Anyone know the reason for genetic testing while TTC?
The RE is sending us for genetic testing (fragile X, cystic fybrosis and a few others) He said these things dont prevent you from getting pg, but may lead to things once you are pg. Also, DH is half jewish. His genetic testing is some kind of "jewish screening" as the Dr decribed...?
Anyone know the reason why we're being tested for these things? Has anyone opted out of the testing?

We did Genetic Testing... B/c I knew that my DH had the Sickle Cell Trait, and I had that Thalesemia trait and when they are combined we had a 25% chance of having a sick child.
When seeing an RE... we decided to go straight to IVF so we can do the Genetic Testing on our Embryos (PGD) to make sure we were implanting back embryo's that weren't sick.
I think if you don't know about any traits now you are most likely clear but its always better to just make sure. My DH and I knew we both had these traits since a young age which is why we went this route.
I think its just a precautionary thing.
Good Luck and wishing you a BFP asap!

Well a RE's job is to get you pregnant, but also to get you pregnant with a healthy baby.
I found out from genetic testing that I'm a carrier for Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Thankfully my husband was tested and he's not a carrier! If he was, our future children would have a 1 in 4 chance of getting the disease.
No one in my family has the disease, so if I wasn't tested I would not have known.

Here is somewhat of a repost of mine from a while back:
I had a panel of tests done for Ashkenazi Jews (Jews from Eatern Europe and Russia) before I was married. It tested to see if I was a carrier for certain genetic disorders that I could be a carrier for such as:
Tay-Sachs disease, Canavan disease, familial dysautonomia, Niemann-Pick (type A) disease, Fanconi anemia (group C), Bloom syndrome, Gaucher disease (the non-neuronopathic type), mucolipidosis type IV, and glycogen storage disease type 1. They also test for cystic fibrosis because it is often included in an Ashkenazi heritage screening panel, since it occurs with the same frequency in European Jews as in members of the non-Jewish Caucasian population (approximately 1/3,000).
I had a bunch of vials of blood drawn, but it was really non invasive and not painful.
If a woman and a man are both carriers for some of these disorders, they stand a 1 in 4 chance of having a child with the disease/disorder. A disease such as Tay Sach's is very painful and it is likely that a child born with this disease could die by the time they are 5. It was simply not a chance I was willing to take.
There are also other types of testing done that do other things. Karyotype testing identifies and evaluates the size, shape, and number of chromosomes in a sample of body cells. It determines whether the chromosomes of an adult have an abnormality that can be passed on to a child. We both had this done after my second miscarriage before I had my DD.
