We are coming to NY to see family for Christmas. DH and I talked last night about going to Radio City while we’re there. Then we remembered that our children are not vaccinated, and we wouldn’t be able to go. Oh well.

Our trip to NY will be short, and we are going to spend our money on a vacation to Florida.

So yes, NYC lost our tourist money. Probably many others, too.

Kids 12 and under can attend without being vaccinated or providing a negative test. They just have to wear a mask.

The NYC restaurant and entertainment mandate has been in effect for many weeks….I assume there are only a small handful of covid cases there now?

Yes and major spikes on Long Island because they aren't requiring it. Right?
From what I saw in Farmingdale tonight the bars and restaurants are PACKED. Spilling into the streets, shoulder to shoulder. No masks. No vaccine requirements. But that's ok because it isn't in the confines of NYC? Yes, yes, makes total sense.

Every place is packed. We had to put our name on a list for dinner last night as we had over 6 people and then still had an hour and a half wait. We left the restaurant at 9:30, they close at 11 and there were people pouring in to eat.

Any day of the week people are out and places are packed and they are shoulder to shoulder. I have yet to see one person have Covid who is testing with me, as yes, I am still not vaccinated and test weekly. This week twice the way my work week fell.

This is really what I don't understand. Why is it ok on Long Island to enter a restaurant with no proof of vax, but not in NYC? What's the difference?
Someone please explain this one to me.
I'm all ears.

I would love to know too as it makes no sense to me either.

No vaccination required on LI to go to clubs and bars and restaurants while you are no where near 6 feet apart. Are they stupid enough to not realize they are losing money in the city?

And lets look at Florida for an example. NO MANDATES and cases have come down 90 percent since August actually their current case numbers put them as one of the lowest states in the entire country right now.

link

There is also new research that came out saying that vaccinated people are just as likely to spread covid to their families as unvaccinated. I don't understand what the justification is for the mandates at this point.

Anyone live or work in NYC?

It doesn't make any sense why it is only NYC, the only reason is because DiBlasio mandated it, the state didn't. But LI will be next...the whole state will be in this situation soon enough. Everyone was so desperate to get rid of Cuomo. I hope they are all happy now. Hochul is 1000x worse, and will implement a statewide vaccine mandate. I can almost guarantee it.

Why? Numbers have gone down and places are packed all the time. Places will fight I am sure as they don’t want to go back where we were last year.

Most places are vaccine or test. I would rather know I don’t have it as anyone vaccinated who doesn’t have to test for work or events could be sick and not know it.

Have you been out on LI lately?

Nope as numbers are down and people are over this. More places fully opened and less people wearing masks out. Like normal in many places.

Yep. There is zero reason to mandate at this point. Long Island has been business as usual for months now, no mandates, packed bars and restaurants and nothing.

I live on Long Island, so yes. I've been out on Long Island. I don't think the governor cares that people are over it. She has already said she is considering a vaccine mandate for students statewide. I do not think a restaurant vaccine mandate us coming, but I do believe more mandates for schools and state employees are. Not sure if we will leave. I do eventually want to wind up in New England so now may be a good time. We shall see.

Also, NYC restaurants are packed same as LI. My husband owns three restaurants in Manhattan and Queens. Wait times are at pre pandemic levels.

NYC also currently has the lowest infection rate in the state.
I don't believe in vaccine mandates for ANYONE, and I don't believe in some of these stupid quarantine rules for school, I really don't believe any of this is necessary anymore.
Someone just asked about infection rates and the city's is considerably lower than the infection rate here on the island. Either way I don't think anyplace in the state needs a vaccine mandate, just answering the question someone had.

NYC makes me so sad. What a difference in the last 5 years. My friends with college age kids don’t even want to send their kids there for college anymore which makes me sad because I went to school in NYC and had the best experience. Even my vaccinated friends don’t want to go there anymore, It’s filled with garbage, the aroma of people smoking weed, homeless and crime. Sadly, the nyc residents brought it upon themselves. Voting in DiBlasio not once but twice is almost incomprehensible to me.

Republican politicians don’t mandate vaccines....take action next week if it matters to you. Stop sticking with party lines that got us into this mess.

I literally looked up everyone in my nyc votes book yesterday to see their views on vaccine mandates.

That is awesome then if they are getting people to spend money in the NYC restaurants. I couldn’t go and honestly have no interest to go. I can do almost everything every other place.

Putting the vaccine mandates aside, I have no interest in doing anything in NYC for a while as I no longer feel as safe there as I did just 2 short years ago.
I certainly would never ride the subway alone like I used to without a second thought 2 years ago.
Real effing shame.

Anyone live or work in NYC?

The reality is this entire state is being driven into the ground and it has been for quite some time now. I hate NYC. I hate Long Island. I look forward to the day that we can finally pick up and move.

.

You are right about that but some areas of NY aren’t as bad. We moved an hour north of NYC. You would roll over if you knew how much I paid for my 2600 sq ft new construction house compared to LI prices.

ETA: I work in Manhattan and restaurants appear packed as ever. I also don’t know anyone who refused the vaccine so the mandate doesn’t seem to be an issue where I am.

Yup… Unfortunately it isn’t looking good for us staying here. Things may change depending on some things but it looks like we will be leaving. One good thing Hochul did was sign a bill for three year average for certain public employees so DH will leave with a nice pension.

ETA - and as much as I hated Cuomo - I think things would be better.

I guess the goal is going to have a 100% vaccinated NY? That goal will never be obtained as there is a huge discrepancy in vaccination rates in certain zip codes (the Ultra Orthodox don’t vaccinate for the more common things - and in the community near me - their cases are through the roof and they are at 15% vaccination rate.

Thanks for the info. Two of my kids are 12 and 15, and do not have the Covid vaccine.

I Always wondered...do they ask for a birth certificate at the door too? To prove they are under 12?
My DD is 11 but will be able to pass for under 12 for awhile.
Are they proofing kids now?

Second week in a row with no garbage pick up.

this is being done on purpose by the sanitation workers. From what I understand 40% of NYC sanitation workers are not vaccinated and now not working. The vaccinated workers are standing by their unvaccinated peers by not picking up the slack. If they did, there would be no reason to worry about the unvaccinated workers returning to work- they wouldn't need them. I totally get it.
As a resident of NYC, this is just nuts to me.
I'm vaccinated, but I don't believe in these mandates, especially for people like sanitation workers- makes no sense. My daughter lost teachers in school and the subs are terrible....although I sort of do understand the mandate for teachers- they are trying to protect our kids.
I've been to many restaurants- some are following the rules and checking cards, but some are not.
