We went with Home Depot for our rugs. For $2,000 we got 4 bedrooms, a hallway, living room and Den done. We had to rip out all the old stuff ourselves for 2 reasons. One it smelled so bad we had to get rid of it ASAP. Secondly, it was covered in animal excrement (from the previous owner) so no one would touch it since it was considered hazardous materials. But it was real easy to remove and the garbage men took it as a regular pickup.

Wow, we paid way less than that, and got really good carpet in three bedrooms. check out Village Carpet in West Hempstead on Hempstead Turnpike.

My personal experience with Empire Carpet was HORRIBLE. I actually posted about all the mess ups. From a HORRIBLE salesman to high prices for carpet we didn't want.
I prefer to go into a store & see hundreds of types & styles of carpet not just what some sales guy has in his car.
I had WONDERFUL service, quality carpet - 5 star Shaw for the same price that Empire was trying to push off on some 2 star carpet - that wasn't even the style we wanted.
G Fried is where we'll ALWAYS get our carpet from.

I had a goo experience with Empire for my DS's bedroom but it is small.
Then we used my Dad's friend Kelly Carpet in Seaford and we got a great deal. We are going to use them again for the new baby's room and our hallway and stairs.
