anyone convert a garage into a bonus room?
Now that i am preggo with #2 we are thinking about converting the garage into a bonus room/play room. We have a 2 car garage (which we haven't parked our cars in in years) and we are thinking about using about 3/4 of that space for an extra room and leaving the other 1/4 for storage. We would not want to make a permanent change because I know it would be bad for resale. What we're thinking of is installing new garage doors (for better insulation) and then putting insullated false walls in front of them. We would have to take down the wall between the two garages. I'm sure there will be load bearing beams, but we can just sheet rock around them. Has anyone done a project like this? Did you do it yourself, or pay a contractor to do it for you?

Ours was already done but fully converted. Your first step should be to check w/your town to see if what you want to do is legal

in my town (incorporated village) it is illegal to convert a garage into living space. it's also illegal to knock down a free standing garage on your property and not replace it. definitely check with your town/village codes first!

we are considering pushing back the wall in our garage to expand the den about 14 feet. it will cost $10,000 for everything if we decide to do it including moving the bathroom.

the house we are buying did this, honestly I see no point in a garage unless you need it for storage. My parents had a garage and never parked their car in it once. I just hope there is no CO issues for it - otherwise we are just throwing a damn garage door up.

I would wager a guess that it's illegal here too. They're very strict about codes in my town. But honestly, that won't stop me. Like I said, we aren't doing it permanently and we would take it back to a garage before ever selling. We really just need some extra space with baby #2 on the way.

My sister in law did it - converted her garage into two bedrooms. She did have to get permission from the town though and have it inspected.

The previous homeowners did exactly what you plan on doing and we use it for a playroom. They added a seperate air conditioner/heating unit and their is a window there too. My favorite part of the room is the door . I do not clean it up every day I just shut the door. They did make it legal though because it was on the survey.

We considered it.. not for a bonus room but to add on to our livingroom/kitchen. DH has too much junk.. we need that space for it lol
