Anyone move and have kids change schools?

We are moving in a few weeks and DS1 will start a new school in September. He will be going into second grade.

Does anyone have any experience with this? How did your kids handle it? Any advice?

I have him signed up for summer activities in the new town and hopefully he'll meet some kids that way. I am sure he will adjust fine but of course I worry!

I think that is still young enough to adjust fine :) Not that they can't adjust at any age but we moved at the end of my 8th grade year and that was tough. My friend moved when her daughter was entering 1st and it was fine. They are still getting to know all the kids in their grade at that age. Good luckChat Icon

Re: Anyone move and have kids change schools?

I can't speak in the sense of moving my own children, but I can tell you about my experience of my own moving around when I was younger.

I moved from LI to CA in between 5th and 6th grades. My brother was between 1st and 2nd. This was by far the easiest move for me. We were young, it was exciting, kids are still very open to making new friends.

We moved again in between 8th and 9th grade from CA to NJ. My brother was between 4th and 5th grade. For my brother, this again was an easy move. He very easily made friends. For me, this move was very hard. It was freshman year of high school and kids have established their groups of friends. I never told my parents how hard that move was on me because I didn't want them to feel bad. In the end, I was fine. I made friends. It was just much harder to move as I was older.

I think your DS will be fine. At that age, he is going to fit right in. Especially since you signed him up for summer activities, that will also help.

It's funny, I recently connected with a bunch of people through Facebook that I knew in elementary school on LI that I haven't spoken to since I moved in 5th grade. I was touched that they still remembered me!

Good luck with the move and your DS will be fine! He is at an age where it is like an adventure! Chat Icon

Re: Anyone move and have kids change schools?

So far we have moved twice since DS started school. I have to admit I was more of a mess than he was. At that age they adjust quickly and usually without a problem.

First move was when he started 2nd grade. New school new district. He did awesome. Adjusted very well. DS is very friendly and doesn't have issues with making friends. By the end of the first week he was raving about the school and all the friends he had made.

Recently we moved again, final move for a long time, and he will again be starting in a new school, new school district, in September. He will be in 3rd grade this time. I am not as worried this time since he did so well with the first move. A big plus is that he has a friend in this new school already.

What we did was talk about the new school and how exciting it will be. We drove pass the school a few time so he could get familiar with it on the outside and see the playground. We would walk to his bus stop during the summer just to get comfortable with the walk.

Good luck with your move. I am sure your DS will do wonderfully.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thank you so much for the reassurance. I am sure he will be fine and it will be harder on me than him!Chat Icon
