anyone have a sleep study? UPDATE :(
Dh has to have one, wondering if anyone can share experience. Tia!
Update: wow here it is six months later. FINALLY got dh to do the study. He's had other unrelated issues going on so he finally had time to go. The experience he said was horrid. He told me at one point in the night he woke up with all that sh!t attached to him, panicked, and nearly ripped it all off and ran home
But he finished the test and we got the results last thurs: moderate apnea. He desaturated down to 86% (the amt of O2 in his blood, anything below 90 is dangerous). I'm flipping. He also is not getting rem sleep. This is why he's continuously exhauted. Md wanted him to do the cpap trial, but after the lab experience he said no way, i'll try the dental appliance route first.
Now its almost 1 am, i cant sleep because i keep checking to make sure he's breathing. A family friend's brother went into resp failure due to apnea and ultimately died, so now im a wreck. I'm calling the dentist the md recommended in the am. Thanks for all the earlier replies. Rod i'm sure i'll be asking you stuff about the appliance...

Re: anyone have a sleep study?
I've done 3. Baseline, with a CPAP, and with an oral appliance.
You get your own room (at least the office I went to. I'm sure they're all that way.) with a TV. You get there close to bedtime. They tell you a little about what they are going to do, then hook up about 20 wires to various spots on your head, face, chest and ankle(to check for leg movement). They do some test of the equipment. Have you hold your breath, breathe in a certain pattern, move your leg, count to 10 (for audio checks), then say good night.
You then just sleep as best as you can, and in the morning they come in and take everything off. You do an evaluation of how you felt before the test and after (how tired you feel, how much more you could sleep, etc).
It's not that bad. Definitely wouldn't want to do it every night, and it not comfortable, but it's not bad, especially when you know it will help you sleep better for the rest of your life.

Re: anyone have a sleep study?
I had one at Good Sam, it was fine. I think I had to be there by 9pm and they wake you up to go home around 6-7am. I was in a full size bed, with a tv. It was very hard to sleep because you had a lot of wires on your body but nothing hurt. It was quite an easy experience.

Re: anyone have a sleep study?
thanks so much for the replies. dh has a hard enough time sleeping through the night, this is probably going to be a hot mess (once I actually find a place that is)

Re: anyone have a sleep study?
I did one a few years ago because I never sleep through the night and I am always tired. The results came back that my body wakes me up every time it tries to go into a deeper sleep, which averaged about every 20-30 minutes throughout the night. I was told that I don't have sleep apnea and that everything else was normal. Um...seriously? Then why does my body keep waking itself up and I am always exhausted. Anyway, hope your DH has a more productive experience than myself.

Re: anyone have a sleep study?
I just did this last week. I will be 100% honest - I HATED IT and all I wanted was to come home.
It wasnt bad as in nothing hurt it was just miserable bc I don't sleep well to begin with.
I went to the hospital and got the a little after 9PM and met the tech. I got settled into the room and got changed. Getting me hooked up took about 20 minutes. The tech needed to clean cerain spots on my head to hook all these things too. He used a "glue" (kinda like a thinck gel) to attch everyhting on my head. There were 2 wires on my chest and 2 on my legs. After that I got into bed read a little and then it was "lights out". I couldn't sleep bc I was not comfortable, felt like if I tried to move i was going to pull something off. I was told that the test took about 4 hours of sleeping so if I got up by 5/6am then I was done. When I got up I called the tech, he had to unhook me and then i ran out lol
I was sooo tired the next day bc I kept waking up all night.
Good luck to your hubby.

This seems to be happenong to dh also, on top of **my diagnosis of sleep apnea (not officially diagnosed except by me). What was the outcome/treatment if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you for sharing, I'm sure dh will have the same experienced. Can you bring your own pillow/blanket?? I'm sure that will help somewhat!

Sure, you can bring your own stuff. It is irrelevant to the actual test, so it won't affect anything, and if it makes him more comfortable, it should be just fine.
You (he) WILL be tired the next day, no question about it. As bad as all of us who need a sleep study actually sleep, all the wires just make it that much worse. However, just keep in mind that one bad night will be the start of decades of good sleep, so it's certainly worth it.

Re: anyone have a sleep study?
I've had two - the first one I was so uncomfortable I barely slept, they said I had to do another one becuase I didn't have enough REM sleep. Yeah - becuase I had leads, etc. stuck to my head, etc.
The second time I went back I took a Tylenol PM and my pillow. I still only slept 5 hours.

The outcome was that I wasn't diagnosed with sleep apnea. They told me all was normal. I few years later I am still always tired and I never sleep for more than a few hours at a time without waking up. So in a nutshell, there was no outcome/treatment. :o(

Re: anyone have a sleep study?
my DH has. Totally freaked out. I woke up in the am to a ton of text messages.
The only way I got him to go back was to book the appointment & tell him it's a $350 charge if he cancels.
He has sleep apnea. Has the machine. Doesn't use it. Total waste of time & money as I still freak out when he stops breathing in the middle of the night.

Have him look into an oral appliance. I tried the CPAP, but couldn't sleep at all. It was getting dangerous. After about 4 months, for my own safety, I had to stop using it. I was fitted with a mouthpiece that pushes the lower jaw out, which opens the airway. With it on the lowest setting, I went from about 80 times and hour that I stopped breathing, to about 15. 10 and under is "normal". I'm assuming that I'm in the normal range, since I've increased the level from the lowest setting, so it should be even better.
Once you get used to it, there's no hoses, no machine, nothing in your way. I can still talk with it in (I wouldn't give speeches with it in, but I can still get my point across), and very few people would even know I had it in if they saw me.
Definitely something worth looking into. Mine was custom made, and $$$, but covered by insurance. They have OTC versions as well. The are called mandibular advancement devices.

How did your husband do? I just thought about this post bc I got my CPAP machine yesterday. I HATE it! I was able to use it for 1.5 hrs last night then I had to take it off. It turns out that I stopped breathing 28 times an hour. My doc wanted to send me back for another test but I literally cried - that is how much I didn't want to go back. So he got me approved for this machine that regulates the pressure (or whatever its called) as I breathe.
Hopefully after I have surgery & lost the weight I need to I will not need this anymore.

Oh no so or to hear all this! He has not gone yet, I have left messages for the place on sunrise and a place in queens and no return calls. Seems every time I call they've closed or busy. We were away for 2 weeks so thanks for the reminder to pursue it again. Every time I hear him stop breathing at night I freak.

Rod i'm sure i'll be asking you stuff about the appliance...
More than willing to help in any way I can...
Besides me sleeping better with the app, DW sleeps so much better knowing that I'm breathing the entire night......
If he only has mild apnea, the oral app should work pretty good for him.
There is a "learning curve" for the device, but it is SOOOO worth it. It may be uncomfortable at first, since you're forcing the jaw forward all night, but it's like stretching any muscle, once you do it a while, it no longer hurts.

Good to know. The pulmonologist mentioned a chance of tmj since the jaw is protruded. Did they mention this to you?
The report said moderate apnea, so im hoping the app works

Re: anyone have a sleep study? UPDATE :(
I refused to go back for another test and I had moderate/sever sleep apena. My doctor was able to put it through to my insurance so that I got a machine that regulated the air pressure based on me. I didnt have to test out the machine in a second study. He put it in as I was having anxiety and panic attacks due to the first test.
