Re: Anyone here get the Pertussis shot for you?
yup, me, DH, my mom and my MIL all just got it. It was highly recommended for anyone who will be around the boys a lot in the future.

Re: Anyone here get the Pertussis shot for you?
I got it while in the hospital after I delivered the twins.
I made DH get it while we were at the girls first well visit - the ped gave it to him.
My parents each got it at their GPs office (right before the girls were born)
Apparently adults are the ones passing on whooping coffee to newborns. DH goes into peoples houses for a living, so who knows what he gets exposed to. We didn't want to take ANY chances!
My arm was sore for a couple of days. But other than that I had no side affects.

Re: Anyone here get the Pertussis shot for you?
There was mention of getting the booster when I was pregnant with DD2. This was when the outbreak at Good Sam was going on. I kind of brushed it off and figured DD2 had my immunities from bf'ing. I had it in the back of my mind to get the vaccine when I had a chance.
When DD2 was 7 weeks old, she developed a cough, less than a week later she was hospitalized under suspicion of whooping cough. DH had recently gotten a booster for school, DD1 had her vaccine recently as well. So that left me and possibly other non boostered adults as the culprits. But since I was sick too? I blamed me, I was the likelyh contributor. Needless to say, I got my booster ASAP. Apparently those of us who haven't had a booster in a while are passing on the disease to newborns and infants who are very susceptible to the disease and can die from it whereas we just pretty much get an annoying cough for a long time.
I will never forget the sounds my DD2 made when she coughed. I will never forget what retracting looks like on a 10lb infant. I will never forget rushing to the emergency room twice with her or having her admitted 3 days before Christmas.
I will never forget how it felt waiting for the cultures to come back from the state. It takes a couple weeks for the state to grow the culture. Not knowing if she had the disease or not for sure. Torture.
It turned out to not be whooping cough but a virus that was very similar. Her issues, for the most part resolved within a month or so, give or take a week or two. I can't imagine having her sick as long as whooping cough is, which my Dr told me back in China it was called the 100 day cough because it lasted about 100 days. 100 days of listening and watching her cough like that? Horrifies me to think of it. I am so thankful it turned out not to be whooping cough and that she got better fast.

Oddly enough- my hospital did not offer it to me- I would have taken it if they did.
My question now is- DD is over 1 year old and has had all her shots on time. Isn't she fully immune now to pertussis from her own vaccines? Do I still need to get it this year?
She isn't fully immune, because the vaccines are not 100% guaranteed. Also, the children who got pertussis over the summer were all fully vaccinated.
