Anyone else have/had an infant that would not make eye contact?

I dont think I would ever have even noticed if DD and DS weren't complete opposites...

They are 3.5 months (1.5 mo. adjusted). DD will stare at you the entire time she's eating, will look at you when you talk to her, etc. DS on the other hand never makes eye contact. And of course what do I read on the internet, early sign of autism - little to no eye contact Chat Icon I know Im probably looking way too far into things here but now it's really bothering me. I know all babies are dfferent, I just wish he would look at me. Chat Icon

Oh goodness-I know the worry starts the minute you find out you are pregnant and it never stops BUT-he is 3.5 months old. Way too early for it to mean anything except that he is very interested in the environment around himChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You're not being ridiculous, you're being a concerned mommy.

My DD was very similar. DS was content to look at me when he ate, DD was looking everywhere else! She is the happiest, most social and well adjusted baby now.

It's normal to worry about everything under the sun when you have kids. But I agree with the PPs - 3.5 months is too young as long as he's doing everything else he should. Does he smile, laugh, make eye contact with DD?

DS was the same way, I too, like you right away worried about it (and thought of autism), he'd even stare at corners of the walls rather than look at me when nursing. Later on though he became a total social little guy...(maybe like 5-6 mos..can't remember exactly) don't worry or stress about it. They're all differentChat Icon

Re: Anyone else have/had an infant that would not make eye contact?

now that you says it DS#1 would always try NOT to look at me and would turn his head even when i tried turning his body to me. he would also lay on the couch and stare into the corner or out the window. he's 25months now and it non stop.

you're not being ridiculous...we'll never stop worrying. we're mommies that's our job Chat Icon

btw...DS was about 5months when he was doing that and he was full term.

Re: Anyone else have/had an infant that would not make eye contact?

I'm an autism consultant, so I freak out about anything that looks remotely like autism. So, I have noticed this with my DS, also. I think it is a problem twin moms have...comparing kids. It is especially tough when you have opposite sex twins because they just mature so differently.
My twins are almost 5 months and DD is a social butterfly...always engaging people. DS, on the otherhand, would rather look at the dog, tv, toys, whatever else is going on. But, he does look at us and smile and engage with us on his terms. I think that is just his personality, and the fact that he is a boy.
It is WAY too early to be worrying about eye contact. So, don't freak yourself out. Chat Icon
