained. We also plan on having more kids…so you can double the savings if you use them on more than one baby.

My reasons are economical and envionmental. Plus, I feel uncomfortable with all the chemicals in baby diapers.

I feel the same way. I am having twins and I know it will be difficult but I am determined to do it. I read in a twins book the other day that you will go through about 1,000 diapers in the first 60 days!!!! Thats crazy, it would absolutely kill me and go against everything I stand for to create that kind of trash.

I will look into the brand you mentioned.

We are going to use G diapers. With 2 under 2 I would do nothing other than wash diapers if we went cloth.

Re: Anyone else planning on using cloth diapers?

Jeannine - I was looking for a diaper service too but all my friends who cloth diaper said it's just not worth the cost.

Actually, here is an email from my friend -- we were just talking about diaper services the other day:

Girl, don’t do a diaper service! They are SOOOOO easy to wash yourself!!! I promise it’s easy peasy!!! A diaper service usually only does prefolds and covers…plus they have to use really strong chemicals to wash them in to get them clean….and your diapers will get washed with EVERYONE else’s diapers. Here’s my washing routine.

I wash every 2-3 days

1. Empty diapers into washing machine and turn wetbag inside out and stick in washer too

2. Do cold wash/cold rinse cycle with no detergent

3. Hot wash/ cold rinse cycle with additive free detergent (a lot of people like Country Save detergent…you can find it at Whole Foods)

4. Extra cold rinse

Then stick in dryer on medium until fluffy….or you can hang to dry and then stick them in the dryer for a few minutes to fluff them up a bit.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE diaper laundry day!! There is something so satisfying about seeing all Ella’s diapers all fluffy and clean!!

Are these safe for a cesspool? It looks like they are more designed to be flushed in a sewer system.

The composting is an interesting idea though, I want to start composting anyway.

We actually will probably not flush & will compost. We have recently ordered an outdoor compost system, so by the time little bean 2 is here we should have a pretty good handle on it.

I personally would not flush them with a septic system.

Re: Anyone else planning on using cloth diapers?

I know my DH will think I am nuts to create 'extra" work for myself, but I really want to try to keep down my trash and landfill waste. I can't promise I will, but I am glad you started this thread so we can learn/

You can't compost the poopy ones though, so will you throw them away?

Where did you get the composting system from?

You don't need a diaper service, you can wash them at home, its actually better - see Lizzy's post above.

I tried with DD and it was not for me. Hats off to all the people who stick with it and do it!!

Mothering.com forums would have a lot of useful information I'm sure.

We have a sewer so those we will probably flush. We are still working out the kinks really. Actually my aunt composts alot and she does throw out animal waste but I think she does it separately. I am not sure that she re-uses that compost though, or what it's final use is. She is going to help me out with the details.

We got the compactor from a website. DH got a recommendation. I'll ask him later which site it is.

Thanks for the info. I really have been leaning towards it lately and I just saw a posting on craigslist for 12 of the BumGenius diapers with inserts for $150.

It's so hard to think about adding all of those diapers to the landfill and I hate the idea of the chemicals and that it pulls so much moisture away from the skin, the child doesn't know it is wet.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

I know you're not supposted to compost poop because it can grow bacteria. However, I have read you can compost it separately and use it on flowers - but not on food. I'd have to do more research on that.

I love the idea of potty training earlier, too Chat Icon

My friends have babies in disposables and cloth and truthfully, the babies that are in disposables smell like pee when they get wet. Babies in cloth, not nearly as much.

I WISH I could use cloth diaper systems, but frankly, we would have to wash at the laundromat every day, and that would be a major expense and PIA...

One thing:

It's TOTALLY not safe to add human waste to a compost pile.... the whole pile will turn into biohazardous waste field. Keep all poop and pee (human and animal) away from the heap..... it's only safe for veggie kitchen scraps and yard debris.

here is a link with more info on what to never compost...

yeah there's a lot of bacteria - not safe - although thats only the case with poop, not pee. Pee is sterile.

I used Bum Genius and Fuzzi Bunz with DS. I plan on doing it again with this one.

I also started toilet training him earlier than most. He started using the potty on a regular basis around 17 months.
