What do you think the proper height is that I should get for a 9 year old?

Chat Icon Chat Icon sounds like a worldy girl. I wonder if you can find a nice bookmark to throw in too...maybe something personalized from Etsy?
I just love kids who are into reading.

We did. One wanted Baby Alive and the other wanted one of those doll head things you can do hair and makeup on.

One year we had a kid that wanted a warm coat and gloves. Chat Icon

I agree

What's standard size? And how much are they, generally?

Like I'm not sure if this kid lives in the city and how would they have one of those giant basketball hoops, KWIM? Like I wonder if he meant one of the indoor ones you can put behind the door?

I'm stupid when it comes to sports and city-life. Chat Icon

All of your kids sound exactly like what I was hoping for and expecting.

I got my two and both of them want Ripstiks (fancy skateboards). Cheapest I can find is like $50, plus wrapping, plus shipping. No other options given. One is 8, one is 10. Both from the same location in Brooklyn.

I'm a little taken aback to be honest. I WANT to give them what they want, but spending $60 per kid is more than I've allotted for kids in my own family!

Re: Anyone get their Winter Wishes letter yet?

What is this Winter Wishes program? I did the Salvation Army Angel Tree last year, which I will do again this year. Just wondering what this program is about and where I can find more info.

The first couple of years I did the program, I received requests like those above (aside from a basketball hoop). Then the following two letters, I received extravagent requests from 15 and 16 year olds. Designer clothing and expensive video games. I too was a bit taken back. I was surprised that the school doesn't tell them to include some alternate, less expensive gift ideas. I didn't participate this year because of this. Like you, I don't even spend $60 on the kids in my family. While it's sad that these children are poor and don't get a lot, I think the over the top request are a turn off.

I will likely pick an angel off the tree at a local establishment.

This is what I've done in the past.

Last year we went to the elementary school in our area and asked if they were doing anything for the children in need in our town. And they gave us information (age and clothing size) on a little girl at the school and we went shopping for her.

We will be doing it again this year.

I just signed up for a letter and the website did say the requests are usually for gifts under $40 however, they said to spend what you can afford.........even if it's not exactly what's on the wish list. They gave a link of gift ideas for girls and boys. I am excited to donate a gift but I too cannot afford $60 when I don't even spend that on the kids in my life too.

I received a Great letter yesterday from an 8 year old litte girl who lives in Brooklyn. She told me a little about herself and that she loves to read and write.

Her gift request was a Password Journal.. ( which $20, so I will be either buying some additional gifts for her or maybe a giftcard to Barnes n Noble)

I am excited to send her gift! Chat Icon
