I think the heatolator just blows the hot air from the wood burning fire into the room, but otherwise works the same.

1st things 1st. There is a chimney correct? Because I do not see it in the picture.
A heatolater is a unit which slides into your fireplace. So what you are looking at is a sleeved unit. It can come out if it does not work.
If it does work it should have an electric blower that pushed the hot air out the vents to heat the room. All units due differ a little. Ty to find the manufacturer of the unit and see if you can get a copy of the instruction manual.

I find the most of the fireplace stores not helpful at all.

Good Luck,
Arthur

Ok thanks everyone

Yeah it has a brick chimney, its behind the wall. So it sounds like they just have an insert that makes it easier to heat the room or something? Sorry we know nothing about fireplaces nor have ever operated one so I had some questions...

Re: Anyone know something about this type of fireplace?

We have essentially the same type of fireplace. It has two top and two bottom grates that suck the air in and send it back out warmed. We don't have any electric blowers attached to it. It pretty much works the same as a regular fireplace.
